    Dying in the arts: creativity as metaphor

    The idea that organizations need to adopt structures and practices that facilitate \u27creativity\u27 has become a central theme in theories of managing organisational innovation and success. This idea has been deployed in organisational theory, HRM, marketing and other domains of organization studies. We argue, however, that in the process of being appropriated from the arts, the concept of creativity has been \u27hollowed out\u27 and refashioned to suit the structures of organization as institution, and its needs as a business organization (to make money and establish \u27competitive advantage\u27). This devalued idea of creativity has, in turn, been imposed on arts organisatons, which are impelled to see themselves as \u27creative businesses\u27. Creativity, has been defined as a set of imaginative practices intended to express original ideas, and is in need of defence.<br /

    The Evolution of Labour Law in India: An Overview and Commentary on Regulatory Objectives and Development

    Generally speaking there has been a relative dearth of serious scholarship focusing on the evolution of Indian labour law in its economic, social, and political contexts. Such work as there is tends to be constituted of fragmented and short journal articles and notes, including those by labour economists and industrial relations scholars. The present work undertakes a survey of the literature in the field, examining first the various periods through which Indian labour law has evolved up to the present time, and second the extent to which the labour law system can be seen to have fulfilled its two core objectives: the protection of labour and the maintenance of industrial peace. The survey reveals that Indian “labour law” in the formal sense has very little purchase in terms of its application in pursuit of its objects. This, in turn, suggests that some other approach is required to reach a more grounded and accurate understanding of how, and to what effect, labour is regulated in India

    Overview of healthcare in the UK

    The National Health System in the UK has evolved to become one of the largest healthcare systems in the world. At the time of writing of this review (August 2010) the UK government in its 2010 White Paper “Equity and excellence: Liberating the NHS” has announced a strategy on how it will “create a more responsive, patient-centred NHS which achieves outcomes that are among the best in the world”. This review article presents an overview of the UK healthcare system as it currently stands, with emphasis on Predictive, Preventive and Personalised Medicine elements. It aims to serve as the basis for future EPMA articles to expand on and present the changes that will be implemented within the NHS in the forthcoming months

    Cyclic peptide marine metabolites and CuII

    Cyclic pseudo-peptides derived from marine metabolites of the genus Lissoclinum bistratum and Lissoclinum patella have attracted scientific interest in the last two decades. Their structural properties and solution dynamics have been analyzed in detail, elaborate synthetic procedures for the natural products and synthetic derivatives developed, the biosynthetic pathways studied and it now is possible to produce them biosynthetically. Initially, these macrocyclic ligands were studied due to their medicinal and pharmaceutical potential-some of the isolated cyclic pseudo-peptides show high cytotoxic and antiviral activity. A major focus in the last decade has been on their Cu coordination chemistry, as a number of studies have indicated that dinuclear Cu complexes of cyclic peptides may be involved in the ascidians' metabolism, and this is the focus of the present review

    Automatic detection of pitching and throwing events in baseball with inertial measurement sensors

    Purpose: Throwing loads are known to be closely related to injury risk. However, for logistic reasons, typically only pitchers have their throws counted, and then only during innings. Accordingly, all other throws made are not counted, so estimates of throws made by players may be inaccurately recorded and underreported. A potential solution to this is the use of wearable microtechnology to automatically detect, quantify, and report pitch counts in baseball. This study investigated the accuracy of detection of baseball pitching and throwing in both practice and competition using a commercially available wearable microtechnology unit. Methods: Seventeen elite youth baseball players (mean ± SD age 16.5 ± 0.8 y, height 184.1 ± 5.5 cm, mass 78.3 ± 7.7 kg) participated in this study. Participants performed pitching, fielding, and throwing during practice and competition while wearing a microtechnology unit. Sensitivity and specificity of a pitching and throwing algorithm were determined by comparing automatic measures (ie, microtechnology unit) with direct measures (ie, manually recorded pitching counts). Results: The pitching and throwing algorithm was sensitive during both practice (100%) and competition (100%). Specificity was poorer during both practice (79.8%) and competition (74.4%). Conclusions: These findings demonstrate that the microtechnology unit is sensitive to detect pitching and throwing events, but further development of the pitching algorithm is required to accurately and consistently quantify throwing loads using microtechnology. © 2017 Human Kinetics, Inc

    Non-wage benefits, corporate ownership and firm performance in post-communist economies: evidence from Ukraine

    International audienceThe economic reforms in the transition economies of Central and Eastern Europe have fundamentally reshaped ownership and governance of economic production, notably through the privatization of former state-owned enterprises. These reforms were expected to transform management practices by displacing ‘cradle-to-grave’ welfare arrangements administered by state-owned enterprises. Using data drawn from two large samples of Ukrainian establishments, we investigate, in two different time points, the relationship between non-wage benefits and firm performance during the period of transition to a market economy (1994–2004). We found that non-wage benefits continued to be a critical feature of HRM practices in Ukraine during this period, and were positively associated with firm performance

    Recessionary changes at work and employee well-being: the protective roles of national- and workplace institutions

    The recession following the 2008 financial crisis brought major changes to employees’ experiences at work. We investigate the adverse effects of two of such changes: perceived organizational distress and job deterioration. We also examine the extent to which institutions at national level (employment protection legislation and collective bargaining coverage) and at workplace level (employment contract and union membership) may act as buffers against these effects. Using data from 21 European countries, we show that recessionary changes were associated with reduced psychological well-being and greater levels of work–nonwork interference
