    Competitive reaction modelling in aqueous systems. The case of contemporary reduction of dichromates and nitrates by nZVI

    In various Countries, Cr(VI) still represents one of the groundwater pollutant of major concern, mainly due to its high toxicity, furthermore enhanced by the synergic effect in presence of other contaminants. As widely reported in the recent literature, nanoscale zero valent iron particles (nZVI-p) have been proved to be particularly effective in the removal of a wide range of contaminants from polluted waters. In this work, experimental tests of hexavalent chromium reduction in polluted groundwater in the presence of nitrate by nZVI-p are presented and discussed. The effect of different nitrate amounts on Cr(VI) reduction mechanism was investigated and the obtained results were successfully interpreted by the proposed kinetic model. nZVI-p produced by the classical borohydride reduction method were added in to synthetic solutions with the initial concentration of Cr(VI) set at 93, 62 and 31 mg L-1 and different nitrate contents in the range 10-100 mg L-1. According to the experimental results, nitrate showed an adverse effect on Cr(VI) reduction, depending on the nZVI/Cr(VI) and Cr(VI)/NO3 - ratio. The proposed kinetic model soundly grasps the competitive nature of the Cr(VI) reduction process when other chemical species are present in the treated solution

    Soul\u27s Eye, a book of poetry by Petrucci, was published by Braden Press on 1975 January 1, and is currently out-of-print. The illustrations in Soul’s Eye were completed by Glenn Pacitto. Kenneth R. Petrucci, a psychotherapist and native of Providence, Rhode Island, earned an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts from the Community College of Rhode Island. In addition, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a major in Oral Interpretation from the Speech and Drama Department at Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis), and a Master of Social Work from the University of Houston. Petrucci hosted “The Creative Connection”, a self-development talk show for four years on KPFT 90.1 FM in Houston, Texas. His guests included leaders in human potential and self-improvement, along with stars such as Ray Charles, Carol Channing, Mickey Rooney, Joan Rivers, and author Richard Bach. Petrucci\u27s interview with Ray Charles is registered in the United States Copyright Office in the Library of Congress. Petrucci designed and taught classes at the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy involving psychological principles to new recruits. He was a psychotherapist for over ten years in the Providence School System in Rhode Island. He was a salesman in educational sales, and is the founder of the Kenneth Petrucci Seminars, which were presented for twenty years at corporations, organizations, and colleges such as Brown University, the University of Houston, and the Rhode Island Dental Association.     Photolysis of in-situ electrogenerated hydrogen peroxide for the degradation of emerging pollutants

    This study investigates the degradation of paracetamol, an emerging contaminant widely used as pain and fever reliever, by means of hydrogen peroxide either alone or in combination with UV-C photolysis. In particular, we provide a comparison between the performance of both commercial and electrogenerated H2O2 whose production has been achieved by galvanostatic electrolysis in undivided reactor with a gas diffusion cathode. The performance of the treatments has been assessed in terms of both pollutant decay and mineralization. The influence of the H2O2 to paracetamol molar ratio is discussed. The results show that the electrogenerated hydrogen peroxide, when activated by UV-C irradiation, results in faster degradation and mineralization of paracetamol. However, under the conditions adopted, complete depletion of the total organic carbon (TOC) has never been attained

    Theory and Application of Dissociative Electron Capture in Molecular Identification

    The coupling of an electron monochromator (EM) to a mass spectrometer (MS) has created a new analytical technique, EM-MS, for the investigation of electrophilic compounds. This method provides a powerful tool for molecular identification of compounds contained in complex matrices, such as environmental samples. EM-MS expands the application and selectivity of traditional MS through the inclusion of a new dimension in the space of molecular characteristics--the electron resonance energy spectrum. However, before this tool can realize its full potential, it will be necessary to create a library of resonance energy scans from standards of the molecules for which EM-MS offers a practical means of detection. Here, an approach supplementing direct measurement with chemical inference and quantum scattering theory is presented to demonstrate the feasibility of directly calculating resonance energy spectra. This approach makes use of the symmetry of the transition-matrix element of the captured electron to discriminate between the spectra of isomers. As a way of validating this approach, the resonance values for twenty-five nitrated aromatic compounds were measured along with their relative abundance. Subsequently, the spectra for the isomers of nitrotoluene were shown to be consistent with the symmetry-based model. The initial success of this treatment suggests that it might be possible to predict negative ion resonances and thus create a library of EM-MS standards.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure

    In this paper we discuss the use of real-time Grid computing for the monitoring, control and simulation of renewable electricity generators and their associated electrical networks. We discuss briefly the architectural design of GRIDCC and how we have integrated a number of real (solar, CHP) and simulated conventional power generators into the GRIDCC environment. A local weather station has also been attached to an Instrument Manager to alert experts appropriately when the Solar Array is not generating. The customised remote control and monitoring environment (a virtual control room), distributed using a standard web server, is discussed

    In 2011 Buffalo Public Schools repealed a requirement that its teachers live in the district — a “residency rule”. Because the city’s urban population accounts for only one quarter of the metro population, this rule severely restricted the teacher applicant pools. However, the residency requirement had some benefits to the community — such as providing neighborhood role models and making teachers more aware of the students’ life situations and challenges. Teachers who understand where students are coming from are likely to relate to them more easily – especially when the teachers are identifiable members of the community and share the students’ cultural and racial backgrounds

    Improved photocatalytic properties of doped titanium-based nanometric oxides

    Photocatalysis is considered one of the most promising technologies for applications in the environmental field especially in the abatement of water-soluble organic pollutants. In this field, titanium dioxide nanoparticles have drawn much attention recently; however, the use of this oxide presents some limitation since it allows to obtain high photoresponse and degradation efficiency only under UV light irradiation, that represents the 3 to 4% of the solar radiation, so preventing its environmental large-scale applications under diffuse daylight. In this work the photocatalytic efficiencyoftitanium-based oxides systems containing alkaline earth metals such as barium and strontium, prepared by a simple sol-gel method was investigated, evaluating the degradation of methylene blue as model compound under UV and visible light irradiation. The results were compared with those obtained with Degussa P25 titanium dioxide. The achieved degradation percentage of methylene blue are very promising showing that under visible light irradiation it is possible to obtain a maximum dye removal percentage ~ 50 % higher than that obtained with the Degussa P25

    Manganese-containing mixed oxide electrodes as anode materials for degradation of model organic pollutants

    Mixed oxide thin film electrodes have been prepared by thermal decomposition from alcoholic solution on Pt substrate. In particular, three different anodes have been obtained by co-deposition of Ru (Ruthenium) and Mn (Manganese) oxides, Ru, Mn and Cu (Copper) oxides and co-deposition of Ru, Mn and Co (Cobalt) oxides. The electrochemical behaviour of the prepared electrodes was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization curves and cyclic voltammetry tests. We also tested and compared their oxidizing ability in the degradation of aqueous solutions containing methyl orange as model compound and small amount of chloride. Galvanostatic experiments were conducted in a membrane-free reactor. The treatment extent was assessed by detection of color and TOC decay. The electrogeneration of active chlorine, chlorate and perchlorate was also monitored. The preliminary results show that ternary oxides coated electrodes exhibit enhanced electrocatalytic activity without producing undesired chlorinated by-products
