UID/HIS/04666/2013This work, developed under the Master thesis project of the authoress, had as main objective the study of the ceramic assemblage found at the archaeological site of São Julião da Barra, located between Oeiras and Cascais (Lisbon, Portugal), at the mouth of the Tagus River (Fig. 1). This ceramics assemblage and other remains, among which stands out some pepper grains, has frequently been associated to the cargo brought aboard the Nossa Senhora dos Mártires Portuguese Indiaman, that sailed from Cochin, on January 1606, and sank near to the São Julião da Barra Fortress on 14 September 1606 (Castro, 2001).publishersversionpublishe

The archaeological activity in Lisbon has experienced in the recent decades a large dynamic, both in relation to the large number of interventions, or to its spatial dispersion in the urban space. Simultaneously the archaeological contexts of the early-modern period have raised a growing interest in the Portuguese archaeology. This justifies the publication in recent years, of several references on early-modern archaeological contexts in the city, and consequently, the study of a number of ceramic assemblages of this period. Lisbon, the Portuguese capital of the vast territory involved in the maritime expansion, assumes in this historical period the role of a pottery centre, producing, redistributing and trading ceramics at a global level. Therefore, we believe that it is time to rehearse a first proposal of typological and chronological systematization of Lisbon ceramic productions between the 15th-18th centuries. Technological, morphological and functional aspects will be considered with special attention to terminology.authorsversionpublishe

Pectus Carinatum Evaluation Questionnaire (PCEQ): a novel tool to improve the follow-up in patients treated with brace compression

A questionnaire (Pectus Carinatum Evaluation Questionnaire, PCEQ) was developed to be applied in follow-up of patients with Pectus Carinatum (PC). After validation of the PCEQ, we aimed to quantify the compliance to brace compression and to assess factors that could influence this treatment in patients with PC. From July 2008 to July 2014, 56 patients with PC were treated with the Calgary Protocol of compressive bracing at Paediatric Surgery Department of Hospital So Joo. Forty patients (71%) completed the questionnaire. The PCEQ was divided into four sections: (i) compliance; (ii) symptoms; (iii) social influence; (iv) activities. For the validation process of the PCEQ, principal components analysis (PCA), orthogonal varimax or oblimin rotation and Cronbach's alpha coefficient were used. To evaluate the association between compliance and other sections of the questionnaire, we estimated the Pearson's correlation between compliance factor scores ('Compliance Days' and 'Compliance Hours') and the final score of each new questionnaire component identified by PCA ('Chest Pain', 'Dyspnoea', 'Back Pain', 'Parents' Influence', 'Friends' Influence', 'Activities', 'Time To Compliance'). For the sections 'Symptoms', 'Social Influence' and 'Activities', we estimated final scores as the sum of the questions that constitute each component. For the section 'Compliance', the factor scores were estimated by the regression method. After PCA analysis, the PCEQ found nine different components with high reliability. When analysing the compliance of our study group, the final score for 'Activities' revealed a significant correlation with the factor score for 'Compliance Hours' (r = 0.382, P = 0.015). The final score for 'Time To Compliance' showed a significant correlation with both factor scores for 'Compliance Hours' (r = -0.765, P < 0.001) and 'Compliance Days' (r = -0.345, P < 0.029). The PCEQ seems to be an important tool to follow up patients with PC treated by brace compression. Practical steps, such as developing a tight schedule in the early follow-up period or applying the PCEQ in first visits after initiating brace therapy, can be taken in order to increase compliance with brace therapy and improve the quality of life.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This study aims to examine egg allergy in pediatric patients and analyze the value of serum-specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) levels as predictive biomarkers for oral food challenge (OFC) outcomes. Methods: Retrospective study, involving pediatric patients with suspected IgE-mediated egg allergy, conducted at a tertiary hospital. Results: Data from 176 pediatric patients were analyzed, revealing a higher male prevalence (59.1%). Most cases (40.3%) presented symptoms in the first year of life, predominantly mucocutaneous symptoms (46%). OFC results varied across various forms of egg presentation, with cooked egg being the most frequently tested food. Positive OFCs were observed in 14.6% (n = 36) of cases. The study identified specific egg protein biomarkers for positive OFC, with ovalbumin for raw egg (sIgE > 1.28 KUA/L; area under the curve [AUC] = 0.917; sensitivity [S] 100%; and specificity [Sp] 92%), ovomucoid for cooked egg (sIgE > 0.99 KUA/L; AUC = 0.788, 95%; S: 79%; and Sp: 74%), and ovomucoid for baked egg (sIgE> 4.63 KUA/L; AUC = 0.870; S: 80%; and Sp: 85%) showing predictive capacities. Conclusions: The findings underscore the importance of considering various forms of egg presentation in the diagnosis and management of egg allergy. The findings highlight the valuable discriminatory capacity and provided reliable biomarkers, such as ovalbumin for raw egg and ovomucoid for cooked and baked egg in risk assessment, aiding in predicting OFC outcomes and helping clinicians to make informed decisions in diagnosing and managing egg allergies, thus improving patient care and quality of life.publishersversionpublishe

SFRH/BD/75233/2010 SFRH/BD/76416/2011 UID/HIS/04666/2013In June 2014 CHAM developed an assessment mission of a collection of ship timbers scattered over Belinho beach, during the winter storms that affected the northern Portuguese coast. These timbers are part of a possible shipwreck context, with several archaeological materials, among which stands out a collection of pewter and copper alloy plates and porringers. These materials were recovered by the Esposende City Council that sent the artefacts for conservation and restoration and maintains the timbers in water tanks. This first assessment considered an analysis of the most important timbers, which allowed some preliminary considerations about the type of construction and the ship's chronology. The mission was supported by the Esposende City Council.publishersversionpublishe

Early modern reused ship timbers from Boqueirão do Duro, Lisbon, Portugal

Archaeological excavations conducted at the riverside area of Lisbon (Boqueirão do Duro, Santos) in 2016 revealed archaeological remains from the 18th to the 19th centuries, including the remains of a late 19th-century factory named Vulcano e Colares built on top of an ancient beach and later port. The waterfront archaeological contexts were wide-ranging. There were several timbers from a large ship dismantled on the beach, port structures that reused ship elements, and an assemblage of pre-shaped timbers. Among the dismantled elements were keels, keelsons, stems, floor timbers, futtocks, hull planks, wooden sheathing, and an uncommon find, three complete bilge pumps.
