    Efectos de plantaciones forestales en el control, recuperación y protección del suelo, en áreas degradadas de la región de Aysén

Chile.Para evaluar los efectos que las plantaciones de coníferas tienen en el control de erosión, recuperación y protección de suelos degradados en la Región de Aysén, se analizó cambios presentados en propiedades físicas y químicas del suelo. El estudio fue realizado en predios pertenecientes a Forestal Mininco S.A. y en la Reserva Nacional Mañihuales. Se muestrearon plantaciones de Pinus ponderosa (Dougl. ex Laws.) de 16 y 22 años y plantaciones de Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco de 16 y 39 años. Igualmente se muestrearon unidades que presentaran suelos desprovistos de vegetación arbórea, para simular uso y estado del suelo en condiciones anteriores al establecimiento de plantaciones. Los rodales seleccionados fueron divididos en dos unidades homogéneas (UH) a través de análisis SIG, considerando condiciones similares de uso, exposición y pendiente. Desde muestras de suelo entre 0-15 cm y 16-30 cm de profundidad, se efectuó análisis físico, que comprendió textura, densidad aparente, estabilidad de agregados y conductividad hidráulica. El análisis químico incluyó pH, NPK disponible, Ca, Mg, CIC y contenido de materia orgánica. A modo de predecir y comparar los montos de pérdida de suelo, se aplicó la Ecuación Universal de Pérdida de Suelo (USLE). Resultados preliminares manifiestan que existen amplias diferencias en el contenido de materia orgánica y nutrientes. Existen diferencias estadísticas entre suelos con plantaciones y suelos desprovistos de vegetación arbórea en la totalidad de los análisis. Es posible concluir anticipadamente que el establecimiento de plantaciones es una herramienta efectiva en el control de erosión y en el mejoramiento de suelos.Forestal Mininco S.A. “Proyecto Aysén”.     Caracteres preimaginales y aspectos bionómicos de Gyriosomus luczotii Laporte, 1840 (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae)

    Se describe la morfología y microestructura coriónica del huevo y la morfología del primer estadio larvario de Gyriosomus luczotii Laporte, 1840 (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae, Nycteliini). También se exponen antecedentes bionómicos y distribucionales de la especie. Para la obtención de huevos y larvas, se recolectaron parejas en el terreno que fueron mantenidas en cajas de cria hasta la ovoposición y posterior eclosión. La estructura y ornamentación del exocorion del huevo y características morfológicas externas de la larva fueron analizadas mediante microscopía electrónica de barrido. Los resultados muestran que los huevos de G. luczotii presentan un micropilo redondeado y exocorion liso, con células hexagonales sin aeropilos. Las larvas de G. luczotii presentan características morfológicas adaptativas para la vida edáfica del tipo Pedobionta: cápsula cefálica con gran cantidad de sensillas, patas protorácicas de función cavadora, y pigopodio bien desarrollado. Se analiza la importancia de algunos caracteres morfológicos de la larva de primer estadio como criterio de diagnóstico específico y se establece que las diferencias interespecíficas referidas a las sensillas frontales, la forma del clípeo y el margen anterior del labro tienen valor taxonómico y probablemente filogenético. Bionomical and distributional data on this species are also provided. To obtain eggs and larvae, couples were collected in the field and kept in rearing cages until oviposture and ecclosion. The structure and adornment of the egg exochorion, and the exterior morphological features of larvae were examined with electron scanning microscopy. The eggs of G. luczotii showed a rounded micropyle and a smooth exochorion, composed of hexagonal cells without aeropyles. The larvae of G. luczotii showed morphological characteristics suited for an edaphic life similar to that of Pedobionta: digging prothoracic legs, cephalic capsule with abundant sensilla, and well–developed pygopodium. We analysed the importance of larval morphology as an element for specific diagnosis and found that interspecific differences regarding frontal sensilla, clypeus shape, and anterior part of labrum, had a taxonomic value and possibly a phylogenetic value.     Pre-biopsy MRI as an adjunct for cancer detection in men with elevated PSA and no previous biopsy

