Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research
Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4
While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge
of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In
the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of
Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus
crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced
environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian
Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by
2050. This means that unless we take immediate action, we will not be able to establish their current status,
much less monitor how it is changing and what is being lostinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
O império dos mil anos e a arte do "tempo barroco": a águia bicéfala como emblema da Cristandade
The article reveals that between the mid-17th century and the mid-18th century, in the ecclesiastical world of the religious orders (Jesuits, franciscans, Carmelites, Cistercians, Augustinian, etc.) and the episcopate, there was the progressive adoption of the imperial symbol, the double-headed eagle, attribute of the Christian Empire, the germanic Holy Roman Empire emblem. However, in the religious field, this imperial eagle of the baroque time appears without the political insignia (sword, scepter and the imperial orb), adorning altars, monstrances, trumphal archs, facades of temples, doors, walls, domes, pulpits, sacred washbasins, sculptures and paintings of the Virgin and Child, liturgical robes, etc.; therefore related to the cult and the dogmas of the Catholic faith - in artistic works, the association between the double eagle and the flesh-spirit or human-divine unity, axial principle of the Catholic faith, represented by Virgin-Mother and Christ, is often indicated directly. The research has located and identified numerous remnants of the double eagle emblem in religious field in Portugal and Spain and in their conquests and dominions in America, Asia and Africa, and also in Italy, and the historiography on painful birth of the modern era in the West has never realized this phenomenon. Symbolizing absolute power, universal power, these works with sacred significance, as the ecclesiastical discourse of the time, demonstrate movement occurred in religious plane. With the aim to assert not only spiritual but also temporal power of Christ and his mystical body, the Church was impelled by the idea of restoring the "Republica Christiana" or Christendon - disrupted by conflicts of power and faith - and of introducing a Universal Apostolic Monarchy extended to all mankind: the Empire of the Last Days, the Empire of Christ in the world, the fifth Empire
A seguir, alguns tópicos importantes mereceram tratamento à parte: a fome, o alimento e o domínio religioso, as descobertas européias e a difusão mundial de alimentos, gosto e gastronomia. O artigo se encerra com um rápido balanço crítico da historiografia brasileira sobre o tema

Guillain-Barré syndrome and checkpoint inhibitor therapy: insights from pharmacovigilance data
Background There are increasing reports of cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), as an adverse event of an immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) but postmarket data on the incidence of this remains scarce. This study sought to conduct a comprehensive review of GBS events arising as a secondary outcome of ICI treatments in real-world patients, using the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS).Methods Data covering the period from the third quarter of 2003 to the second quarter of 2023 were extracted from the FAERS database. GBS cases (associated with the usage of avelumab, atezolizumab, ipilimumab, nivolumab and pembrolizumab) were subjected to disproportionality analysis to detect potential signals. Results A total of 2208 reports of GBS were identified within the FAERS database, with 242 of these cases (10.9%) being associated with ICIs. All five drugs exhibited a disproportionality in the reporting of adverse events, with the highest observed for avelumab (reporting OR, ROR: 29.8), followed by atezolizumab (ROR: 17.0), ipilimumab (ROR: 16.0), pembrolizumab (ROR: 11.9) and nivolumab (ROR: 8.2).Conclusion These checkpoint inhibitors are associated with a statistically significant disproportionate number of reports of GBS as an adverse event, with avelumab being the ICI with the highest association. The present pharmacovigilance study serves as a valuable tool, offering a more comprehensive and nuanced perspective on GBS associated with ICIs. This study contributes to a deeper comprehension of this rare adverse drug effect
The aim of this work was to evaluate the performance, dressing and fillet percentage, carcass composition, weight of organs of digestive tract, relative intestine length and hepatica-somatica and viscera-somatica fat indexes of 120 tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) fingerlings fed with diets with 0, 6 or 12% of babassu meal. Babassu meal inclusion did not affect the performance, dressing and fillet percentage and carcass composition. Gastrointestinal tract weight, viscera-somatic fat index and relative intestinal length were not affected, although hepatica-somatic index was reduced with increasing levels of babassu meal, possibly due to an antinutritional factor in the feed. In conclusion, babassu meal might be added in fingerlings tambaqui diets at level of 12% of inclusion
Conversion of an inactive xylose isomerase into a functional enzyme by co-expression of GroEL-GroES chaperonins in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Abstract Background Second-generation ethanol production is a clean bioenergy source with potential to mitigate fossil fuel emissions. The engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for xylose utilization is an essential step towards the production of this biofuel. Though xylose isomerase (XI) is the key enzyme for xylose conversion, almost half of the XI genes are not functional when expressed in S. cerevisiae. To date, protein misfolding is the most plausible hypothesis to explain this phenomenon. Results This study demonstrated that XI from the bacterium Propionibacterium acidipropionici becomes functional in S. cerevisiae when co-expressed with GroEL-GroES chaperonin complex from Escherichia coli. The developed strain BTY34, harboring the chaperonin complex, is able to efficiently convert xylose to ethanol with a yield of 0.44 g ethanol/g xylose. Furthermore, the BTY34 strain presents a xylose consumption rate similar to those observed for strains carrying the widely used XI from the fungus Orpinomyces sp. In addition, the tetrameric XI structure from P. acidipropionici showed an elevated number of hydrophobic amino acid residues on the surface of protein when compared to XI commonly expressed in S. cerevisiae. Conclusions Based on our results, we elaborate an extensive discussion concerning the uncertainties that surround heterologous expression of xylose isomerases in S. cerevisiae. Probably, a correct folding promoted by GroEL-GroES could solve some issues regarding a limited or absent XI activity in S. cerevisiae. The strains developed in this work have promising industrial characteristics, and the designed strategy could be an interesting approach to overcome the non-functionality of bacterial protein expression in yeasts
