EU/Th AND 14C isotope dating of lake sediments from sacred lake and lake Nkunga, Kenya
In the tropical regions, lake and swamp sediment core chronologies have traditionally been established solely by radiocarbon dating. In several instances, however, the radiocarbon sampling resolution has been coarse, entailing extrapolations over time periods where there may have been considerable change in sedimentation rates related, for example, to significant, albeit abrupt, palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental change. Moreover, some cores may age-wise exceed the radiocarbon dating limit of ca.40,000 yr, thus entailing tenuous extrapolations of radiocarbon dates obtained in the younger sections of the core in order to obtain a whole corechronology. In this paper, the chronology of lake sediment cores retrieved from Sacred Lake and Lake Nkunga on the north-eastern flank of Mount Kenya is established using a combination of highresolution radiocarbon dating and experimental U/Th dating to circumvent the drawbacks mentionedabove. The derived chronosequences, which show that these sediment records span almost the whole of the late Quaternary period, demonstrate the efficacy and synergism of these dating techniques
The nature of the variable millimetreâselected AGN in the brightest cluster galaxy of Abell 851
We present the detection of a bright 3âmm continuum source in the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in Abell 0851 (z = 0.411) with the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA). When this detection is compared to other multifrequency observations across 21cmâ 100ÎŒm, including new Arcminute Microkelvin Imager 15âGHz observations, we find evidence for a relatively flat, variable core source associated with the BCG. The radio power and amplitude of variability observed in this galaxy is consistent with the cores in lower redshift BCGs in X-rayâselected clusters, and the flat mmâcm spectrum is suggestive of the BCG being a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus archetype. The discovery of this system could provide a basis for a long-term study of the role of low-luminosity radio mode âregulatoryâ feedback in massive clusters
AMI-LA observations of the SuperCLASS supercluster
We present a deep survey of the SuperCLASS super-cluster - a region of sky
known to contain five Abell clusters at redshift - performed using
the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI) Large Array (LA) at 15.5GHz. Our
survey covers an area of approximately 0.9 square degrees. We achieve a nominal
sensitivity of Jy beam toward the field centre, finding 80
sources above a threshold. We derive the radio colour-colour
distribution for sources common to three surveys that cover the field and
identify three sources with strongly curved spectra - a high-frequency-peaked
source and two GHz-peaked-spectrum sources. The differential source count (i)
agrees well with previous deep radio source count, (ii) exhibits no evidence of
an emerging population of star-forming galaxies, down to a limit of 0.24mJy,
and (iii) disagrees with some models of the 15GHz source population.
However, our source count is in agreement with recent work that provides an
analytical correction to the source count from the SKADS Simulated Sky,
supporting the suggestion that this discrepancy is caused by an abundance of
flat-spectrum galaxy cores as-yet not included in source population models
Involvement of the V2 Vasopressin Receptor in Adaptation to Limited Water Supply
Mammals adapted to a great variety of habitats with different accessibility to water. In addition to changes in kidney morphology, e.g. the length of the loops of Henle, several hormone systems are involved in adaptation to limited water supply, among them the renal-neurohypophysial vasopressin/vasopressin receptor system. Comparison of over 80 mammalian V2 vasopressin receptor (V2R) orthologs revealed high structural and functional conservation of this key component involved in renal water reabsorption. Although many mammalian species have unlimited access to water there is no evidence for complete loss of V2R function indicating an essential role of V2R activity for survival even of those species. In contrast, several marsupial V2R orthologs show a significant increase in basal receptor activity. An increased vasopressin-independent V2R activity can be interpreted as a shift in the set point of the renal-neurohypophysial hormone circuit to realize sufficient water reabsorption already at low hormone levels. As found in other desert mammals arid-adapted marsupials show high urine osmolalities. The gain of basal V2R function in several marsupials may contribute to the increased urine concentration abilities and, therefore, provide an advantage to maintain water and electrolyte homeostasis under limited water supply conditions
Energetic eruptions leading to a peculiar hydrogen-rich explosion of a massive star
Every supernova so far observed has been considered to be the terminal explosion of a star. Moreover, all supernovae with absorption lines in their spectra show those lines decreasing in velocity over time, as the ejecta expand and thin, revealing slower-moving material that was previously hidden. In addition, every supernova that exhibits the absorption lines of hydrogen has one main light-curve peak, or a plateau in luminosity, lasting approximately 100 days before declining1. Here we report observations of iPTF14hls, an event that has spectra identical to a hydrogen-rich core-collapse supernova, but characteristics that differ extensively from those of known supernovae. The light curve has at least five peaks and remains bright for more than 600 days; the absorption lines show little to no decrease in velocity; and the radius of the line-forming region is more than an order of magnitude bigger than the radius of the photosphere derived from the continuum emission. These characteristics are consistent with a shell of several tens of solar masses ejected by the progenitor star at supernova-level energies a few hundred days before a terminal explosion. Another possible eruption was recorded at the same position in 1954. Multiple energetic pre-supernova eruptions are expected to occur in stars of 95 to 130 solar masses, which experience the pulsational pair instability2,3,4,5. That model, however, does not account for the continued presence of hydrogen, or the energetics observed here. Another mechanism for the violent ejection of mass in massive stars may be required
