Self consistent description of the interplay between shape and pairing deformations : Static properties
The competition between pairing and multipole fields is studied within the framework of a two-level model, employing different theoretical approaches. The importance of a self-consistent tretment is clearly revealed. Performance evaluation of attribute-based encryption in automotive embedded platform for secure software over-the-air update
This paper aims to show that it is possible to improve security for over the air update functionalities in an automotive scenario through the use of a cryptographic scheme, called âAttribute-Based-Encryptionâ (ABE), which grants confidentiality to the software/firmware update done Over The Air (OTA). We demonstrate that ABE is seamlessly integrable into the state of the art solutions regarding the OTA update by showing that the overhead of the ABE integration in terms of computation time and its storage is negligible w.r.t. the other overheads that are introduced by the OTA process, also proving that security can be enhanced with a minimum cost. In order to support our claim, we report the experimental results of an implementation of the proposed ABE OTA technique on a Xilinx ZCU102 evaluation board, which is an automotive-oriented HW/SW platform that is equipped with a Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC chip that is representative of the computing capability of real automotive Electronic Control Units (ECUs)
Thermal treatment of the minority game
We study a cost function for the aggregate behavior of all the agents
involved in the Minority Game (MG) or the Bar Attendance Model (BAM). The cost
function allows to define a deterministic, synchronous dynamics that yields
results that have the main relevant features than those of the probabilistic,
sequential dynamics used for the MG or the BAM. We define a temperature through
a Langevin approach in terms of the fluctuations of the average attendance. We
prove that the cost function is an extensive quantity that can play the role of
an internal energy of the many agent system while the temperature so defined is
an intensive parameter. We compare the results of the thermal perturbation to
the deterministic dynamics and prove that they agree with those obtained with
the MG or BAM in the limit of very low temperature.Comment: 9 pages in PRE format, 6 figure
The BaBar Event Building and Level-3 Trigger Farm Upgrade
The BaBar experiment is the particle detector at the PEP-II B-factory
facility at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. During the summer shutdown
2002 the BaBar Event Building and Level-3 trigger farm were upgraded from 60
Sun Ultra-5 machines and 100MBit/s Ethernet to 50 Dual-CPU 1.4GHz Pentium-III
systems with Gigabit Ethernet. Combined with an upgrade to Gigabit Ethernet on
the source side and a major feature extraction software speedup, this pushes
the performance of the BaBar event builder and L3 filter to 5.5kHz at current
background levels, almost three times the original design rate of 2kHz. For our
specific application the new farm provides 8.5 times the CPU power of the old

Detecção digital de doenças e vigilùncia participativa: panorama e perspectivas para o Brasil
This study aimed to describe the digital disease detection and participatory surveillance in different countries. The systems or platforms consolidated in the scientific field were analyzed by describing the strategy, type of data source, main objectives, and manner of interaction with users. Eleven systems or platforms, developed from 1996 to 2016, were analyzed. There was a higher frequency of data mining on the web and active crowdsourcing as well as a trend in the use of mobile applications. It is important to provoke debate in the academia and health services for the evolution of methods and insights into participatory surveillance in the digital age.O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever a detecção digital de doenças e vigilĂąncia participativa em diferentes paĂses. Os sistemas ou plataformas consolidados no meio cientĂfico foram analisados por descrição da estratĂ©gia, do tipo de fonte de dados, dos objetivos principais e da forma de interação com os usuĂĄrios. Foram analisados 11 sistemas ou plataformas, desenvolvidos entre 1996 e 2016. The central role of iron in human nutrition : from folk to contemporary medicine
Iron is a fundamental element in human history, from the dawn of civilization to contemporary days. The ancients used the metal to shape tools, to forge weapons, and even as a dietary supplement. This last indication has been handed down until today, when martial therapy is considered fundamental to correct deficiency states of anemia. The improvement of the martial status is mainly targeted with dietary supplements that often couple diverse co-factors, but other methods are available, such as parenteral preparations, dietary interventions, or real-world approaches. The oral absorption of this metal occurs in the duodenum and is highly dependent upon its oxidation state, with many absorption influencers possibly interfering with the intestinal uptake. Bone marrow and spleen represent the initial and ultimate step of iron metabolism, respectively, and the most part of body iron circulates bound to specific proteins and mainly serves to synthesize hemoglobin for new red blood cells. Whatever the martial status is, today\u2019s knowledge about iron biochemistry allows us to embrace exceedingly personalized interventions, which however owe their success to the mythical and historical events that always accompanied this metal
Bacterial Biofilm Material Properties Enable Removal and Transfer by Capillary Peeling
Biofilms, surfaceâattached communities of bacterial cells, are a concern in health and in industrial operations because of persistent infections, clogging of flows, and surface fouling. Extracellular matrices provide mechanical protection to biofilmâdwelling cells as well as protection from chemical insults, including antibiotics. Understanding how biofilm material properties arise from constituent matrix components and how these properties change in different environments is crucial for designing biofilm removal strategies. Here, using rheological characterization and surface analyses of Vibrio cholerae biofilms, it is discovered how extracellular polysaccharides, proteins, and cells function together to define biofilm mechanical and interfacial properties. Using insight gained from our measurements, a facile capillary peeling technology is developed to remove biofilms from surfaces or to transfer intact biofilms from one surface to another. It is shown that the findings are applicable to other biofilmâforming bacterial species and to multiple surfaces. Thus, the technology and the understanding that have been developed could potentially be employed to characterize and/or treat biofilmârelated infections and industrial biofouling problems
Factoring in a Dissipative Quantum Computer
We describe an array of quantum gates implementing Shor's algorithm for prime
factorization in a quantum computer. The array includes a circuit for modular
exponentiation with several subcomponents (such as controlled multipliers,
adders, etc) which are described in terms of elementary Toffoli gates. We
present a simple analysis of the impact of losses and decoherence on the
performance of this quantum factoring circuit. For that purpose, we simulate a
quantum computer which is running the program to factor N = 15 while
interacting with a dissipative environment. As a consequence of this
interaction randomly selected qubits may spontaneously decay. Using the results
of our numerical simulations we analyze the efficiency of some simple error

Oral Supplementation With Sucrosomial Ferric Pyrophosphate Plus L-Ascorbic Acid to Ameliorate the Martial Status: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Altered martial indices before orthopedic surgery are associated with higher rates of complications and greatly affect the patient's functional ability. Oral supplements can optimize the preoperative martial status, with clinical efficacy and the patient's tolerability being highly dependent on the pharmaceutical formula. Patients undergoing elective hip/knee arthroplasty were randomized to be supplemented with a 30-day oral therapy of sucrosomial ferric pyrophosphate plus L-ascorbic acid. The tolerability was 2.7% among treated patients. Adjustments for confounding factors, such as iron absorption influencers, showed a relevant response limited to older patients ( 65 65 years old), whose uncharacterized Hb loss was averted upon treatment with iron formula. Older patients with no support lost -2.8 \ub1 5.1%, while the intervention group gained +0.7 \ub1 4.6% of circulating hemoglobin from baseline (p = 0.019). Gastrointestinal diseases, medications, and possible dietary factors could affect the efficacy of iron supplements. Future opportunities may consider to couple ferric pyrophosphate with other nutrients, to pay attention in avoiding absorption disruptors, or to implement interventions to obtain an earlier martial status optimization at the population level
