Yersinia pathogènes prolifèrent dans le tissu lymphatique en interférant avec la défense immunitaire précoce de l'hôte. Cette propriété dépend de signaux échangés entre les bactéries et les cellules hôtes. A la suite d'un contact intime avec la cellule cible, la bactérie engendre un signal, qui entraîne une expression accrue de protéines de virulence associées, qui sont par la suite délivrées dans la cellule infectée. Ces protéines, appelées Yops, interfèrent avec les voies de signalisation de la cellule hôte qui sont normalement activées afin d'éliminer les agents infectieux
