    Study on the induced maturation of the Indian pearl oyster Pinctada fucata (Gould) at Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, India

    In the induced maturation experiments of the pearl oyster Pinctada fucata (Gould), 7.5 ± 3.54%, 6.67% and 15 ± 7.07% fully mature pearl oysters were obtained on day 43, 42 and 36 in oysters fed with mixed algae (T-1), mixed algae and raw corn flour (T-2), mixed algae and raw rice flour (T-3), respectively under laboratory conditions. Among the treatments, it was observed that the (T-3) mixed algae with raw rice flour gave the best results with pearl oysters maturing 62.5 ± 7.08% under laboratory conditions on day 29 itself. Whereas, 35 % ± 7.07 % of fully mature pearl oysters were obtained on the 15th day and 36th day from the farm and laboratory, respectively and none in the non fed. Of the matured animals, 43.33% of stage III animals fed on mixed algae changed to stage IV within 19 days, while gonad of 40 ± 14.14% of pearl oysters without feeding changed to stage IV within 26 days under laboratory conditions. Maturity of 53.12 ± 11.97% pearl oysters did not change when maintained in the farm conditions within 24 days

    'The Brick' is not a brick : A comprehensive study of the structure and dynamics of the Central Molecular Zone cloud G0.253+0.016

'the Brick'); one of the most massive and dense molecular clouds in the Galaxy to lack signatures of widespread star formation. As a potential host to a future generation of high-mass stars, understanding largely quiescent molecular clouds like G0.253+0.016 is of critical importance. In this paper, we reanalyse Atacama Large Millimeter Array cycle 0 HNCO J=4(0,4)3(0,3)J=4(0,4)-3(0,3) data at 3 mm, using two new pieces of software which we make available to the community. First, scousepy, a Python implementation of the spectral line fitting algorithm scouse. Secondly, acorns (Agglomerative Clustering for ORganising Nested Structures), a hierarchical n-dimensional clustering algorithm designed for use with discrete spectroscopic data. Together, these tools provide an unbiased measurement of the line of sight velocity dispersion in this cloud, σvlos,1D=4.4±2.1\sigma_{v_{los}, {\rm 1D}}=4.4\pm2.1 kms1^{-1}, which is somewhat larger than predicted by velocity dispersion-size relations for the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). The dispersion of centroid velocities in the plane of the sky are comparable, yielding σvlos,1D/σvpos,1D1.2±0.3\sigma_{v_{los}, {\rm 1D}}/\sigma_{v_{pos}, {\rm 1D}}\sim1.2\pm0.3. This isotropy may indicate that the line-of-sight extent of the cloud is approximately equivalent to that in the plane of the sky. Combining our kinematic decomposition with radiative transfer modelling we conclude that G0.253+0.016 is not a single, coherent, and centrally-condensed molecular cloud; 'the Brick' is not a \emph{brick}. Instead, G0.253+0.016 is a dynamically complex and hierarchically-structured molecular cloud whose morphology is consistent with the influence of the orbital dynamics and shear in the CMZ.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    Development of a stochastic computational fluid dynamics approach for offshore wind farms

    In this paper, a method for stochastic analysis of an offshore wind farm using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is proposed. An existing offshore wind farm is modelled using a steady-state CFD solver at several deterministic input ranges and an approximation model is trained on the CFD results. The approximation model is then used in a Monte-Carlo analysis to build joint probability distributions for values of interest within the wind farm. The results are compared with real measurements obtained from the existing wind farm to quantify the accuracy of the predictions. It is shown that this method works well for the relatively simple problem considered in this study and has potential to be used in more complex situations where an existing analytical method is either insufficient or unable to make a good prediction

The contribution by E.affinis, Athazard, T.tonggol, K.pelamis and T.albacares (young ones) were 18,5041,6,8521,3,093 t, 3,3921 and 2,2111 respectively. Drift gill net was the major gear employed in the coastal tuna fishery.     Antigen receptor repertoires of one of the smallest known vertebrates

    The rules underlying the structure of antigen receptor repertoires are not yet fully defined, despite their enormous importance for the understanding of adaptive immunity. With current technology, the large antigen receptor repertoires of mice and humans cannot be comprehensively studied. To circumvent the problems associated with incomplete sampling, we have studied the immunogenetic features of one of the smallest known vertebrates, the cyprinid fish Paedocypris sp. “Singkep” (“minifish”). Despite its small size, minifish has the key genetic facilities characterizing the principal vertebrate lymphocyte lineages. As described for mammals, the frequency distributions of immunoglobulin and T cell receptor clonotypes exhibit the features of fractal systems, demonstrating that self-similarity is a fundamental property of antigen receptor repertoires of vertebrates, irrespective of body size. Hence, minifish achieve immunocompetence via a few thousand lymphocytes organized in robust scale-free networks, thereby ensuring immune reactivity even when cells are lost or clone sizes fluctuate during immune responses

    Status of exploitation of coastal tunas in the Indian seas

    Tuna and billfish production from Indian seas during the period 1985-'99 evinced an increasing trend and the landings fluctuated between 24,287 t (1987) and 53,6621 (1992). The average annual production during the said period was 40,2041, contributing to 3.6% of the total pelagic fish landings and 1.8% of the total marine fish landings. On an average, 24% of the total tuna and billfish production during 1991-'99 was contributed by northwest coast, 2% by Andaman and Nicobar islands and 14.9% by Lakshadweep. Among the maritime states, Kerala (36 %), Gujarat (18.1%) Tamilnadu (11.6%), Maharashtra (5.9%), Kamataka (5%), Andhra Pradesh (4.4 %) and Goa (2%) were the prime tuna producing states

    Low Temperature Measurements by Infrared Spectroscopy in CoFe2_2O4_4 Ceramic

    In this paper results of new far-infrared and middle-infrared measurements (wavenumber range of 4000cm-1 - 100cm-1) in the range of the temperature from 300K to 8K of the CoFe2O4 ceramic are presented. The bands positions and their shapes are the same in the wide temperature range. The quality of the sample was investigated by X-ray, EDS and EPMA studies. The CoFe2O4 reveals the cubic structure (Fd-3m) in the temperature range from 85K to 360 K without any traces of distortion. On the current level of knowledge the polycrystalline CoFe2O4 does not exhibit phase transition in the temperature range from 8 K to 300 K.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure

    Estimates on potential yield and maximum sustainable fleet size for marine fisheries in Kerala

    Time series data on marine fish landings and effort in units and hours of operation along Kerala during 1997-2007 were used to arrive at estimates on potential yield (PY) and maximum sustainable fleet size (MSFS). The PY was estimated as a simple high pass filter of the landings after classifying the resources into three categories, viz., demersals, large pelagics and small pelagics. The total PY was estimated as 6.99 lakh tonnes and the annual average landings during 1997-2007 was 5.81 lakh tonnes. The MSFS estimates were made from the data on fishing units and hours of operations of important craft and gear combinations, and compared with the existing fleet size. It was found that the number of trawlers and outboard ringseiners in operation are in excess of the recommended MSFS