Use of different RT-QuIC substrates for detecting CWD prions in the brain of Norwegian cervids
Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a highly contagious prion disease affecting captive and free-ranging cervid populations. CWD has been detected in United States, Canada, South Korea and, most recently, in Europe (Norway, Finland and Sweden). Animals with CWD release infectious prions in the environment through saliva, urine and feces sustaining disease spreading between cervids but also potentially to other non-cervids ruminants (e.g. sheep, goats and cattle). In the light of these considerations and due to CWD unknown zoonotic potential, it is of utmost importance to follow specific surveillance programs useful to minimize disease spreading and transmission. The European community has already in place specific surveillance measures, but the traditional diagnostic tests performed on nervous or lymphoid tissues lack sensitivity. We have optimized a Real-Time Quaking-Induced Conversion (RT-QuIC) assay for detecting CWD prions with high sensitivity and specificity to try to overcome this problem. In this work, we show that bank vole prion protein (PrP) is an excellent substrate for RT-QuIC reactions, enabling the detection of trace-amounts of CWD prions, regardless of prion strain and cervid species. Beside supporting the traditional diagnostic tests, this technology could be exploited for detecting prions in peripheral tissues from live animals, possibly even at preclinical stages of the disease
Influence of management practice on the microbiota of a critically endangered species: A longitudinal study of kÄkÄpĆ chick faeces and associated nest litter
Background: The critically endangered kÄkÄpĆ is a flightless, nocturnal parrot endemic to Aotearoa New Zealand. Recent efforts to describe the gastrointestinal microbial community of this threatened herbivore revealed a low-diversity microbiota that is often dominated by Escherichia-Shigella bacteria. Given the importance of associated microbial communities to animal health, and increasing appreciation of their potential relevance to threatened species conservation, we sought to better understand the development of this unusual gut microbiota profile. To this end, we conducted a longitudinal analysis of faecal material collected from kÄkÄpĆ chicks during the 2019 breeding season, in addition to associated nest litter material.
Results: Using an experimental approach rarely seen in studies of threatened species microbiota, we evaluated the impact of a regular conservation practice on the developing kÄkÄpĆ microbiota, namely the removal of faecal material from nests. Artificially removing chick faeces from nests had negligible impact on bacterial community diversity for either chicks or nests (p > 0.05). However, the gut microbiota did change significantly over time as chick age increased (p < 0.01), with an increasing relative abundance of Escherichia-Shigella coli over the study period and similar observations for the associated nest litter microbiota (p < 0.01). Supplementary feeding substantially altered gut bacterial diversity of kÄkÄpĆ chicks (p < 0.01), characterised by a significant increase in Lactobacillus bacteria.
Conclusions: Overall, chick age and hand rearing conditions had the most marked impact on faecal bacterial communities. Similarly, the surrounding nest litter microbiota changed significantly over time since a kÄkÄpĆ chick was first placed in the nest, though we found no evidence that removal of faecal material influenced the bacterial communities of either litter or faecal samples. Taken together, these observations will inform ongoing conservation and management of this most enigmatic of bird species
A comprehensive overview of radioguided surgery using gamma detection probe technology
The concept of radioguided surgery, which was first developed some 60 years ago, involves the use of a radiation detection probe system for the intraoperative detection of radionuclides. The use of gamma detection probe technology in radioguided surgery has tremendously expanded and has evolved into what is now considered an established discipline within the practice of surgery, revolutionizing the surgical management of many malignancies, including breast cancer, melanoma, and colorectal cancer, as well as the surgical management of parathyroid disease. The impact of radioguided surgery on the surgical management of cancer patients includes providing vital and real-time information to the surgeon regarding the location and extent of disease, as well as regarding the assessment of surgical resection margins. Additionally, it has allowed the surgeon to minimize the surgical invasiveness of many diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, while still maintaining maximum benefit to the cancer patient. In the current review, we have attempted to comprehensively evaluate the history, technical aspects, and clinical applications of radioguided surgery using gamma detection probe technology
Groin wound infection after vascular exposure ( GIVE ) multicentre cohort study
Surgical site infections (SSIs) of groin wounds are a common and potentially preventable cause of morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs in vascular surgery. Our aim was to define the contemporaneous rate of groin SSIs, determine clinical sequelae, and identify risk factors for SSI.
An international multicentre prospective observational cohort study of consecutive patients undergoing groin incision for femoral vessel access in vascular surgery was undertaken over 3 months, followâup was 90âdays. The primary outcome was the incidence of groin wound SSI.
1337 groin incisions (1039 patients) from 37 centres were included. 115 groin incisions (8.6%) developed SSI, of which 62 (4.6%) were superficial. Patients who developed an SSI had a significantly longer length of hospital stay (6 versus 5âdays, P = .005), a significantly higher rate of postâoperative acute kidney injury (19.6% versus 11.7%, P = .018), with no significant difference in 90âday mortality. Female sex, Body mass indexâ„30 kg/m2, ischaemic heart disease, aqueous betadine skin preparation, bypass/patch use (vein, xenograft, or prosthetic), and increased operative time were independent predictors of SSI.
Groin infections, which are clinically apparent to the treating vascular unit, are frequent and their development carries significant clinical sequelae. Risk factors include modifiable and nonâmodifiable variables
