Compared to neighbouring countries, Croatia is a country with many national parks in relation to its size. In Croatia today there are 8 national parks, and they are: Plitvice, Paklenica, Risnjak, Mljet, Kornati, Brijuni, Krka and Sjeverni (Northern) Velebit. Great natural diversity of our country is very big reason for the diversity of our national parks. Three of parks are ā€˜mountain parksā€™ (Risnjak, Paklenica, Sjeverni Velebit) and also are at least visited parks for tourists because tourists are not always mountaineers. Honestly, my favourite national parks are those because only in them you can enjoy the beauty of nature and silence all year. Three island national parks (Kornati, Mljet, Brijuni) are more visited the mountain. If you rent (or purchase) a boat you can easily tour the parks. Their visitors are foreign tourists, especially those with more money. The most visited Croatian national park are Plitvice lakes. Behind them, by the number of guests, followed the National Park Krka. These two parks are a clear example of the rich karst hydrography/ hydrography of debris (?) with numerous waterfalls and travertine dams. 2,140,759 tourists visited Croatian national parks last year, of which 1,781,999 foreign. Almost half of them visited Plitvice Lakes, while 696,000 visited Krka National Park. Three quarters of registered visitors to Croatian national parks visits these two parks. An interesting fact is that even 80 percent of visitor returns to the national park, which is sufficient proof that a trip was good

Fish Monitoring in Kornati National Park: Baited, Remote, Underwater Video (BRUV) Versus Trammel Net Sampling

We evaluated (1) the suitability of two alternative methods for fish monitoring: trammel net sampling and BRUV (Baited Remote Underwater Video), and (2) the potential to cross-calibrate the methods based on a set of shared species with high catch probabilities. A statistical power analysis concluded that BRUV can be conducted with sufficient sample size to perceive small changes in fish populations with high power, and therefore can be used as a sentinel monitoring method. We found that fish species detected by both methods amounted to almost a third of the number of species in each methodā€™s catch, and that 90% of these species are candidates for cross-calibration. 74% of the species at BRUV and 50% at trammel had occurrence probabilities above 10%, a reasonable threshold allowing stock assessment of these species. The sampled and predicted total species richness, extrapolated from the species accumulation curves, were almost identical across methods. We conclude that cross-calibrating the two methods and eventual replacement of the trammel method with non-destructive BRUV is feasible. The most effective areas of improvement are increased BRUV night-sampling effort and increased total sampling size to increase the statistical power of BRUV as a monitoring tool. Recent state and seasonal fluctuations of striped red mullet have been investigated monthly (January ā€“ December 2009) using trammel bottom net (''maha'' mesh size 28 mm) at four areas out of which tree were inside Kornati National Park (strictly protected zone ā€“ Klobučar Island; partially protected zones ā€“ Mana and Kurba Vela Islands) and one zone was outside of Kornati National Park (Žut Island). Biological and ecological characteristics of the target species were analyzed and age of individuals were determined. During the year 2009 collected 947 individuals whose abundance in areas with different protection regime does not indicate a higher value ''strictly protected areas'', or greater value within the park compared area outside the park
