Multimodal and ubiquitous computing systems: supporting independent-living older users
We document the rationale and design of a multimodal interface to a pervasive/ubiquitous computing system that supports independent living by older people in their own homes. The Millennium Home system involves fitting a resident’s home with sensors – these sensors can be used to trigger sequences of interaction with the resident to warn them about dangerous events, or to check if they need external help. We draw lessons from the design process and conclude the paper with implications for the design of multimodal interfaces to ubiquitous systems developed for the elderly and in healthcare, as well as for more general ubiquitous computing applications
Koszul-Tate Cohomology For an Sp(2)-Covariant Quantization of Gauge Theories with Linearly Dependent Generators
The anti-BRST transformation, in its Sp(2)-symmetric version, for the general
case of any stage-reducible gauge theories is implemented in the usual BV
approach. This task is accomplished not by duplicating the gauge symmetries but
rather by duplicating all fields and antifields of the theory and by imposing
the acyclicity of the Koszul-Tate differential. In this way the Sp(2)-covariant
quantization can be realised in the standard BV approach and its equivalence

The NIF LinkOut Broker: A Web Resource to Facilitate Federated Data Integration using NCBI Identifiers
This paper describes the NIF LinkOut Broker (NLB) that has been built as part of the Neuroscience Information Framework (NIF) project. The NLB is designed to coordinate the assembly of links to neuroscience information items (e.g., experimental data, knowledge bases, and software tools) that are (1) accessible via the Web, and (2) related to entries in the National Center for Biotechnology Information’s (NCBI’s) Entrez system. The NLB collects these links from each resource and passes them to the NCBI which incorporates them into its Entrez LinkOut service. In this way, an Entrez user looking at a specific Entrez entry can LinkOut directly to related neuroscience information. The information stored in the NLB can also be utilized in other ways. A second approach, which is operational on a pilot basis, is for the NLB Web server to create dynamically its own Web page of LinkOut links for each NCBI identifier in the NLB database. This approach can allow other resources (in addition to the NCBI Entrez) to LinkOut to related neuroscience information. Photoluminescence Detected Doublet Structure in the Integer and Fractional Quantum Hall Regime
We present here the results of polarized magneto-photoluminescence
measurements on a high mobility single-heterojunction. The presence of a
doublet structure over a large magnetic field range (2>nu>1/6) is interpreted
as possible evidence for the existence of a magneto-roton minima of the charged
density waves. This is understood as an indication of strong electronic
correlation even in the case of the IQHE limit.Comment: submitted to Solid State Communication
The Peierls substitution in an engineered lattice potential
Artificial gauge fields open new possibilities to realize quantum many-body
systems with ultracold atoms, by engineering Hamiltonians usually associated
with electronic systems. In the presence of a periodic potential, artificial
gauge fields may bring ultracold atoms closer to the quantum Hall regime. Here,
we describe a one-dimensional lattice derived purely from effective
Zeeman-shifts resulting from a combination of Raman coupling and radiofrequency
magnetic fields. In this lattice, the tunneling matrix element is generally
complex. We control both the amplitude and the phase of this tunneling
parameter, experimentally realizing the Peierls substitution for ultracold
