Reading “Women Don’t Riot” After the Riot: Creating a University-Prison Collaboration

    Get PDF
We examine a case study of a collaboration between a University and a Women’s Correctional Institution: an Inside Out college course that brings together incarcerated and traditional students. We analyze the creation of a class in the aftermath of a riot in the region and in the ongoing context of internal and external reforms. We provide specific examples of mistakes, lessons learned, and the impact of our pedagogical values and techniques, and provide links to our class materials. We emphasize communication between the institutions, from the students to instructors, among the instructors, and from instructors to students. In the classroom, we exploit our expertise and our non-expertise as learners together to break down perceived barriers. We also emphasize the value of self-care and recognition of all students as agentic. We conclude with a call for future research that attends to student agency and that examines who benefits from prison-university partnerships

The purpose of this research was to study the impact of migrant student identification or non-identification by receiving schools on academic achievement. The relationship between migrant students\u27 achievement and the condition of identification by receiving schools and potential correlates, gender, age, birthplace and language proficiency was also analyzed. This is a four year longitudinal study on one hundred seventy five migrant students\u27 academic achievement in grades third, fourth, fifth and sixth. The study is divided into two parts. The first part is the data analysis of student records obtained from the New Generation System (NGS), which records the identification or non-identification and school achievement of migrant students. The second part is an analysis of the effect of identification or non-identification by receiving schools on the academic achievement of migrant students as measured by the state assessment, Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS). Student records from eight schools in four school districts located in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas were examined for the effects of identification. In addition to identification, the study included gender, age, place of birth and language proficiency. The results of the study indicated that the condition of identification of migrant students by receiving schools has no impact on academic achievement in reading, mathematics, writing in fourth grades, fifth or sixth grades. Data showed that language proficiency was the variable, which accounted for or explained the largest proportion of the variance in academic achievement in reading, mathematics, writing in fourth, fifth and sixth grades. The effect size of language proficiency increased across the reviewed grade levels in reading and mathematics. The percentage of migrant students not tested increased across the grade levels. The percentage of migrant students not tested in the appropriate language also increased across the fourth, fifth and sixth grades

Influence of the crack-tip hydride concentration on the fracture toughness of Zircaloy-4

International audienceThe influence of a hydrogen concentration gradient at the crack-tip and hydride platelet orientation on the fracture toughness, fracture mode and micromechanisms of a Zircaloy-4 commercial alloy was studied. Fracture toughness was measured on CT specimens and the analysis was performed in terms of J-integral resistance curves at temperatures ranging from 293 to 473 K. Fracture toughness results of specimens containing higher hydrides concentration near the crack-tip region, preferentially orientated in the crack plane, were compared to those obtained from specimens with a homogeneous hydrogen distribution and different platelet orientation; specimens were obtained by charging them in loaded and unloaded condition, respectively. Changes on both macroscopic and microscopic fracture behaviour were observed at temperatures ranging from 293 to 343 K, and the results show the relevance of both hydride concentration and platelet orientation. The existence of a ductile-to-brittle transition is discussed at the light of these new results

We observe the arrival of Chilean workers at the northeast of Chubut (Patagonia Argentina) during the years after the 1973 coup. h e industrialization development subsidized by the Argentine government in the northeast of Chubut raised the need of for more workers who would work in factories that were installed.

    Get PDF

Cylindrically symmetric spinning Brans-Dicke spacetimes with closed timelike curves

We present here three new solutions of Brans-Dicke theory for a stationary geometry with cylindrical symmetry in the presence of matter in rigid rotation with Tμμ0T^\mu_\mu\neq 0. All the solutions have eternal closed timelike curves in some region of the spacetime, the size of which depends on ω\omega. Moreover, two of them do not go over a solution of general relativity in the limit ω\omega \to \infty.Comment: revtex, 10 pages, 1 figure in p

Measurement of Service Quality for Systems with Dependency Loops and Mixed Cohorts

    Get PDF
The purpose of this dissertation is to develop an instrument to measure the quality, quality changes and the efficiency of a service system with dependency loops on an ongoing basis in order to provide timely feedback for decision-makers and to set the basis for a continuous improvement cycle. This instrument is developed using an engineering educational system as the prime example. The first outcome has been a data driven Strengths and Weakness (SW) analysis. It consists of four steps - data collection, data summarization, display of proportions (data aggregated into positive, neutral and negative perceptions), and the construction of a SW table by using a set of heuristic rules that reflects the decision-maker's desired level of sensitivity for the methodology. The core of the method resides in selecting the category with the largest proportion for a finite population where each element is classified into exactly one of k mutually exclusive categories. The heuristic rules used for classification are justified using the concepts of statistical ranking and selection procedures. Applications of the SW table in cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses are given. Special graphs, e.g. the one-dimensional and two-dimensional arrows that help the analysis have been constructed so as to provide aid to the decision makers in the engineering educational system. The second outcome provides a scheme for the evaluation of the relative efficiency of processes within this type of service system. Data Envelopment Analysis has been used iteratively to evaluate the efficiency of levels and programs within an engineering educational service system. This is used to chart the changes in students' perceptions as they progress during their career from the freshmen to the senior level
