Imaging and etching: soft x-ray microscopy on whole wet cells

    Get PDF
We have produced images of whole wet tissue culture cells with the Stony Brook/BNL scanning transmission x-ray microscope (STXM). For fixed cells we have taken images at theoretical resolutions of ~50-75 nm, and in practice have measured FWHM of features down to near 100 nm, without any exotic image processing. For un-fixed (i.e., initially live) cells we have imaged with 100 nm pixels and measured features down to 250 nm. In order to do this we have developed, tested, and used a wet cell for maintaining fixed or live cells on the STXM stage during imaging. Our design of the wet cell and the culture substrates that go with it make the STXM compatible with almost all standard systems for surface adherent tissue culture. We show some new images of whole wet fixed and unfixed cells, with visible sub-micron features. We also report data that helps to characterize the tissue damage due to x-ray absorption during STXM imaging

Green function Retrieval and Time-reversal in a Disordered World

We apply the theory of multiple wave scattering to two contemporary, related topics: imaging with diffuse correlations and stability of time-reversal of diffuse waves, using equipartition, coherent backscattering and frequency speckles as fundamental concepts.Comment: 1 figur

    Solar Neutrinos. II. Experimental

A method is described for observing solar neutrinos from the reaction Cl/ sup 37/( nu ,e/sup -/)Ar/sup 37/ in C/sub 2/Cl/sub 4/. Two 5 00-gal tanks of C/ sub 2/Cl/sub 4/ were placed in a limestone mine (1800 m.w.e.) and the resulting Ar/sup 37/ activity induced by cosmic mesons( mu ) was measured to determine the necessary conditions for solar neutrino observations. Measurement of Forward Jets Produced in High-Transverse-Momentum Hadron-Proton Collisions

    Get PDF
A measurement of charged-particle production is reported for the forward region in events triggered by high-transverse-momentum (p⊥) jets and single particles. The momentum distributions of forward-going particles are observed to scale in a simple p⊥-dependent longitudinal variable. Forward-going (beam) jets are observed to be tilted away from the original direction by an amount which agrees with muon-pair data when interpreted in a parton (quantum-chromodynamics) model

Observation of the Production of Jets of Particles at High Transverse Momentum and Comparison with Inclusive Single-Particle Reactions

    Get PDF
Data are presented on production by 200-GeV/c hadrons incident on beryllium of both single particles and jets (groups of particles) with high p_T (transverse momentum). The experiment was performed in a wide-aperture multiparticle spectrometer at Fermilab. The jet and single-particle cross sections have a similar shape from p_T=3 to 5 GeV/c but the jet cross section is over two orders of magnitude larger. The distributions of charged-particle momenta show striking similarities to those observed in lepton-induced processes
