Aromatic molecules as sustainable lubricants explored by ab initio simulations
In the pursuit of sustainable lubricant materials, the conversion of common
organic molecules into graphitic material has been recently shown to
effectively reduce friction of metallic interfaces. Aromatic molecules are
perfect candidates due to their inertness and possibility to form carbon-based
tribofilms. Among many promising possibilities, we selected a group of common
aromatic compounds and we investigated their capability to reduce the adhesion
of iron interface. Ab initio molecular dynamic simulations of the sliding
interface show that hypericin, a component of St. John's wort, effectively
separates the mating iron surfaces better than graphene. This phenomenon is due
to the size of the molecule, the reactivity of the moieties at its edges and
the possibility to stack several of these structures that can easily slide on
top of each other. The decomposition of the lateral groups of hypericin
observed in the dynamic simulations suggests that the clustering of several
molecules is possible, offering innovative paths to lubricate sliding contacts
with compounds not typically employed in tribology
How emerging technologies shape the future of work
This prologue to the European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology special issue on emerging technologies at work starts with a brief overview of the eight articles that are included. Next, five key insights for research on emerging technologies at work are discussed. First, when studing emerging technologies at work, better use of already existing theoretical knowledge in work and organizational psychology should be made. Second, work and organizational psychology knowledge should be integrated with that of adjacent disciplines that are also involved in research on emerging technologies at work, to obtain a holistic picture.Third, research should take the diversity of roles and functions that emerging technologies can take on in the workplace into account. Fourth, to study the complex and dynamic mechanisms shaping the collaboration between humans and emerging technologies, a multilevel perspective is warranted. Finally, research should comprise the full life cycle of emerging technologies at work, from their initial conception to their use. Importance of the catalytic effect of the substrate in the functionality of lubricant additives: the case of MoDTC
Molybdenum dithiocarbamates (MoDTCs) are lubricant additives very efficient
in reducing the friction of steel and they are employed in a number of
industrial applications. The functionality of these additives is ruled by the
chemical interactions occurring at the buried sliding interface, which are of
key importance for the improvement of the lubrication performance. Yet, these
tribochemical processes are very difficult to monitor in real time. Ab initio
molecular dynamics simulations are the ideal tool to shed light into such a
complicated reactivity. In this work we perform ab initio simulations, both in
static and tribological conditions, to understand the effect of surface
oxidation on the tribochemical reactivity of MoDTC and we find that when the
surfaces are covered by oxygen, the first dissociative steps of the additives
are significantly hindered. Our preliminary tribological tests on oxidized
steel discs support these results. Bare metallic surfaces are necessary for a
stable adsorption of the additives, their quick decomposition, and the
formation of a durable MoS tribolayer. This work demonstrates the
importance of the catalytic role of the substrate and confirms the full
capability of the computational protocol in the pursuit of materials and
compounds more efficient in reducing friction
Experimental and Ab Initio Characterization of Mononuclear Molybdenum Dithiocarbamates in Lubricant Mixtures
Molybdenum dithiocarbamates (MoDTCs) are a class of lubricant additives widely employed in automotives. Most of the studies concerning MoDTC take into account the dimeric structures because of their industrial relevance, with the mononuclear compounds usually neglected, because isolating and characterizing subgroups of MoDTC molecules are generally difficult. However, the byproducts of the synthesis of MoDTC can impact the friction reduction performance at metallic interfaces, and the effect of mononuclear MoDTC (mMoDTC) compounds in the lubrication has not been considered yet in the literature. In this study, we consider for the first time the impurities of MoDTC consisting of mononuclear compounds and combine experimental and computational techniques to elucidate the interaction of these impurities with binuclear MoDTC in commercial formulations. We present a preliminary strategy to separate a commercial MoDTC product in chemically different fractions. These fractions present different tribological behaviors depending on the relative amount of mononuclear and binuclear complexes. The calculations indicate that the dissociation mechanism of mMoDTC is similar to the one observed for the dimeric structures. However, the different chemical properties of mMoDTC impact the kinetics for the formation of the beneficial molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) layers, as shown by the tribological experiments. These results help to understand the functionality of MoDTC lubricant additives, providing new insights into the complex synergy between the different chemical structures
Role of the High Affinity Immunoglobulin E Receptor in Bacterial Translocation and Intestinal Inflammation
