Harvest of Wild and Stocked Fish From the Logan River Drainage

    Get PDF
The Logan River heads in the southeastern corner of Franklin County, Idaho, and runs in a south and westerly direction.· It enters the state of Utah through the northern boundary in the northeast corner of Cache County. The main stream is fed by two tributary streams which head in separate directions a few miles apart. The Franklin Basin branch is the main contributing tributary while the Beaver Creek branch is nearly as large

The Impact of Tobacco Control Program Expenditures on Aggregate Cigarette Sales: 1981-1998

    Get PDF
Since the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement between states and the tobacco industry, states have unprecedented resources for programs to reduce tobacco use. Decisions concerning the use of these funds will, in part, be based on the experiences of states with existing programs. We review the experiences of several states that have adopted comprehensive tobacco control programs. We also report estimates from econometric analyses of the impact of tobacco control expenditures on aggregate tobacco use in all states and in selected states with comprehensive programs for the period from 1981 through 1998. Our analyses clearly show that increases in funding for state tobacco control programs reduce tobacco use.

Hot-spot model for accretion disc variability as random process - II. Mathematics of the power-spectrum break frequency

We study some general properties of accretion disc variability in the context of stationary random processes. In particular, we are interested in mathematical constraints that can be imposed on the functional form of the Fourier power-spectrum density (PSD) that exhibits a multiply broken shape and several local maxima. We develop a methodology for determining the regions of the model parameter space that can in principle reproduce a PSD shape with a given number and position of local peaks and breaks of the PSD slope. Given the vast space of possible parameters, it is an important requirement that the method is fast in estimating the PSD shape for a given parameter set of the model. We generated and discuss the theoretical PSD profiles of a shot-noise-type random process with exponentially decaying flares. Then we determined conditions under which one, two, or more breaks or local maxima occur in the PSD. We calculated positions of these features and determined the changing slope of the model PSD. Furthermore, we considered the influence of the modulation by the orbital motion for a variability pattern assumed to result from an orbiting-spot model. We suggest that our general methodology can be useful in for describing non-monotonic PSD profiles (such as the trend seen, on different scales, in exemplary cases of the high-mass X-ray binary Cygnus X-1 and the narrow-line Seyfert galaxy Ark 564). We adopt a model where these power spectra are reproduced as a superposition of several Lorentzians with varying amplitudes in the X-ray-band light curve. Our general approach can help in constraining the model parameters and in determining which parts of the parameter space are accessible under various circumstances.Comment: Astronomy and Astrophysics accepte

Minocycline as a treatment for traumatic brain injury-induced impulsive and attentional deficits

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) impacts millions worldwide and can cause lasting psychiatric symptoms. Chronic neuroinflammation is a characteristic of post-injury pathology and is positively associated with psychiatric conditions such as ADHD and bipolar disorder. Therefore, the current study sought to treat TBI-induced impulsivity and inattention using minocycline, an antibiotic with anti-inflammatory properties. Rats were trained on the five-choice serial reaction time task (5CSRT), a measure of motor impulsivity and attention. After behavior was stable on the 5CSRT, rats received either a bilateral frontal TBI or sham procedure. Minocycline was given at either 1 h post-injury or beginning at 8 weeks after injury. The minocycline treatment consisted of 45mg/kg via intraperitoneal injections given every 12 h for 5 days. Behavioral testing on the 5CSRT began again after one week of recovery and continued for 12 weeks post-injury, then rats were transcardially perfused. Impulsivity and inattention were both substantially increased following TBI. Minocycline at both the early (1 h post-injury) and late (8 weeks post-injury) time points failed to affect TBI-induced impulsivity and inattention. TBI rats had increased lesion volume, but minocycline did not attenuate the lesion size. Additionally, microglia levels measured by IBA-1+ cells did not differ between TBI and sham rats, and minocycline did not differentially change the number of microglia in TBI rats. Based on the results of this study, minocycline does not appear to be an effective treatment for post-injury psychiatric-like symptoms

Signatures of X-ray reverberation in the power spectra of AGN

We compute fully relativistic disc response functions in the case of the "lamp-post" geometry using the full observed reflection spectrum for various X-ray source heights, disc inclination, and spin values of the central black hole. Since the observed PSD is equal to the product of the intrinsic power spectrum with the "transfer function" (i.e. the Fourier transform of the disc response function), we are able to predict the observed PSDs in the case of X-ray illumination of the inner disc. The observed PSD should show a prominent dip at high frequencies and an oscillatory behaviour, with a decreasing amplitude, at higher frequencies. The reverberation "echo" features should be more prominent in energy bands where the reflection component is more pronounced. The frequency of the dip is independent of energy, and it is mainly determined by the black hole mass and the X-ray source height. The amplitude of the dip increases with increasing black hole spin and inclination angle, as long as the height of the "lamp" is smaller than ~10 gravitational radii. The detection of the X-ray reverberation signals in the PSDs can provide further evidence for X-ray illumination of the inner disc in AGN. Our results are largely independent of the assumed geometry of the disc-corona system, as long as it does not change with time, and the disc response function is characterized by a sharp rise, a "plateau", and a decline at longer times. Irrespective of the geometry, the frequency of the main dip should decrease with increasing "mean time" of the response function, and the amplitude of the dip should increase with increasing reflection fraction.Comment: Astronomy and Astrophysics accepte

QPO in RE J1034+396: model constraints from observed trends

We analyze the time variability of the X-ray emission of RE J1034+396, an active galactic nucleus with the first firm detection of a quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO). Based on the results of a wavelet analysis, we find a drift in the QPO central frequency. The change inthe QPO frequency correlates with the change in the X-ray flux with a short time delay. Linear structures such as shocks, spiral waves, orvery distant flares seem to be a favored explanation for this particular QPO event.Comment: to appear in the proceedings to "The Central Kiloparsec in Galactic Nuclei (AHAR2011)", Journal of Physics: Conference Series (JPCS), IOP Publishin

Trap-Assisted Tunneling in the Schottky Barrier

    Get PDF
The paper presents a new way how to calculate the currents in a Schottky barrier. The novel phenomeno-logical model extends the Shockley-Read-Hall recombi-nation-generation theory of trap-assisted tunneling. The proposed approach explains the occurrence of large leakage currents in Schottky structures on wide band semi-conductors with a high Schottky barrier (above 1 eV) and with a high density of traps. Under certain conditions, trap-assisted tunneling (TAT) plays a more important role than direct tunneling