    The role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) prior to biopsy in the diagnosis of prostate cancer in biopsy-naïve patients has been strengthened by recent developments such as the PIRADS V2 criteria, which cover acquisition, interpretation, and reporting for clinical practice and data collection for research. Important questions on the role of prostate MRI remain: can MRI be used as a triage test before first biopsy series? Can it be used to avoid the use of systematic biopsies (SB) and instead use only targeted biopsies (TB) to MRI-suspicious lesions? Studies to evaluate image guided TB compared to SB have started to accumulate. Objectives of these studies should be to reduce the detection of clinically insignificant disease, to maximize the detection of clinically significant cancer (CSC), to better assess disease size, grade and location. Accurate diagnosis will allow the choice of the most appropriate treatments options, minimising side effects and reducing overtreatment. Study results on MRI-TB detection rates are promising however some limitations should be considered. The majority of published and ongoing studies have been performed at expert centres, in order to demonstrate the optimal performance of MRI. Then, the validation of this strategy in less specialised institutions will be necessary before incorporating recommendations in international guidelines. It necessitates training for radiologists and urologists to perform and read MRI and MRI-targeted biopsy through education programs and standardization tools. All these advances will be consolidated with expected genetic screening tools to improve the detection of aggressive cancer

    Photoactivatable organometallic pyridyl ruthenium(II) arene complexes

    The synthesis and characterization of a family of piano-stool RuII arene complexes of the type [(η6-arene)Ru(N,N′)(L)][PF6]2, where arene is p-cymene (p-cym), hexamethylbenzene (hmb), or indane (ind), N,N′ is 2,2′-bipyrimidine (bpm), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione (phendio), or 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (bathophen), and L is pyridine (Py), 4-methylpyridine (4-MePy), 4-methoxypyridine (4-MeOPy), 4,4′-bipyridine (4,4′-bpy), 4-phenylpyridine (4-PhPy), 4-benzylpyridine (4-BzPy), 1,2,4-triazole (trz), 3-acetylpyridine (3-AcPy), nicotinamide (NA), or methyl nicotinate (MN), are reported, including the X-ray crystal structures of [(η6-p-cym)Ru(bpm)(4-MePy)]2+ (2), [(η6-p-cym)Ru(bpm)(4-BzPy)]2+ (6), [(η6-p-cym)Ru(bpm)(trz)]2+ (7), [(η6-p-cym)Ru(phen)(Py)]2+ (10), and [(η6-ind)Ru(bpy)(Py)]2+ (13). These complexes can selectively photodissociate the monodentate ligand (L) when excited with UVA or white light, allowing strict control of the formation of the reactive aqua species [(η6-arene)Ru(N,N′)(OH2)]2+ that otherwise would not form in the dark. The photoproducts were characterized by UV–vis absorption and 1H NMR spectroscopy. DFT and TD-DFT calculations were employed to characterize the excited states and to obtain information on the photochemistry of the complexes. All the RuII pyridine complexes follow a relatively similar photochemical L-ligand dissociation mechanism, likely to occur from a series of 3MC triplet states with dissociative character. The photochemical process proved to be much more efficient when UVA-range irradiation was used. More strikingly, light activation was used to phototrigger binding of these potential anticancer agents with discriminating preference toward 9-ethylguanine (9-EtG) over 9-ethyladenine (9-EtA). Calf thymus (CT)-DNA binding studies showed that the irradiated complexes bind to CT-DNA, whereas the nonirradiated forms bind negligibly. Studies of CT-DNA interactions in cell-free media suggest combined weak monofunctional coordinative and intercalative binding modes. The RuII arene complexes [(η6-p-cym)Ru(bpm)(Py)]2+ (1), [(η6-p-cym)Ru(bpm)(4-MeOPy)]2+ (3), [(η6-p-cym)Ru(4,4′-bpy)]2+ (4), [(η6-hmb)Ru(bpm)(Py)]2+ (8), [(η6-ind)Ru(bpm)(Py)]2+ (9), [(η6-p-cym)Ru(phen)(Py)]2+ (10), [(η6-p-cym)Ru(bathophen)(Py)]2+ (12), [(η6-p-cym)Ru(bpm)(NA)]2+ (15), and [(η6-p-cym)Ru(bpm)(MN)]2+ (16) were cytotoxic toward A2780 human ovarian cancer cell line in the absence of photoirradiation (IC50 values in the range of 9.0–60 μM)

