Voting Trusts and Antitrust: Rethinking the Role of Shareholder Rights and Private Litigation in Public Regulation, 1880s to 1930s
Scholars have long recognized that the states’ authority to charter corporations bolstered their antitrust powers in ways that were not available to the federal government. But they have also argued that the growth of large-scale enterprises operating in national and even international markets forced states to stop prosecuting monopolistic combinations out of fear of doing serious damage to their domestic economies. Our paper has revised this conventional view by focusing attention on the lawsuits that minority shareholders brought against their own companies in state courts of law and equity, especially suits that challenged the anticompetitive use of voting trusts. Historically judges had been reluctant to intervene in corporations’ internal affairs and had displayed a particular wariness of shareholders’ private actions. By the end of the nineteenth century, however, they had begun to revise their views and to see shareholders’ private actions as useful checks on economic concentration. Although the balance between judges’ suspicion of and support for shareholders’ activism shifted back and forth over time, the long-run effect was to make devices like voting trusts unsuitable for the purposes of economic concentration
Trendovi, ograniÄŤenja i konkurentnost izvoznika krumpira u Nigeriji
This article analyzed the trends, constraints and competitiveness of potato exports in Nigeria from 1961- 2016. This article employed trend analysis, Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) and Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA). The results revealed that the trend in export is positive. The constraints to the exports of potato are mainly administrative and institutional, which include the documentation process; time required to export and costs of exports. Nigerian potato exports were more competitive from 2010 – 2016. There should be a more judicious effort in implementing the executive orders for the ease of doing business in Nigeria.
Palm Kernel Shell as Partial Replacement for Normal Weight Aggregate in Concrete
Palm Kernel Shells (PKS) are fractions of shells that result from the cracking of the nut to remove the seed for the production of palm kernel oil. They are of irregular shapes and vary in sizes from fine aggregate to coarse aggregate. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of PKS on Normal Weight Concrete (NWC) as partial replacement of normal weight aggregate (NWA). Effects of PKS on NWC considered were in terms of workability, density, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and the water absorption of the concrete. Batching was by volume since PKS was characterized as a light weight material, and substitutions were made at 0%, 25%, and 50%. The mix ratio adopted was 1:2:3 for cement, fine aggregate, and coarse aggregate with a constant free water to cement ratio (w/c) of 0.58. Curing method was by immersion and effect on the mechanical properties (compressive and tensile strengths) were determined at 7 and 28 days of curing. It was observed that the compressive, tensile strength, workability, and concrete density reduce as PKS content is increased in the mix. On the other hand, water absorption increases with increased in PKS content. However, results were in acceptable range for normal concrete. Keywords: Palm kernel shells, normal weight concrete, normal weight aggregat
AMPD1 polymorphism and response to regadenoson
AIMS: AMPD1 c.34C > T (rs17602729) polymorphism results in AMPD1 deficiency. We examined the association of AMPD1 deficiency and variability of hemodynamic response to regadenoson.
SUBJECTS & METHODS: Genotyping for c.34C>T was performed in 267 patients undergoing regadenoson cardiac stress testing.
RESULTS: Carriers of c.34C >T variant exhibited higher relative changes in systolic blood pressure (SBP) compared with wild-type subjects ([%] SBP change to peak: 12 ± 25 vs 5 ± 13%; p = 0.01) ([%] SBP change to nadir: -3 ± 15 vs -7 ± 11%; p = 0.04). Change in heart rate was similar between groups, but side effects were more common in carriers of the variant (+LR = 4.2; p = 0.04).
CONCLUSION: AMPD1 deficiency may be involved in the modulation of regadenoson's systemic effects
A programmable two-qubit quantum processor in silicon
With qubit measurement and control fidelities above the threshold of
fault-tolerance, much attention is moving towards the daunting task of scaling
up the number of physical qubits to the large numbers needed for fault tolerant
quantum computing. Here, quantum dot based spin qubits may offer significant
advantages due to their potential for high densities, all-electrical operation,
and integration onto an industrial platform. In this system, the
initialisation, readout, single- and two-qubit gates have been demonstrated in
various qubit representations. However, as seen with other small scale quantum
computer demonstrations, combining these elements leads to new challenges
involving qubit crosstalk, state leakage, calibration, and control hardware
which provide invaluable insight towards scaling up. Here we address these
challenges and demonstrate a programmable two-qubit quantum processor in
silicon by performing both the Deutsch-Josza and the Grover search algorithms.
In addition, we characterise the entanglement in our processor through quantum
state tomography of Bell states measuring state fidelities between 85-89% and
concurrences between 73-80%. These results pave the way for larger scale
quantum computers using spins confined to quantum dots