A role for immunoglobulin E and its high affinity receptor (FcεRI) in the control of bacterial pathogenicity and intestinal inflammation has been suggested, but relevant animal models are lacking. Here we compare transgenic mice expressing a humanized FcεRI (hFcεRI), with a cell distribution similar to that in humans, to FcεRI-deficient animals. In hFcεRI transgenic mice, levels of colonic interleukin 4 were higher, the composition of fecal flora was greatly modified, and bacterial translocation towards mesenteric lymph nodes was increased. In hFcεRI transgenic mice, 2,4,6-tri-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis was also more pronounced, whereas FcεRI-deficient animals were protected from colitis, demonstrating that FcεRI can affect the onset of intestinal inflammation
Detecting functional decline from normal aging to dementia: Development and validation of a short version of the Amsterdam IADL Questionnaire
Introduction Detecting functional decline from normal aging to dementia is relevant for diagnostic and prognostic purposes. Therefore, the Amsterdam IADL Questionnaire (A-IADL-Q) was developed: a 70-item proxy-based tool with good psychometric properties. We aimed to design a short version while preserving its psychometric quality. Methods Study partners of subjects (n = 1355), ranging from cognitively normal to dementia subjects, completed the original A-IADL-Q. We selected the short version items using a stepwise procedure combining missing data, Item Response Theory, and input from respondents and experts. We investigated internal consistency of the short version and concordance with the original version. To assess its construct validity, we additionally investigated concordance between the short version and the Mini–Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Disability Assessment for Dementia (DAD). Finally, we investigated differences in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) scores between diagnostic groups across the dementia spectrum. Results We selected 30 items covering the entire spectrum of IADL functioning. Internal consistency (0.98) and concordance with the original version (0.97) were very high. Concordance with the MMSE (0.72) and DAD (0.87) scores was high. IADL impairment scores increased across the spectrum from normal cognition to dementia. Discussion The A-IADL-Q short version (A-IADL-Q-SV) consists of 30 items and has maintained the psychometric quality of the original A-IADL-Q. Is manipulative therapy more effective than sham manipulation in adults?: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Background: Manipulative therapy is widely used in the treatment of spinal disorders. Manipulative techniques are under debate because of the possibility of adverse events. To date, the efficacy of manipulations compared to sham manipulations is unclear. The purpose of the study is: to assess the efficacy of manipulative therapy compared to sham in adults with a variety of complaints.Study design: Systematic review and meta-analysis.Methods: Bibliographic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, PEDro, Central) along with a hand search of selected bibliographies were searched from inception up to April 2012.Two reviewers independently selected randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that evaluated manipulative therapy compared to sham manipulative therapy in adults, assessed risk of bias and extracted data concerning participants, intervention, kind of sham, outcome measures, duration of follow-up, profession, data on efficacy and adverse events. Pooled (standardized) mean differences or risk differences were calculated were possible using a random effects model. The primary outcomes were pain, disability, and perceived recovery. The overall quality of the body of evidence was evaluated using GRADE.Results: In total 965 references were screened for eligibility and 19 RCTs (n = 1080) met the selection criteria. Eight studies were considered of low risk of bias. There is moderate level of evidence that manipulative therapy has a significant effect in adults on pain relief immediately after treatment (standardized mean difference [SMD] - 0.68, 95% confidence interval (-1.06 to -0.31). There is low level of evidence that manipulative therapy has a significant effect in adults on pain relief (SMD - 0.37, -0.69 to -0.04) at short- term follow-up. In patients with musculoskeletal disorders, we found moderate level of evidence for pain relief (SMD - 0.73, -1.21 to -0.25) immediate after treatment and low level of evidence for pain relief (SMD - 0.52, -0.87 to -0.17) at short term-follow-up. We found very low level of evidence that manipulative therapy has no statistically significant effect on disability and perceived (asthma) recovery. Sensitivity analyses did not change the main findings. No serious adverse events were reported in the manipulative therapy or sham group.Conclusions: Manipulative therapy has a clinical relevant effect on pain, but not on disability or perceived (asthma) recovery. Clinicians can refer patients for manipulative therapy to reduce pain
Absolute risk representation in cardiovascular disease prevention: comprehension and preferences of health care consumers and general practitioners involved in a focus group study
Background
Communicating risk is part of primary prevention of coronary heart disease and stroke, collectively referred to as cardiovascular disease (CVD). In Australia, health organisations have promoted an absolute risk approach, thereby raising the question of suitable standardised formats for risk communication.
