The temperature structure in the core of Sersic 159-03

We present results from a new 120 ks XMM-Newton observation of the cluster of galaxies Sersic 159-03. In this paper we focus on the high-resolution X-ray spectra obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS). The spectra allow us to constrain the temperature structure in the core of the cluster and determine the emission measure distribution as a function of temperature. We also fit the line widths of mainly oxygen and iron lines.Comment: 7 pages and 4 figures. ECONOMIC COSTS OF THE U.S. WHEAT EXPORT ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM: MANNA FROM HEAVEN OR FROM TAXPAYERS?

Traditional models of export bonus programs focus only on the effects of disposing public stocks on the world market. We show that the economic effects of export bonus programs are significantly different when one includes the costs of acquiring these stocks. Including stock acquisition costs has the domestic price always rising, rather than an ambiguous effect of the traditional model of an export bonus program. We also show that including stock acquisition costs results in an export bonus scheme to be equivalent to cash export subsidies. When an export bonus program is combined with an existing target price scheme, government cost may either rise or fall in either model, but for different reasons. In an empirical simulation of the U.S. Export Enhancement Program for wheat, we show that the model that includes acquisition costs induces a lower level of tax cost than the traditional model even though taxpayers bear the additional burden of acquisition expenditures.agricultural trade, Export Enhancement Program, export subsidies, in-kind, International Relations/Trade, Q17,

On the calculation of normals in free-surface flow problems

    Get PDF
The use of boundary-conforming finite element methods is considered for the solution of surface-tension-dominated free-surface flow problems in three dimensions. This class of method is based upon the use of a moving mesh whose velocity is driven by the motion of the free surface, which is in turn determined via a kinematic boundary condition for the normal velocity. The significance of the method used to compute the normal direction at the finite element node points for a C0 piecewise-polynomial free surface is investigated. In particular, it is demonstrated that the concept of mass-consistent normals on an isoparametric quadratic tetrahedral mesh is flawed. In this case an alternative, purely geometric, normal is shown to lead to a far more robust numerical algorithm

Flexible regression models over river networks

    Get PDF
Many statistical models are available for spatial data but the vast majority of these assume that spatial separation can be measured by Euclidean distance. Data which are collected over river networks constitute a notable and commonly occurring exception, where distance must be measured along complex paths and, in addition, account must be taken of the relative flows of water into and out of confluences. Suitable models for this type of data have been constructed based on covariance functions. The aim of the paper is to place the focus on underlying spatial trends by adopting a regression formulation and using methods which allow smooth but flexible patterns. Specifically, kernel methods and penalized splines are investigated, with the latter proving more suitable from both computational and modelling perspectives. In addition to their use in a purely spatial setting, penalized splines also offer a convenient route to the construction of spatiotemporal models, where data are available over time as well as over space. Models which include main effects and spatiotemporal interactions, as well as seasonal terms and interactions, are constructed for data on nitrate pollution in the River Tweed. The results give valuable insight into the changes in water quality in both space and time