    Bipyrimidine ruthenium(II) arene complexes : structure, reactivity and cytotoxicity

    The synthesis and characterization of complexes [(η6-arene)Ru(N,N′)X][PF6], where arene is para-cymene (p-cym), biphenyl (bip), ethyl benzoate (etb), hexamethylbenzene (hmb), indane (ind) or 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene (thn), N,N′ is 2,2′-bipyrimidine (bpm) and X is Cl, Br or I, are reported, including the X-ray crystal structures of [(η6-p-cym)Ru(bpm)I][PF6], [(η6-bip)Ru(bpm)Cl][PF6], [(η6-bip)Ru(bpm)I][PF6] and [(η6-etb)Ru(bpm)Cl][PF6]. Complexes in which N,N′ is 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione or 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (bathophen) were studied for comparison. The RuII arene complexes undergo ligand-exchange reactions in aqueous solution at 310 K; their half-lives for hydrolysis range from 14 to 715 min. Density functional theory calculations on [(η6-p-cym)Ru(bpm)Cl][PF6], [(η6-p-cym)Ru(bpm)Br][PF6], [(η6-p-cym)Ru(bpm)I][PF6], [(η6-bip)Ru(bpm)Cl][PF6], [(η6-bip)Ru(bpm)Br][PF6] and [(η6-bip)Ru(bpm)I][PF6] suggest that aquation occurs via an associative pathway and that the reaction is thermodynamically favourable when the leaving ligand is I > Br ≈ Cl. pK a* values for the aqua adducts of the complexes range from 6.9 to 7.32. A binding preference for 9-ethylguanine (9-EtG) compared with 9-ethyladenine (9-EtA) was observed for [(η6-p-cym)Ru(bpm)Cl][PF6], [(η6-hmb)Ru(bpm)Cl]+, [(η6-ind)Ru(bpm)Cl]+, [(η6-thn)Ru(bpm)Cl]+, [(η6-p-cym)Ru(phen)Cl]+ and [(η6-p-cym)Ru(bathophen)Cl]+ in aqueous solution at 310 K. The X-ray crystal structure of the guanine complex [(η6-p-cym)Ru(bpm)(9-EtG-N7)][PF6]2 shows multiple hydrogen bonding. Density functional theory calculations show that the 9-EtG adducts of all complexes are thermodynamically preferred compared with those of 9-EtA. However, the bmp complexes are inactive towards A2780 human ovarian cancer cells. Calf thymus DNA interactions for [(η6-p-cym)Ru(bpm)Cl][PF6] and [(η6-p-cym)Ru(phen)Cl][PF6] consist of weak coordinative, intercalative and monofunctional coordination. Binding to biomolecules such as glutathione may play a role in deactivating the bpm complexes

    Nonparametric analysis of casein complex genes' epistasis and their effects on phenotypic expression of milk yield and composition in Murciano-Granadina goats

