A Bird’s-Eye View of the Past: Digital History, Distant Reading and Sport History
Advances in computer technologies have made it easier than ever before for historians to access a wealth of sources made available in the digital era. This article investigates one way that historians have engaged with the challenges and opportunities of this ‘infinite archive’: distant reading. We define distant reading as an umbrella term that embraces many practices, including data mining, aggregation, text analysis, and the visual representations of these practices. This paper investigates the utility of distant reading as a research tool via three newspaper case studies concerning Muhammad Ali, women’s surfing in Australia, and homophobic language and Australian sport. The research reveals that the usefulness, effectiveness, and success of distant reading is dependent on numerous factors. While valuable in many instances, distant reading is rarely an end in itself and can be most powerful when paired with the traditional historical skills of close reading
Wikipedia and history: a worthwhile partnership in the digital era?
It is hard to ignore the changes that have occurred to history-making in the digital age. Historians in the academy have observed, critiqued and, in some instances, engaged in the different forms of contemporary history that are related to the integration of the internet and related technologies into everyday lives. While digital history takes many forms, this paper examines Wikipedia as a mode of historical expression in the context of a project on the history of the Australian Paralympic Movement. Wikipedia’s key core content policies of verification, no original research, and neutral point of view (NPOV) as well as the collaborative premise that underpins the online encyclopaedia are the focal points of analysis. This analysis demonstrates that Wikipedia challenges historians who have traditionally produced the professionally approved artefacts of monographs and journal articles. In essence, Wikipedia requires historians to produce knowledge as part of a collaborative community of practice and, in the process, abandon popular theories of truth that underpin empirical-analytical history. Even given these challenges, the history of the Australian Paralympic Movement shows that Wikipedia can be important to history-making in the digital age in at least two ways. Wikipedia provides a mode of historical expression that is complementary to the narratives of traditional books, and the online encyclopaedia generates a community which has produced articles that have enhanced knowledge about the history of disability sport

Resumo: Esse artigo é uma tentativa de solucionar a disputa e o debate histórico sobre o salvamento no mar envolvendo dois especialistas, Ed Jaggard e Douglas Booth. Tendo em vista a base de seus conhecimentos, seus esforços de pesquisa e suas experiências de vida, não é minha intenção criticar seus trabalhos especificamente a partir de uma perspectiva empírica. Signature of small rings in the Raman spectra of normal and compressed amorphous silica: A combined classical and ab initio study
We calculate the parallel (VV) and perpendicular (VH) polarized Raman spectra
of amorphous silica. Model SiO2 glasses, uncompressed and compressed, were
generated by a combination of classical and ab initio molecular-dynamics
simulations and their dynamical matrices were computed within the framework of
the density functional theory. The Raman scattering intensities were determined
using the bond-polarizability model and a good agreement with experimental
spectra was found. We confirm that the modes associated to the fourfold and
threefold rings produce most of the Raman intensity of the D1 and D2 peaks,
respectively, in the VV Raman spectra. Modifications of the Raman spectra upon
compression are found to be in agreement with experimental data. We show that
the modes associated to the fourfold rings still exist upon compression but do
not produce a strong Raman intensity, whereas the ones associated to the
threefold rings do. This result strongly suggests that the area under the D1
and D2 peaks is not directly proportional to the concentration of small rings

