Communications in emergency and crisis situations
In emergency and crisis situations (ECS) like earthquakes, tsunamis, terrorist attacks, it is very important that communication facilities are operative to provide services both to rescue teams and civilians. In ECS it is very common that communication premises are often unable to provide services, either due to physical damages or traffic overload. In such a case there is the need for rapid reestablishment of communication services. In this paper the communication services that can be exploited for ECS mitigation are discussed. The usage scenarios of such services are studied. Following that and looking from a network perspective view an ECS communication network architecture is presented. This architecture aims to provide seamless interoperability of varies communication technologies often present in ECS to provide an ECS communication solution. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland

A pattern-based approach for designing reliable cyber-physical systems
Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) appear to be of paramount importance due to their increasing use on critical infrastructure. New challenges have occurred because of the nature and the complexity of such systems in supporting heterogeneous physical and cyber components simultaneously. Failures or attacks on system components decrease system reliability creating severe consequences to CPS and the attached applications. The construction of complex CPS with respect to security and dependability (SandD) properties is necessary to avoid system vulnerabilities at design level. Design patterns are solutions for reusable designs and interactions of objects. In this work we present a pattern-based language for designing CPS able to guarantee SandD properties. The first set of SandD patterns includes the Reliability Component Composition (RCC) Patterns for designing reliable CPS. RCC patterns are encoded in Drools, which is a rule-based reasoning system. To evaluate our approach, we use RCC patterns as a methodology for designing a reliable wireless sensor network attached to a physical architecture to send monitored data to a central controller through relay nodes and paths
Blockchain-based Electronic Patient Records for Regulated Circular Healthcare Jurisdictions
Circular, data-driven healthcare is
increasingly being considered as an effective model to
provide efficient, cost-effective and sustainable
healthcare services in the future. Central to this model
is the service-dominant “building-block”-type provision
of care services to patients, paired with the
collaboration of healthcare providers through a
common infrastructure. This combination enables the
forming of a decentralized, holistic care cycle. Sharing
of patient medical information is pivotal towards
reaching this goal; however, preserving medical record
integrity and privacy, while at the same time allowing
provider interoperability are often conflicting
requirements. Blockchains and Smart Contracts can
provide the underlying technology to support the
decentralized care cycle by addressing patient privacy
and medical record integrity, while simultaneously
offering efficient interoperability between providers. To
demonstrate how this could be achieved, a conceptual
medical record access and sharing mechanism is
presented which is suitable for a system operating
within a regulated healthcare jurisdiction
A Rapid Emergency Deployment mobile communication node
In an Emergency and/or Crisis Situations (ECS) like earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, fires, terrorist attacks etc. the adequate operation of communication services is of extreme importance. History has shown that poor communication in such cases resulted in several casualties. In ECS fixed communication infrastructure might be unserviceable due to sustained damages. Evermore, the communication demand is highly increased in such cases resulting in poor quality of service as both civilians and authorities are trying to establish communications. In this paper, a Rapid Emergency Deployment mobile Communication (REDComm) node is presented. REDComm nodes include wireless communication technologies, to provide various telecommunication services in ECS and interoperability between them. It incorporates an 802.11a mesh cognitive radio technology that operates in the television broadcasting frequency bands to provide a backbone networking with increased range and flexibility. REDComm is constructed upon a trailer chassis able to minimize setup time, which is valuable in ECS. The presented platform is powered by a hybrid power source that combines thermal, solar and wind energy and eliminates the need for external power supply
VirtuWind: Virtual and Programmable Industrial Network Prototype Deployed in Operational Wind Park
With anticipated exponential growth of connected
devices, future industrial networks require an open solutions architecture facilitated by standards and a strong ecosystem.VirtuWind aims to develop and demonstrate an SDN and NFV ecosystem, based on an open, modular and secure framework.A prototype of the framework for intra-domain and inter-domain scenarios will be showcased in real wind parks,as a representative use case of industrial networks. Validate the economic viability of the demonstrated solution is paramount for VirtuWind.
