Synchronization of the Frenet-Serret linear system with a chaotic nonlinear system by feedback of states
A synchronization procedure of the generalized type in the sense of Rulkov et
al [Phys. Rev. E 51, 980 (1995)] is used to impose a nonlinear Malasoma chaotic
motion on the Frenet-Serret system of vectors in the differential geometry of
space curves. This could have applications to the mesoscopic motion of
biological filamentsComment: 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted at Int. J. Theor. Phy
Anionic surfactant biodegradation in seawater
The authors conducted a study of the influence of several environmental factors (temperature, salinity, luminosity, aeration and the presence of sediments) on the biodegradation of a commercial anionic surfactant (LAS) in waters and sediments of Cadiz Bay (southwest Iberian Peninsula). The assay was carried out using an adaptation of the river die-away test. At temperatures of 20-25 °C, degradation exceeded 90 % within less than 10 days of assays, whereas at temperatures under 10 °C, degradation scarcely took place. Luminosity increases the degradation speed, compared with assays performed under darkness. Finally, the results show that the rate of surfactant degradation was remarkably accelerated in the presence of sediments, except in those tests where anoxic conditions were established.
One-dimensional dynamics of nearly unstable axisymmetric liquid bridges
A general one-dimensional model is considered that describes the dynamics of slender, axisymmetric, noncylindrical liquid bridges between two equal disks. Such model depends on two adjustable parameters and includes as particular cases the standard Lee and Cosserat models. For slender liquid bridges, the model provides sufficiently accurate results and involves much easier and faster calculations than the full three-dimensional model. In particular, viscous effects are easily accounted for. The one-dimensional model is used to derive a simple weakly nonlinear description of the dynamics near the instability limit. Small perturbations of marginal instability conditions are also considered that account for volume perturbations, nonequality of the supporting disks, and axial gravity. The analysis shows that the dynamics breaks the reflection symmetry on the midplane between the supporting disks. The weakly nonlinear evolution of the amplitude of the perturbation is given by a Duffing equation, whose coefficients are calculated in terms of the slenderness as a part of the analysis and exhibit a weak dependence on the adjustable parameters of the one-dimensional model. The amplitude equation is used to make quantitative predictions of both the (first stage of) breakage for unstable configurations and the (slow) dynamics for stable configurations
Alexandrov spaces with integral current structure
We endow each closed, orientable Alexandrov space with an integral current of weight equal to 1, , in other words, we prove that is an integral current space with no boundary. Combining this result with a result of Li and Perales, we show that non-collapsing sequences of these spaces with uniform lower curvature and diameter bounds admit subsequences whose Gromov-Hausdorff and intrinsic flat limits agree
High-pressure structural investigation of several zircon-type orthovanadates
Room temperature angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements on
zircon-type EuVO4, LuVO4, and ScVO4 were performed up to 27 GPa. In the three
compounds we found evidence of a pressure-induced structural phase
transformation from zircon to a scheelite-type structure. The onset of the
transition is near 8 GPa, but the transition is sluggish and the low- and
high-pressure phases coexist in a pressure range of about 10 GPa. In EuVO4 and
LuVO4 a second transition to a M-fergusonite-type phase was found near 21 GPa.
The equations of state for the zircon and scheelite phases are also determined.
Among the three studied compounds, we found that ScVO4 is less compressible
than EuVO4 and LuVO4, being the most incompressible orthovanadate studied to
date. The sequence of structural transitions and compressibilities are
discussed in comparison with other zircon-type oxides.Comment: 34 pages, 2 Tables, 11 Figure
Exercise during pregnancy. A narrative review asking: What do we know?
Although there is no consensus as to whether exercise is beneficial during pregnancy, most studies report it poses no risk to either the mother or the fetus, and many suggest it to be beneficial to both. This review, which examines the evidence available, also reveals the many differences in study design followed, the type of exercise undertaken and the variables measured, which make it difficult to compare results. Advances in our understanding of the effects of exercise during pregnancy might best be made by undertaking randomised clinical trials with standardised protocols. However, most of the studies examining the relationship between exercise and pregnancy report no complications on maternal or fetal well-being. This is also in line with recent review studies advising that the pregnant population without obstetric contraindications should be encouraged to exercise during pregnancy. Therefore, the results of the present review stimulate those responsible for the healthcare of the pregnant woman to recommend moderate exercise throughout pregnancy without risk to maternal and fetal health
Penning collisions of laser-cooled metastable helium atoms
We present experimental results on the two-body loss rates in a
magneto-optical trap of metastable helium atoms. Absolute rates are measured in
a systematic way for several laser detunings ranging from -5 to -30 MHz and at
different intensities, by monitoring the decay of the trap fluorescence. The
dependence of the two-body loss rate coefficient on the excited state
() and metastable state () populations is also investigated.
From these results we infer a rather uniform rate constant
cm/s.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, Revte
Manipulating quantum information by propagation
We study creation of bi- and multipartite continuous variable entanglement in
structures of coupled quantum harmonic oscillators. By adjusting the
interaction strengths between nearest neighbors we show how to maximize the
entanglement production between the arms in a Y-shaped structure where an
initial single mode squeezed state is created in the first oscillator of the
input arm. We also consider the action of the same structure as an approximate
quantum cloner. For a specific time in the system dynamics the last oscillators
in the output arms can be considered as imperfect copies of the initial state.
By increasing the number of arms in the structure, multipartite entanglement is
obtained, as well as 1 to M cloning. Finally, we are considering configurations
that implement the symmetric splitting of an initial entangled state. All
calculations are carried out within the framework of the rotating wave
approximation in quantum optics, and our predictions could be tested with
current available experimental techniques.Comment: 9 pages, APS forma
On the Impact of Re-Evaluation in 5G NR V2X Mode 2
5G NR V2X has been designed to support advanced connected and automated driving V2X services. These services are characterized by variable traffic patterns that can generate packet collisions in decentralized systems where vehicles autonomously select their radio resources like 5G NR V2X mode 2. 5G NR V2X introduces a re-evaluation mechanism at the MAC layer to detect and avoid possible packet collisions before a vehicle transmits in selected resources. Most of the studies conducted to date on 5G NR V2X do not consider the re-evaluation mechanism despite being a mandatory MAC feature. This article advances the state of the art with an in-depth analysis and evaluation of the operation and performance of re-evaluation in 5G NR V2X mode 2 under different traffic patterns and mode 2 configurations. The study shows that re-evaluation is effective in avoiding collisions with periodic traffic but its effectiveness decreases with aperiodic traffic and of variable size. The study also shows that re-evaluation is effective in avoiding collisions generated by the retransmission of packets. However, its overall impact on the performance of 5G NR V2X mode 2 is small, while it can have a relevant implementation cost due to the frequent re-evaluation checks and resource reselections. This raises questions on the current design of the re-evaluation mechanism that is a mandatory feature in 5G NR V2X mode 2
