Strong CH^+ J = 1â0 emission and absorption in DR21
We report the first detection of the ground-state rotational transition of the methylidyne cation CH^+ towards the massive star-forming region DR 21 with the HIFI instrument onboard the Herschel satellite. The line profile exhibits a broad emission line, in addition to two deep and broad absorption features associated with the DR 21 molecular ridge and foreground gas. These observations allow us to determine a ^(12)CH^(+)J = 1â0 line frequency of Îœ = 835â137 ± 3 MHz, in good agreement with a recent experimental determination. We estimate the CH^+ column density to be a few 10^(13) cm^(-2) in the gas seen in emission, and >10^(14) cm^(-2) in the components responsible for the absorption, which is indicative of a high line of sight average abundance [CH^+] /[H] > 1.2 Ă 10^(-8). We show that the CH^+ column densities agree well with the predictions of state-of-the-art C-shock models in dense UV-illuminated gas for the emission line, and with those of turbulent dissipation models in diffuse gas for the absorption lines
The outburst radial velocity curve of X-Ray Nova Scorpii 1994 (=GRO J1655--40)
We present a reanalysis of the outburst radial velocity data for X-Ray Nova
Scorpii 1994. Using a model based on X-ray heating of the secondary star we
suggest a more realistic treatment of the radial velocity data. Solutions are
obtained in the (K_2,q) plane which, when combined with the published value for
the binary mass ratio and inclination, constrain the mass of the black hole to
within the region 4.1<M_1<6.6 Msun (90 per cent confidence), which is
significantly lower than the value obtained by Orosz & Bailyn (1997). This
reduced lower bound for the black hole mass together with the high space
velocity of the system is consistent with the idea that it was formed by the
post-supernova collapse of a neutron star.Comment: Accepted for MNRAS, 4 pages Latex, 4 figure
Herschel observations in the ultracompact HII region Mon R2: Water in dense photon-dominated regions (PDRs)
Context. Monoceros R2, at a distance of 830 pc, is the only ultracompact Hii region (UC H_(II)) where the photon-dominated region (PDR) between
the ionized gas and the molecular cloud can be resolved with Herschel. Therefore, it is an excellent laboratory to study the chemistry in extreme
PDRs (G_0 > 10^5 in units of Habing field, n > 10^6 cm^9â3)).
Aims. Our ultimate goal is to probe the physical and chemical conditions in the PDR around the UC H_(II) Mon R2.
Methods. HIFI observations of the abundant compounds ^(13)CO, C^(18)O, o-H_2^(18)O, HCO^+, CS, CH, and NH have been used to derive the physical
and chemical conditions in the PDR, in particular the water abundance. The modeling of the lines has been done with the Meudon PDR code and
the non-local radiative transfer model described by Cernicharo et al.
Results. The ^(13)CO, C^(18)O, o-H^(18)_2O, HCO^+ and CS observations are well described assuming that the emission is coming from a dense (n =
5 Ă 10^6 cm^(â3), N(H_2) > 10^(22) cm^(â2)) layer of molecular gas around the H_(II) region. Based on our o-H^(18)_2O observations, we estimate an o-H_2O
abundance of â2 Ă 10^(â8). This is the average ortho-water abundance in the PDR. Additional H^(18)_2O and/or water lines are required to derive the
water abundance profile. A lower density envelope (n ~ 10^5 cm^(â3), N(H_2) = 2â5 Ă 10^(22) cm^(â2)) is responsible for the absorption in the NH 1_1 â 0_2
line. The emission of the CH ground state triplet is coming from both regions with a complex and self-absorbed profile in the main component.
The radiative transfer modeling shows that the ^(13)CO and HCO^+ line profiles are consistent with an expansion of the molecular gas with a velocity
law, v_e = 0.5 Ă (r/R_(out))^(â1) km s^(â1), although the expansion velocity is poorly constrained by the observations presented here.