Methods
Sixteen formats of risk representation were prepared including statements, icons, graphical formats, alone or in combination, and with variable use of colours. All presented the same risk, i.e., the absolute risk for a 55 year old woman, 16% risk of CVD in five years. Preferences for a five or ten-year timeframe were explored. Australian GPs and consumers were recruited for participation in focus groups, with the data analysed thematically and preferred formats tallied.
Results
Three focus groups with health consumers and three with GPs were held, involving 19 consumers and 18 GPs.
Consumers and GPs had similar views on which formats were more easily comprehended and which conveyed 16% risk as a high risk. A simple summation of preferences resulted in three graphical formats (thermometers, vertical bar chart) and one statement format as the top choices. The use of colour to distinguish risk (red, yellow, green) and comparative information (age, sex, smoking status) were important ingredients. Consumers found formats which combined information helpful, such as colour, effect of changing behaviour on risk, or comparison with a healthy older person. GPs preferred formats that helped them relate the information about risk of CVD to their patients, and could be used to motivate patients to change behaviour.
Several formats were reported as confusing, such as a percentage risk with no contextual information, line graphs, and icons, particularly those with larger numbers.
Whilst consumers and GPs shared preferences, the use of one format for all situations was not recommended. Overall, people across groups felt that risk expressed over five years was preferable to a ten-year risk, the latter being too remote.
Conclusions
Consumers and GPs shared preferences for risk representation formats. Both groups liked the option to combine formats and tailor the risk information to reflect a specific individual's risk, to maximise understanding and provide a good basis for discussion
Application of Simple Smart Logic for Waterflooding Reservoir Management
A simple smart logic for controlling inflow control valves (ICV) in waterflooding reservoir management is implemented and analyzed, with the final objective of improving the long term financial return of a petroleum reservoir.
Such a control is based in a reactive simple logic that responds to the watercut measured in the ICV. Basically, when the watercut increases, the ICV is set to close proportionally. For comparison purposes, four strategies are presented: base case scenario with conventional control, the best completion configuration found by trial-and-error, the reactive control, and a deterministic optimal control based on Nonlinear Gradient Method with adjoint-gradient formulation is shown for comparison purposes. Finally, all four strategies are tested again in different reservoir realizations in order to mimic the geological uncertainties.
Two different synthetic reservoir models were studied. First, a simple cube with a five-spot well configuration, in which the permeability field has a horizontal pattern defined by lognormal distributions. The second model is a benchmark proposed by the Dutch university, TU delft, with 101 channelized permeability fields representing river patterns.
For the first model, no significant relative gain is found neither in the variable control nor in the optimal control. Manly because of the high homogeneity of the reservoir models. Therefore, no intelligent completion is recommended. On the other hand, for the second and more complex case, the results indicate an expressive relative gain in the use of simple reactive logic. Besides, this type of control achieves results nearly as good as the optimal control.
The test in different realizations, however, shows that reservoir characterization is still a key part of any attempt to improve production. Although the variable reactive control is semi-independent, with action being taken based on measurements, some parameters need a priori model to be tuned
