Ethylene-mediated nitric oxide depletion pre-adapts plants to hypoxia stress
Timely perception of adverse environmental changes is critical for survival. Dynamic changes in gases are important cues for plants to sense environmental perturbations, such as submergence. In Arabidopsis thaliana, changes in oxygen and nitric oxide (NO) control the stability of ERFVII transcription factors. ERFVII proteolysis is regulated by the N-degron pathway and mediates adaptation to flooding-induced hypoxia. However, how plants detect and transduce early submergence signals remains elusive. Here we show that plants can rapidly detect submergence through passive ethylene entrapment and use this signal to pre-adapt to impending hypoxia. Ethylene can enhance ERFVII stability prior to hypoxia by increasing the NO-scavenger PHYTOGLOBIN1. This ethylene-mediated NO depletion and consequent ERFVII accumulation pre-adapts plants to survive subsequent hypoxia. Our results reveal the biological link between three gaseous signals for the regulation of flooding survival and identifies key regulatory targets for early stress perception that could be pivotal for developing flood-tolerant crops

The implications of an idealised large-scale circulation for mechanical work done by tropical convection
A thermodynamic analysis is presented of an overturning circulation simulated by two cloud resolving models, coupled by a weak temperature gradient
parametrisation. Taken together, they represent two separated regions over
different sea surface temperatures, and the coupling represents an idealised
large-scale circulation such as the Walker circulation. It is demonstrated that a
thermodynamic budget linking net heat input to the generation of mechanical
energy can be partitioned into contributions from the large-scale interaction
between the two regions, as represented by the weak temperature gradient
approximation, and from convective motions in the active warm region and
the suppressed cool region. Model results imply that such thermodynamic
diagnostics for the aggregate system are barely affected by the strength of
the coupling, even its introduction, or by the SST contrast between the regions. This indicates that the weak temperature gradient parametrisation does
not introduce anomalous thermodynamic behaviour. We find that the vertical
kinetic energy associated with the large-scale circulation is more than three
orders of magnitude smaller than the typical vertical kinetic energy in each
region. However, even with very weak coupling circulations, the contrast between the thermodynamic budget terms for the suppressed and active regions
is strong and is relatively insensitive to the degree of the coupling. Additionally, scaling arguments are developed for the relative values of the terms in
the mechanical energy budget
Concomitant progressive supranuclear palsy and chronic traumatic encephalopathy in a boxer.
We report the case of a 75-year-old ex-professional boxer who developed diplopia and eye movement abnormalities in his 60's followed by memory impairment, low mood and recurrent falls. Examination shortly before death revealed hypomimia, dysarthria, vertical supranuclear gaze palsy and impaired postural reflexes. Pathological examination demonstrated 4-repeat tau neuronal and glial lesions, including tufted astrocytes, consistent with a diagnosis of progressive supranuclear palsy. In addition, neurofibrillary tangles composed of mixed 3-repeat and 4-repeat tau and astrocytic tangles in a distribution highly suggestive of chronic traumatic encephalopathy were observed together with limbic TDP-43 pathology. Possible mechanisms for the co-occurrence of these two tau pathologies are discussed
Inclination and relativistic effects in the outburst evolution of black hole transients
We have systematically studied the effect of the orbital inclination in the
outburst evolution of black hole transients. We have included all the systems
observed by the Rossi X-ray timing explorer in which the thermal, accretion
disc component becomes strongly dominant at some point of the outburst.
Inclination is found to modify the shape of the tracks that these systems
display in the colour/luminosity diagrams traditionally used for their study.
Black hole transients seen at low inclination reach softer spectra and their
accretion discs look cooler than those observed closer to edge-on. This
difference can be naturally explained by considering inclination dependent

Clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of foot orthoses for people with established rheumatoid arthritis: an exploratory clinical trial
Objectives: Foot orthoses are commonly prescribed as an intervention for people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Data relating to the cost-effectiveness of foot orthoses in people with RA are limited. The aim was to evaluate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of two types of foot orthoses in people with established RA.
Method: A single-blind randomized controlled trial was undertaken to compare custom-made foot orthoses (CMFOs) and simple insoles (SIs) in 41 people with established RA. The Foot Function Index (FFI) was used to measure foot pain, disability, and functional limitation. Costs were estimated from the perspective of the UK National Health Service (NHS), societal (patient and family) perspective, and secondary care resource use in terms of the intervention and staff time. Effects were assessed in terms of health gain expressed as quality-adjusted life years (QALYs).
Results: At baseline, 20 participants received a CMFO and 21 participants received an SI. After 16 weeks foot pain improved in both the CMFOs (p = 0.000) and the SIs (p < 0.01). However, disability scores improved for CMFOs (p < 0.001) but not for SIs (p = 0.40). The cost-effectiveness results demonstrated no difference in cost between the arms (CMFOs: ÂŁ159.10; SIs: ÂŁ79.10; p = 0.35), with the CMFOs being less effective in terms of cost per QALY gain (p < 0.001).
Conclusions: In people with established RA, semi-rigid customized foot orthoses can improve pain and disability scores in comparison to simple insoles. From a cost-effectiveness perspective, the customized foot orthoses were far more expensive to manufacture, with no significant cost per QALY gain
"The trauma of competition": the entry of Air Products Inc. into the industrial gases business in Britain and continental Europe 1947-1970
The British Oxygen Company (BOC) had a virtual monopoly on the supply of industrial gases (e.g. oxygen and acetylene) on the British market through the 1950s, when it was finally challenged by an American-based company, Air Products. Air Products Limited (APL) was able to undercut BOCs position, overcoming high barriers to entry to gain significant market share in this sector, which shares some features of network industries. Factors in this success included conditions imposed by the Board of Trade, APL’s innovations, BOC’s slow response, and favourable market conditions. APL’s success had implications for the internationalisation of the industrial gases industry
Experiment to Characterize Aircraft Volatile Aerosol and Trace-Species Emissions (EXCAVATE)
The Experiment to Characterize Aircraft Volatile and Trace Species Emissions (EXCAVATE) was conducted at Langley Research Center (LaRC) in January 2002 and focused upon assaying the production of aerosols and aerosol precursors by a modern commercial aircraft, the Langley B757, during ground-based operation. Remaining uncertainty in the postcombustion fate of jet fuel sulfur contaminants, the need for data to test new theories of particle formation and growth within engine exhaust plumes, and the need for observations to develop air quality models for predicting pollution levels in airport terminal areas were the primary factors motivating the experiment. NASA's Atmospheric Effects of Aviation Project (AEAP) and the Ultra Effect Engine Technology (UEET) Program sponsored the experiment which had the specific objectives of determining ion densities; the fraction of fuel S converted from S(IV) to S(VI); the concentration and speciation of volatile aerosols and black carbon; and gas-phase concentrations of long-chain hydrocarbon and PAH species, all as functions of engine power, fuel composition, and plume age