Conclusions. We determine an ortho-water abundance of â2 Ă 10^(â8) in Mon R2. Because shocks are unimportant in this region and our estimate is
based on H^(18)_2O observations that avoids opacity problems, this is probably the most accurate estimate of the water abundance in PDRs thus far
On the access to an earth resources data processing system
The Purdue/LARS earth resources data processing system is briefly described. The considerations to which an organization would want to give attention before obtaining a remote terminal to this system are discussed. The support of such a terminal which Purdue/LARS is willing to propose is described
Morphological Phase Diagram for Lipid Membrane Domains with Entropic Tension
Circular domains in phase-separated lipid vesicles with symmetric leaflet composition commonly exhibit three stable morphologies: flat, dimpled, and budded. However, stable dimples (i.e., partially budded domains) present a puzzle since simple elastic theories of domain shape predict that only flat and spherical budded domains are mechanically stable in the absence of spontaneous curvature. We argue that this inconsistency arises from the failure of the constant surface tension ensemble to properly account for the effect of entropic bending fluctuations. Formulating membrane elasticity within an entropic tension ensemble, wherein tension represents the free energy cost of extracting membrane area from thermal bending of the membrane, we calculate a morphological phase diagram that contains regions of mechanical stability for each of the flat, dimpled, and budded domain morphologies
Excitation of the molecular gas in the nuclear region of M82
We present high-resolution HIFI spectroscopy of the nucleus of the archetypical starburst galaxy Mâ82. Six ^(12)COâlines, 2 ^(13)COâlines and 4 fine-structure lines have been detected. Besides showing the effects of the overall velocity structure of the nuclear region, the line profiles also indicate the presence of multiple components with different optical depths, temperatures, and densities in the observing beam. The data have been interpreted using a grid of PDR models. It is found that the majority of the molecular gas is in low density (n = 10^(3.5) cm^(-3)) clouds, with column densities of N_H = 10^(21.5) cm^(-2) and a relatively low UV radiation field (G_0 = 10^2). The remaining gas is predominantly found in clouds with higher densities (n = 10^5 cm^(-3)) and radiation fields (G_0 = 10^(2.75)), but somewhat lower column densities (N_H = 10^(21.2) cm^(-2)). The highest J CO lines are dominated by a small (1% relative surface filling) component, with an even higher density (n = 10^6 cm^(-3)) and UV field (G_0 = 10^(3.25)). These results show the strength of multi-component modelling for interpretating the integrated properties of galaxies
Gas morphology and energetics at the surface of PDRs: New insights with Herschel observations of NGC 7023
Context. We investigate the physics and chemistry of the gas and dust in dense photon-dominated regions (PDRs), along with their dependence on the illuminating UV field.
Aims. Using Herschel/HIFI observations, we study the gas energetics in NGC 7023 in relation to the morphology of this nebula. NGC 7023 is the prototype of a PDR illuminated by a B2V star and is one of the key targets of Herschel.
Methods. Our approach consists in determining the energetics of the region by combining the information carried by the mid-IR spectrum (extinction by classical grains, emission from very small dust particles) with that of the main gas coolant lines. In this letter, we discuss more specifically the intensity and line profile of the 158âÎŒm (1901âGHz) [Câii] line measured by HIFI and provide information on the emitting gas.
Results. We show that both the [Câii] emission and the mid-IR emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) arise from the regions located in the transition zone between atomic and molecular gas. Using the Meudon PDR code and a simple transfer model, we find good agreement between the calculated and observed [Câii] intensities.
Conclusions. HIFI observations of NGC 7023 provide the opportunity to constrain the energetics at the surface of PDRs. Future work will include analysis of the main coolant line [Oâi] and use of a new PDR model that includes PAH-related species
On the wake of a Darrieus turbine
The theory and experimental measurements on the aerodynamic decay of a wake from high performance vertical axis wind turbine are discussed. In the initial experimental study, the wake downstream of a model Darrieus rotor, 28 cm diameter and a height of 45.5 cm, was measured in a Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel. The wind turbine was run at the design tip speed ratio of 5.5. It was found that the wake decayed at a slower rate with distance downstream of the turbine, than a wake from a screen with similar troposkein shape and drag force characteristics as the Darrieus rotor. The initial wind tunnel results indicated that the vertical axis wind turbines should be spaced at least forty diameters apart to avoid mutual power depreciation greater than ten per cent
Statistical Power, the Bispectrum and the Search for Non-Gaussianity in the CMB Anisotropy
We use simulated maps of the cosmic microwave background anisotropy to
quantify the ability of different statistical tests to discriminate between
Gaussian and non-Gaussian models. Despite the central limit theorem on large
angular scales, both the genus and extrema correlation are able to discriminate
between Gaussian models and a semi-analytic texture model selected as a
physically motivated non-Gaussian model. When run on the COBE 4-year CMB maps,
both tests prefer the Gaussian model. Although the bispectrum has comparable
statistical power when computed on the full sky, once a Galactic cut is imposed
on the data the bispectrum loses the ability to discriminate between models.
Off-diagonal elements of the bispectrum are comparable to the diagonal elements
for the non-Gaussian texture model and must be included to obtain maximum
statistical power.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; 20 pages, 6 figures, uses AASTeX
