Can Universe Experience Many Cycles with Different Vacua ?

Recently, the notion that the number of vacua is enormous has received increased attentions, which may be regarded as a possible anthropical explanation to incredible small cosmological constant. Further, a dynamical mechanisms to implement this possibility is required. We show in an operable model of cyclic universe that the universe can experience many cycles with different vacua, which is a generic behavior independent of the details of the model. This might provide a distinct dynamical approach to an anthropically favorable vacuum.Comment: RevTex, 10 pages, 4 eps figures, accepted by PRD(R), new title and changes in the text to match publicatio

Presented at the 2002 USCID/EWRI conference, Energy, climate, environment and water - issues and opportunities for irrigation and drainage on July 9-12 in San Luis Obispo, California.Includes bibliographical references.A short history of canal automation is given. PLC-based canal automation is relatively new. Advances in PLC-based canal automation are listed. Also listed are some of the remaining challenges. Recent advances have been made in understanding unsteady flow simulation procedures, the form of the control algorithms used, the tuning procedures for these control algorithms, and the field programming of the algorithms into PLCs. The experiences of the Cal Poly Irrigation Training and Research Center (ITRC) in automating a variety of canals with upstream and downstream control are given

Constraints on Oscillating Quintom from Supernova, Microwave Background and Galaxy Clustering

We consider in this paper a simple oscillating Quintom model of dark energy which has two free parameters and an equation of state oscillating and crossing -1. For low redshifts the equation of state of this model resembles itself similar to the linearly parameterized dark energy, however differ substantially at large redshifts. We fit our model to the observational data separately from the new high redshift supernova observations from the HST/GOODS program and previous supernova, CMB and galaxy clustering. Our results show that because of the oscillating feature of our model the constraints from observations at large redshifts such as CMB become less stringent.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures Revtex

The Bouncing Jet: A Newtonian Liquid Rebounding off a Free Surface

    Get PDF
We find that a liquid jet can bounce off a bath of the same liquid if the bath is moving horizontally with respect to the jet. Previous observations of jets rebounding off a bath (e.g. Kaye effect) have been reported only for non-Newtonian fluids, while we observe bouncing jets in a variety of Newtonian fluids, including mineral oil poured by hand. A thin layer of air separates the bouncing jet from the bath, and the relative motion replenishes the film of air. Jets with one or two bounces are stable for a range of viscosity, jet flow rate and velocity, and bath velocity. The bouncing phenomenon exhibits hysteresis and multiple steady states.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. submitted to Physical Review

    Assisted Tachyonic Inflation

The model of inflation with a single tachyon field generates larger anisotropy and has difficulties in describing the formation of the Universe . In this paper we consider a model with multi tachyon fields and study the assisted inflationary solution. Our results show that this model satisfies the observation.Comment: 5 pages, no figures, a revised version and reference adde

Loop quantum gravity effects on inflation and the CMB

    Get PDF
In loop quantum cosmology, the universe avoids a big bang singularity and undergoes an early and short super-inflation phase. During super-inflation, non-perturbative quantum corrections to the dynamics drive an inflaton field up its potential hill, thus setting the initial conditions for standard inflation. We show that this effect can raise the inflaton high enough to achieve sufficient e-foldings in the standard inflation era. We analyze the cosmological perturbations generated when slow-roll is violated after super-inflation, and show that loop quantum effects can in principle leave an indirect signature on the largest scales in the CMB, with some loss of power and running of the spectral index.Comment: revtex4, 5 pages, 3 figures, significant improvements in explanation of quantization and perturbation issues; version to appear Classical and Quantum Gravit

Gliomas are the largest prevalent and destructive of brain tumors and have crucial parts for the diagnosing and treating of MRI brain tumors during segmentation using computerized methods. Recently, U-Net architecture has achieved impressive brain tumor segmentation, but this role remains challenging due to the differing severity and appearance of gliomas. Therefore, we proposed a novel encoder-decoder architecture called Multi Inception Residual Attention U-Net (MIRAU-Net) in this work. It integrates residual, inception modules with attention gates into U-Net to further enhance brain tumor segmentation performance. Encoderdecoder is connected in this architecture through Inception Residual pathways to decrease the distance between their maps of features. We use the weight crossentropy and generalized Dice (GDL) with focal Tversky loss functions to resolve the class imbalance problem. The evaluation performance of MIRAU-Net checked with Brats 2019 and obtained mean dice similarities of 0.885 for the whole tumor, 0.879 for the core area, and 0.818 for the enhancement tumor. Experiment results reveal that the suggested MIRAU-Net beats its baselines and provides better efficiency than recent techniques for brain tumor segmentation. This work was partially supported by National Funds through FCT/MCTES (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology), within the CISTER Research Unit (UIDP/UIDB/04234/2020).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
