    Optical properties of silicon carbide for astrophysical applications I. New laboratory infrared reflectance spectra and optical constants

    Silicon Carbide (SiC) optical constants are fundamental inputs for radiative transfer models of astrophysical dust environments. However, previously published values contain errors and do not adequately represent the bulk physical properties of the cubic (beta) SiC polytype usually found around carbon stars. We provide new, uncompromised optical constants for beta- and alpha-SiC derived from single-crystal reflectance spectra and investigate quantitatively whether there is any difference between alpha- and beta-SiC that can be seen in infrared spectra and optical functions. Previous optical constants for SiC do not reflect the true bulk properties, and they are only valid for a narrow grain size range. The new optical constants presented here will allow narrow constraints to be placed on the grain size and shape distribution that dominate in astrophysical environments. In addition, our calculated absorption coefficients are much higher than laboratory measurements, which has an impact on the use of previous data to constrain abundances of these dust grains.Comment: 12 pages; 10 figures; laboratory optical constants available from CDS.     Eigen-analysis of Inviscid Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) Systems with Complex Boundary Conditions

    A method for extracting the eigenvalues and eigenmodes from complex coupled fluid-structure interaction (FSI) systems is presented. The FSI system under consideration in this case is a one-sided, inviscid flow over a finite-length compliant surface with complex boundary conditions, although the method could be applied to any FSI system. The flow is solved for the inviscid case using a boundary-element method solution of Laplace’s equation, while the finite compliant surface is solved through a finite-difference solution of the one-dimensional beam equation. The crux of the method lies in reducing the coupled fluid and structural equations down to a set of coupled linear differential equations. Standard Krylov subspace projection methods may then be used to determine the eigenvalues of the large system of linear equations. This method is applied to the analysis of hydroelastic FSI systems with complex boundary conditions that would be difficult or otherwise impossible to analyse using standard Galerkin methods. Specifically, the complex cases of inhomogeneous and discontinuous compliant wall properties and arbitrary hinge-joint conditions along the compliant surface are considered

    Eigen-analysis of a Fully Viscous Boundary-Layer flow Interacting with a Finite Compliant Surface

    A method and preliminary results are presented for the determination of eigenvalues and eigenmodes from fully viscous boundary layer flow interacting with a finite length one-sided compliant wall. This is an extension to the analysis of inviscid flow-structure systems which has been established in previous work. A combination of spectral and finite-difference methods are applied to a linear perturbation form of the full Navier-Stokes equations and one-dimensional beam equation. This yields a system of coupled linear equations that accurately define the spatio-temporal development of linear perturbations to a boundary layer flow over a finite-length compliant surface. Standard Krylov subspace projection methods are used to extract the eigenvalues from this complex system of equations. To date, the analysis of the development of Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) instabilities over a finite compliant surface have relied upon DNS-type results across a narrow (or even singular) spectrum of TS waves. The results from this method have the potential to describe conclusively the role that a finite length compliant surface has in the development of two-dimensional TS instabilities and other FSI instabilities across a broad spectrum

    Do people perceive benefits in the use of social prescribing to address loneliness and/or social isolation? A qualitative meta-synthesis of the literature

    Social prescribing is a means by which clinical services can link individuals who have psychological, social and/or practical needs with non-clinical services within their local community. There is a lack of empirical evidence investigating whether social prescribing helps such individuals and which interventions are the most effective and accepted by them to address their loneliness. This meta-synthesis aimed to synthesise findings from qualitative studies exploring experiences of people (of any age) who participated in any social prescribing intervention aimed at loneliness and/or social isolation to ascertain whether they felt it helped address loneliness/isolation and the potential mechanisms by which this might occur. We conducted a systematic search of 5 electronic databases and 4 other databases that would yield grey literature in April 2021 to identify qualitative articles on this topic written in English or French. We assessed the quality of the included studies using recognised tools, and synthesised findings using the approach of thematic analysis. We identified 19 records analysed (e.g. journal articles) from 18 studies meeting inclusion criteria. Our analysis identified three themes: (1) increased sense of wellbeing (with six subthemes), (2) factors that engendered an ongoing desire to connect with others, and (3) perceived drawbacks of social prescribing. These themes illustrate the benefits and difficulties people perceive in social prescribing programmes addressing loneliness and social isolation, with an overall balance of more benefits than drawbacks in social prescribing participation. However, given the unhelpful aspects of social prescribing identified by some participants, greater thought should be given to potential harms. Moreover, further qualitative and quantitative research is needed to better understand mechanisms and effectiveness, and how different components of social prescribing might be best matched to individual participants

    Mean-field methods in evolutionary duplication-innovation-loss models for the genome-level repertoire of protein domains

    We present a combined mean-field and simulation approach to different models describing the dynamics of classes formed by elements that can appear, disappear or copy themselves. These models, related to a paradigm duplication-innovation model known as Chinese Restaurant Process, are devised to reproduce the scaling behavior observed in the genome-wide repertoire of protein domains of all known species. In view of these data, we discuss the qualitative and quantitative differences of the alternative model formulations, focusing in particular on the roles of element loss and of the specificity of empirical domain classes.Comment: 10 Figures, 2 Table

    The relationship between Hippocampal asymmetry and working memory processing in combat-related PTSD: a monozygotic twin study

    BACKGROUND: PTSD is associated with reduction in hippocampal volume and abnormalities in hippocampal function. Hippocampal asymmetry has received less attention, but potentially could indicate lateralised differences in vulnerability to trauma. The P300 event-related potential component reflects the immediate processing of significant environmental stimuli and has generators in several brain regions including the hippocampus. P300 amplitude is generally reduced in people with PTSD. METHODS: Our study examined hippocampal volume asymmetry and the relationship between hippocampal asymmetry and P300 amplitude in male monozygotic twins discordant for Vietnam combat exposure. Lateralised hippocampal volume and P300 data were obtained from 70 male participants, of whom 12 had PTSD. We were able to compare (1) combat veterans with current PTSD; (2) their non-combat-exposed co-twins; (3) combat veterans without current PTSD and (4) their non-combat-exposed co-twins. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between groups in hippocampal asymmetry. There were no group differences in performance of an auditory oddball target detection task or in P300 amplitude. There was a significant positive correlation between P300 amplitude and the magnitude of hippocampal asymmetry in participants with PTSD. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that greater hippocampal asymmetry in PTSD is associated with a need to allocate more attentional resources when processing significant environmental stimuli.Timothy Hall, Cherrie Galletly, C.R.     We study long time dynamical properties of a chain of harmonically bound Brownian particles. This chain is allowed to wander everywhere in the plane. We show that the scaling variables for the occupation times T_j, areas A_j and winding angles \theta_j (j=1,...,n labels the particles) take the same general form as in the usual Brownian motion.