    Improving knowledge on the causative polymorphisms or genes regulating the expression of milk quantitative and qualitative traits and their interconnections plays a major role in dairy goat breeding programs and genomic research. This information enables optimization of predictive and selective tools, to obtain better-performing animals to help satisfy market demands more efficiently. Goat milk casein proteins (αS1, αS2, β, and κ) are encoded by 4 loci (CSN1S1, CSN1S2, CSN2, and CSN3) clustered within 250 kb on chromosome 6. Among the statistical methods used to identify epistatic interactions in genome-wide qualitative association studies (GWAS), gene-based methods have recently grown in popularity due to their better statistical power and biological interpretability. However, most of these methods make strong assumptions about the magnitude of the relationships between SNP and phenotype, limiting statistical power. Thus, the aims of this study were to quantify the epistatic relationships among 48 SNP in the casein complex on the expression of milk yield and components (fat, protein, dry matter, lactose, and somatic cells) in MurcianoGranadina goats, to explain the qualitative nature of the SNP used to quantify the genotypes produced as a result. Categorical principal component analysis (CATPCA) was used to delimit and group the number of SNP studied depending on their implications in the explanation of milk yield and components variability. Afterward, nonlinear canonical correlation analysis was used to identify relationships among and within the SNP groups detected by CATPCA. Our results suggest that 79.65% of variability in the traits evaluated may be ascribed to the epistatic relationships across and within 7 SNP groups. Two partially overlapping groups of epistatically interrelated SNP were detected: one group of 21 SNP, explaining 57.56% of variability, and another group of 20 SNP, explaining 42.43% (multiple fit ≥ 0.1). Additionally, SNP18, 32, and 36 (CSN1S2, CSN1S1, and CSN2 loci, respectively) were the most significant SNP to explain intragroup epistatic variability (component loading > |0.5|). Conclusively, milk yield and quality may not only depend on the specific casein gene pool of individuals, but may also be relevantly conditioned by the relationships set across and within such genes. Hence, studying epistasis in isolation may be crucial to optimize selective practices for economically important dairy traits

    Phytoplankton Size Structure in Association with Mesoscale Eddies off Central-Southern Chile: The Satellite Application of a Phytoplankton Size-Class Model

    Understanding the influence of mesoscale and submesoscale features on the structure of phytoplankton is a key aspect in the assessment of their influence on marine biogeochemical cycling and cross-shore exchanges of plankton in Eastern Boundary Current Systems (EBCS). In this study, the spatio-temporal evolution of phytoplankton size classes (PSC) in surface waters associated with mesoscale eddies in the EBCS off central-southern Chile was analyzed. Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) size-fractionated filtration (SFF) data from in situ samplings in coastal and coastal transition waters were used to tune a three-component (micro-, nano-, and pico-phytoplankton) model, which was then applied to total Chl-a satellite data (ESA OC-CCI product) in order to retrieve the Chl-a concentration of each PSC. A sea surface, height-based eddy-tracking algorithm was used to identify and track one cyclonic (sC) and three anticyclonic (ssAC1, ssAC2, sAC) mesoscale eddies between January 2014 and October 2015. Satellite estimates of PSC and in situ SFF Chl-a data were highly correlated (0.64 < r < 0.87), although uncertainty values for the microplankton fraction were moderate to high (50 to 100% depending on the metric used). The largest changes in size structure took place during the early life of eddies (~2 months), and no major differences in PSC between eddy center and periphery were found. The contribution of the microplankton fraction was ~50% (~30%) in sC and ssAC1 (ssAC2 and sAC) eddies when they were located close to the coast, while nanoplankton was dominant (~60–70%) and picoplankton almost constant (<20%) throughout the lifetime of eddies. These results suggest that the three-component model, which has been mostly applied in oceanic waters, is also applicable to highly productive coastal upwelling systems. Additionally, the PSC changes within mesoscale eddies obtained by this satellite approach are in agreement with results on phytoplankton size distribution in mesoscale and submesoscale features in this region, and are most likely triggered by variations in nutrient concentrations and/or ratios during the eddies’ lifetimes

    Critical Strain Region Evaluation of Self-Assembled Semiconductor Quantum Dots

    A novel peak finding method to map the strain from high resolution transmission electron micrographs, known as the Peak Pairs method, has been applied to In(Ga) As/AlGaAs quantum dot (QD) samples, which present stacking faults emerging from the QD edges. Moreover, strain distribution has been simulated by the finite element method applying the elastic theory on a 3D QD model. The agreement existing between determined and simulated strain values reveals that these techniques are consistent enough to qualitatively characterize the strain distribution of nanostructured materials. The correct application of both methods allows the localization of critical strain zones in semiconductor QDs, predicting the nucleation of defects, and being a very useful tool for the design of semiconductor device