The Fatigue Associated with Depression Questionnaire (FAsD): responsiveness and responder definition
PURPOSE: The Fatigue Associated with Depression Questionnaire (FAsD) was developed to assess fatigue and its impact among patients with depression. The purpose of this study was to examine the questionnaire’s responsiveness to change and identify a responder definition for interpretation of treatment-related changes. METHODS: Data were collected at baseline and at 6 weeks from patients with depression starting treatment with a new antidepressant. RESULTS: Of the 96 participants, 55.2% were women, with a mean age of 43.4 years. The total score and both subscales demonstrated statistically significant change with moderate to large effect sizes (absolute values ≥0.76). FAsD change scores were significantly correlated with change on the Brief Fatigue Inventory (r ≥ 0.73; p < 0.001). FAsD mean change scores discriminated among patient subgroups differing by degree of improvement in patient- and clinician-reported fatigue and depression. Responder definition for the two subscales and total score (0.67, 0.57, 0.62) was estimated primarily based on mean change among patients who reported a small but important improvement in fatigue. DISCUSSION: The FAsD was responsive to change, and the responder definition may be used when interpreting treatment-related change. Results add to previous findings suggesting the FAsD is a useful measure of fatigue among patients with depression
Design and operation of a cryogenic charge-integrating preamplifier for the MuSun experiment
The central detector in the MuSun experiment is a pad-plane time projection
ionization chamber that operates without gas amplification in deuterium at 31
K; it is used to measure the rate of the muon capture process . A new charge-sensitive preamplifier, operated at
140 K, has been developed for this detector. It achieved a resolution of 4.5
keV(D) or 120 RMS with zero detector capacitance at 1.1 s
integration time in laboratory tests. In the experimental environment, the
electronic resolution is 10 keV(D) or 250 RMS at a 0.5 s
integration time. The excellent energy resolution of this amplifier has enabled
discrimination between signals from muon-catalyzed fusion and muon capture on
chemical impurities, which will precisely determine systematic corrections due
to these processes. It is also expected to improve the muon tracking and

The Dynamics of Zeroth-Order Ultrasensitivity: A Critical Phenomenon in Cell Biology
It is well known since the pioneering work of Goldbeter and Koshland [Proc.
Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, vol. 78, pp. 6840-6844 (1981)] that cellular
phosphorylation- dephosphorylation cycle (PdPC), catalyzed by kinase and
phosphatase under saturated condition with zeroth order enzyme kinetics,
exhibits ultrasensitivity, sharp transition. We analyse the dynamics aspects of
the zeroth order PdPC kinetics and show a critical slowdown akin to the phase
transition in condensed matter physics. We demonstrate that an extremely
simple, though somewhat mathematically "singular" model is a faithful
representation of the ultrasentivity phenomenon. The simplified mathematical
model will be valuable, as a component, in developing complex cellular

Electrical and network neuronal properties are preferentially disrupted in dorsal, but not ventral, medial entorhinal cortex in a mouse model of Tauopathy
The entorhinal cortex (EC) is one of the first areas to be disrupted in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia. The responsiveness of individual neurons to electrical and environmental stimuli varies along the dorsal-ventral axis of the medial EC (mEC) in a manner that suggests this topographical organization plays a key role in neural encoding of geometric space. We examined the cellular properties of layer II mEC stellate neurons (mEC-SCs) in rTg4510 mice, a rodent model of neurodegeneration. Dorsoventral gradients in certain intrinsic membrane properties, such as membrane capacitance and afterhyperpolarizations, were flattened in rTg4510 mEC-SCs, while other cellular gradients [e.g., input resistance (Ri), action potential properties] remained intact. Specifically, the intrinsic properties of rTg4510 mEC-SCs in dorsal aspects of the mEC were preferentially affected, such that action potential firing patterns in dorsal mEC-SCs were altered, while those in ventral mEC-SCs were unaffected. We also found that neuronal oscillations in the gamma frequency band (30-80 Hz) were preferentially disrupted in the dorsal mEC of rTg4510 slices, while those in ventral regions were comparatively preserved. These alterations corresponded to a flattened dorsoventral gradient in theta-gamma cross-frequency coupling of local field potentials recorded from the mEC of freely moving rTg4510 mice. These differences were not paralleled by changes to the dorsoventral gradient in parvalbumin staining or neurodegeneration. We propose that the selective disruption to dorsal mECs, and the resultant flattening of certain dorsoventral gradients, may contribute to disturbances in spatial information processing observed in this model of dementia. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: The medial entorhinal cortex (mEC) plays a key role in spatial memory and is one of the first areas to express the pathological features of dementia. Neurons of the mEC are anatomically arranged to express functional dorsoventral gradients in a variety of neuronal properties, including grid cell firing field spacing, which is thought to encode geometric scale. We have investigated the effects of tau pathology on functional dorsoventral gradients in the mEC. Using electrophysiological approaches, we have shown that, in a transgenic mouse model of dementia, the functional properties of the dorsal mEC are preferentially disrupted, resulting in a flattening of some dorsoventral gradients. Our data suggest that neural signals arising in the mEC will have a reduced spatial content in dementia
