    On Unconstrained SU(2) Gluodynamics with Theta Angle

    The Hamiltonian reduction of classical SU(2) Yang-Mills field theory to the equivalent unconstrained theory of gauge invariant local dynamical variables is generalized to the case of nonvanishing theta angle. It is shown that for any theta angle the elimination of the pure gauge degrees of freedom leads to a corresponding unconstrained nonlocal theory of self-interacting second rank symmetric tensor fields, and that the obtained classical unconstrained gluodynamics with different theta angles are canonically equivalent as on the original constrained level.Comment: 13 pages Revtex, no figures; several misprints corrected; version to appear in Eur.     Rapid Bursts of \u3ci\u3eAndrogen-Binding Protein (Abp)\u3c/i\u3e Gene Duplication Occurred Independently in Diverse Mammals

    Background The draft mouse (Mus musculus) genome sequence revealed an unexpected proliferation of gene duplicates encoding a family of secretoglobin proteins including the androgen-binding protein (ABP) α, β and γ subunits. Further investigation of 14 α-like (Abpa) and 13 β- or γ-like (Abpbg) undisrupted gene sequences revealed a rich diversity of developmental stage-, sex- and tissue-specific expression. Despite these studies, our understanding of the evolution of this gene family remains incomplete. Questions arise from imperfections in the initial mouse genome assembly and a dearth of information about the gene family structure in other rodents and mammals. Results Here, we interrogate the latest \u27finished\u27 mouse (Mus musculus) genome sequence assembly to show that the Abp gene repertoire is, in fact, twice as large as reported previously, with 30 Abpa and 34 Abpbg genes and pseudogenes. All of these have arisen since the last common ancestor with rat (Rattus norvegicus). We then demonstrate, by sequencing homologs from species within the Mus genus, that this burst of gene duplication occurred very recently, within the past seven million years. Finally, we survey Abp orthologs in genomes from across the mammalian clade and show that bursts of Abp gene duplications are not specific to the murid rodents; they also occurred recently in the lagomorph (rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus) and ruminant (cattle, Bos taurus) lineages, although not in other mammalian taxa. Conclusion We conclude that Abp genes have undergone repeated bursts of gene duplication and adaptive sequence diversification driven by these genes\u27 participation in chemosensation and/or sexual identification

    Sub-wavelength imaging at infrared frequencies using an array of metallic nanorods

    We demonstrate that an array of metallic nanorods enables sub-wavelength (near-field) imaging at infrared frequencies. Using an homogenization approach, it is theoretically proved that under certain conditions the incoming radiation can be transmitted by the array of nanorods over a significant distance with fairly low attenuation. The propagation mechanism does not involve a resonance of material parameters and thus the resolution is not strongly affected by material losses and has wide bandwidth. The sub-wavelength imaging with λ/10\lambda/10 resolution by silver rods at 30 THz is demonstrated numerically using full-wave electromagnetic simulator.Comment: 12 pages, 16 figures, submitted to PR

    Convergence of resonances on thin branched quantum wave guides

    We prove an abstract criterion stating resolvent convergence in the case of operators acting in different Hilbert spaces. This result is then applied to the case of Laplacians on a family X_\eps of branched quantum waveguides. Combining it with an exterior complex scaling we show, in particular, that the resonances on X_\eps approximate those of the Laplacian with ``free'' boundary conditions on X0X_0, the skeleton graph of X_\eps.Comment: 48 pages, 1 figur

    Interminiband Rabi oscillations in biased semiconductor superlattices

    Carrier dynamics at energy level anticrossings in biased semiconductor superlattices, was studied in the time domain by solving the time-dependent Schroedinger equation. The resonant nature of interminiband Rabi oscillations has been explicitly demonstrated to arise from interference of intrawell and Bloch oscillations. We also report a simulation of direct Rabi oscillations across three minibands, in the high field regime, due to interaction between three strongly coupled minibands.Comment: 13 pages, 16 figure

    Pilot Model Development and Human Manual Control Considerations for Helicopter Hover Displays

    Head-down hover displays and instrument panels theoretically provide all necessary 2ight data information to control low-speed helicopter manoeuvring. However, past experiments have shown that head-down displays can incur high workload, control instability, and even loss of control when used as the sole 2ight data source. This paper investigates the reasons for this instability incurred by replacing good outside visuals with a head-down hover display and an instrument panel. A pilot model based on crossover theory is developed for a linear six-degree-of-freedom Bo. helicopter model. Utilising a target trajectory based on-theory and assuming perfect information availability, the developed model can perform the required manoeuvring task with a control time-delay stability margin of . s (with SAS) or . s (without SAS). Then, the actual information availability based on human perception methods and limitations is discussed. A pilot-in-the-loop experiment in the SIMONA Research Simulator qualitatively validates the developed pilot model for good outside visuals. However, the pilot model does not capture the added diZculties of having to utilise the hover display and instrument panel instead of good outside visuals; during the experiment, the task was impossible to complete with only these displays. This is likely caused by an increase in control time-delay, which in turn is caused by the loss of peripheral and flow 1eld information, a more abstract information representation compared to good outside visuals, and the fact that the pilot now needs to scan multiple displays to acquire all necessary 2ight state information. Improving head-down hover display symbology and scaling factors might rectify some, but probably not all of these effects.Control & Simulatio
