The worldwide costs of marine protected areas

    Get PDF
Declines in marine harvests, wildlife, and habitats have prompted calls at both the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development and the 2003 World Parks Congress for the establishment of a global system of marine protected areas (MPAs). MPAs that restrict fishing and other human activities conserve habitats and populations and, by exporting biomass, may sustain or increase yields of nearby fisheries. Here we provide an estimate of the costs of a global MPA network, based on a survey of the running costs of 83 MPAs worldwide. Annual running costs per unit area spanned six orders of magnitude, and were higher in MPAs that were smaller, closer to coasts, and in high-cost, developed countries. Models extrapolating these findings suggest that a global MPA network meeting the World Parks Congress target of conserving 20–30% of the world’s seas might cost between 5billionand5 billion and 19 billion annually to run and would probably create around one million jobs. Although substantial, gross network costs are less than current government expenditures on harmful subsidies to industrial fisheries. They also ignore potential private gains from improved fisheries and tourism and are dwarfed by likely social gains from increasing the sustainability of fisheries and securing vital ecosystem services

Length-dependent conductance and thermopower in single-molecule junctions of dithiolated oligophenylene derivatives

We study theoretically the length dependence of both conductance and thermopower in metal-molecule-metal junctions made up of dithiolated oligophenylenes contacted to gold electrodes. We find that while the conductance decays exponentially with increasing molecular length, the thermopower increases linearly as suggested by recent experiments. We also analyze how these transport properties can be tuned with methyl side groups. Our results can be explained by considering the level shifts due to their electron-donating character as well as the tilt-angle dependence of conductance and thermopower. Qualitative features of the substituent effects in our density-functional calculations are explained using a tight-binding model. In addition, we observe symmetry-related even-odd transmission channel degeneracies as a function of molecular length.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev.

Experiences of aiding autobiographical memory using the sensecam

Human memory is a dynamic system that makes accessible certain memories of events based on a hierarchy of information, arguably driven by personal significance. Not all events are remembered, but those that are tend to be more psychologically relevant. In contrast, lifelogging is the process of automatically recording aspects of one's life in digital form without loss of information. In this article we share our experiences in designing computer-based solutions to assist people review their visual lifelogs and address this contrast. The technical basis for our work is automatically segmenting visual lifelogs into events, allowing event similarity and event importance to be computed, ideas that are motivated by cognitive science considerations of how human memory works and can be assisted. Our work has been based on visual lifelogs gathered by dozens of people, some of them with collections spanning multiple years. In this review article we summarize a series of studies that have led to the development of a browser that is based on human memory systems and discuss the inherent tension in storing large amounts of data but making the most relevant material the most accessible

Nanotrench for nano and microparticle electrical interconnects

We present a simple and versatile patterning procedure for the reliable and reproducible fabrication of high aspect ratio (10 4 ) electrical interconnects that have separation distances down to 20 nm and lengths of several hundreds of microns. The process uses standard optical lithography techniques and allows parallel processing of many junctions, making it easily scalable and industrially relevant. We demonstrate the suitability of these nanotrenches as electrical interconnects for addressing micro and nanoparticles by realizing several circuits with integrated species. Furthermore, low impedance metal-metal low contacts are shown to be obtained when trapping a single metal-coated microsphere in the gap, emphasizing the intrinsic good electrical conductivity of the interconnects, even though a wet process is used. Highly resistive magnetite-based nanoparticles networks also demonstrate the advantage of the high aspect ratio of the nanotrenches for providing access to electrical properties of highly resistive materials, with leakage current levels below 1 pA. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd

Grounding power on actions and mental attitudes

International audienceThe main objective of this work is to develop a logic called IAL (Intentional Agency Logic) in which we can reason about mental states of agents, action occurrences, and agentive and group powers. IAL will be exploited for a formal analysis of different forms of power such as an agent i's power of achieving a certain result and an agent i's power over another agent j (alias social power)

Tilt-angle landscapes and temperature dependence of the conductance in biphenyl-dithiol single-molecule junctions

Using a density-functional-based transport method we study the conduction properties of several biphenyl-derived dithiol (BPDDT) molecules wired to gold electrodes. The BPDDT molecules differ in their side groups, which control the degree of conjugation of the pi-electron system. We have analyzed the dependence of the low-bias zero-temperature conductance on the tilt angle phi between the two phenyl ring units, and find that it follows closely a cos^2(phi) law, as expected from an effective pi-orbital coupling model. We show that the tilting of the phenyl rings results in a decrease of the zero-temperature conductance by roughly two orders of magnitude, when going from a planar conformation to a configuration in which the rings are perpendicular. In addition we demonstrate that the side groups, apart from determining phi, have no influence on the conductance. All this is in agreement with the recent experiment by Venkataraman et al. [Nature 442, 904 (2006)]. Finally, we study the temperature dependence of both the conductance and its fluctuations and find qualitative differences between the examined molecules. In this analysis we consider two contributions to the temperature behavior, one coming from the Fermi functions and the other one from a thermal average over different contact configurations. We illustrate that the fluctuations of the conductance due to temperature-induced changes in the geometric structure of the molecule can be reduced by an appropriate design.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures; submitted to Phys. Function and quality of life following medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty in patients 60years of age or younger

SummaryIntroductionUKA is an appropriate bone-sparing solution for focal advanced knee osteoarthritis in young patients. As the expectations of patients younger than 60 years of age are different from those in an older population, we aimed to evaluate quality of life and the quality of sports activity after UKA in this population.Patients and methodsSixty-five UKAs in 62 patients younger than 60 (mean age: 54.7 years; mean BMI: 28kg/m2) performed between 1989 and 2006 were included. At last follow-up (minimum 2 years), before the objective evaluation, patients were asked to fill in a KOOS questionnaire and a specific sports questionnaire including the UCLA score and questions from the Mohtadi score.ResultsWith a mean follow-up of 11.2±5 years (range, 2–19 years), the KOOS score was higher than 75 points in 90% of the patients for the quality-of-life categories but also for the score's four other categories: 83.4% of the patients had resumed their sports activities and the mean UCLA score was 6.8 (range, 4–9); 90% of the patients reported no or slight limitation during sports activities. The function KSS improved from 52±4 to 95±3 points postoperatively and the Knee KSS from 50±4 to 94±4 points. With three patients undergoing revision for an isolated insert exchange, one for septic loosening and three for osteoarthritis in the external compartment, the 12-year Kaplan-Meier survivorship was 94%.Discussion and conclusionThese results confirmed that UKA can provide good patient-rated outcomes, which is very important in this demanding population. As for TKA, wear remains a problem in this active population.Level of evidenceTherapeutic study, level IV

Cluster-based density-functional approach to quantum transport through molecular and atomic contacts

    Get PDF
We present a cluster-based density-functional approach to model charge transport through molecular and atomic contacts. The electronic structure of the contacts is determined in the framework of density functional theory, and the parameters needed to describe transport are extracted from finite clusters. A similar procedure, restricted to nearest-neighbor interactions in the electrodes, has been presented by Damle et al. [Chem. Phys. 281, 171 (2002)]. Here, we show how to systematically improve the description of the electrodes by extracting bulk parameters from sufficiently large metal clusters. In this way we avoid problems arising from the use of nonorthogonal basis functions. For demonstration we apply our method to electron transport through Au contacts with various atomic-chain configurations and to a single-atom contact of Al.Comment: 18 pages, 13 figure
