    Mean-field analysis of the majority-vote model broken-ergodicity steady state

    We study analytically a variant of the one-dimensional majority-vote model in which the individual retains its opinion in case there is a tie among the neighbors' opinions. The individuals are fixed in the sites of a ring of size LL and can interact with their nearest neighbors only. The interesting feature of this model is that it exhibits an infinity of spatially heterogeneous absorbing configurations for L→∞L \to \infty whose statistical properties we probe analytically using a mean-field framework based on the decomposition of the LL-site joint probability distribution into the nn-contiguous-site joint distributions, the so-called nn-site approximation. To describe the broken-ergodicity steady state of the model we solve analytically the mean-field dynamic equations for arbitrary time tt in the cases n=3 and 4. The asymptotic limit t→∞t \to \infty reveals the mapping between the statistical properties of the random initial configurations and those of the final absorbing configurations. For the pair approximation (n=2n=2) we derive that mapping using a trick that avoids solving the full dynamics. Most remarkably, we find that the predictions of the 4-site approximation reduce to those of the 3-site in the case of expectations involving three contiguous sites. In addition, those expectations fit the Monte Carlo data perfectly and so we conjecture that they are in fact the exact expectations for the one-dimensional majority-vote model

    Remote Experimentation is an educational resource that allows teachers to strengthen the practical contents of science & engineering courses. However, building up the interfaces to remote experiments is not a trivial task. Although teachers normally master the practical contents addressed by a particular remote experiment they usually lack the programming skills required to quickly build up the corresponding web interface. This paper describes the automatic generation of experiment interfaces through a web-accessible Java application. The application displays a list of existent modules and once the requested modules have been selected, it generates the code that enables the browser to display the experiment interface. The tools main advantage is enabling non-tech teachers to create their own remote experiments

    Lepton Flavor Violation and Collider Searches in a Type I + II Seesaw Model

    Neutrino are massless in the Standard Model. The most popular mechanism to generate neutrino masses are the type I and type II seesaw, where right-handed neutrinos and a scalar triplet are augmented to the Standard Model, respectively. In this work, we discuss a model where a type I + II seesaw mechanism naturally arises via spontaneous symmetry breaking of an enlarged gauge group. Lepton flavor violation is a common feature in such setup and for this reason, we compute the model contribution to the μ→eγ\mu \rightarrow e\gamma and μ→3e\mu \rightarrow 3e decays. Moreover, we explore the connection between the neutrino mass ordering and lepton flavor violation in perspective with the LHC, HL-LHC and HE-LHC sensitivities to the doubly charged scalar stemming from the Higgs triplet. Our results explicitly show the importance of searching for signs of lepton flavor violation in collider and muon decays. The conclusion about which probe yields stronger bounds depends strongly on the mass ordering adopted, the absolute neutrino masses and which much decay one considers. In the 1-5 TeV mass region of the doubly charged scalar, lepton flavor violation experiments and colliders offer orthogonal and complementary probes. Thus if a signal is observed in one of the two new physics searches, the other will be able to assess whether it stems from a seesaw framework.Comment: 41 pages, 1 figure, 2 table

    Are perceived benefits of heated tobacco products consumption aiding smoking cessation?

    Background: The tobacco industry has been facing several transformations, considering that technology has evolved and health concerns have increased. One way for this industry to meet the growing social and health concerns is to provide alternative solutions. Heated tobacco products (HTPs) were the solution found, but they nevertheless pose several challenges to regulators, companies, and consumers, since HTPs are advertised as a less harmful alternative to conventional cigarettes. Focus of the Article: This study aims to analyze smokers' perception of HTPs to provide insights for social marketing campaigns targeting behavioral change. Research questions: The main objectives of this research are: (1) to assess whether smokers and ex-smokers view HTPs as less harmful to health than traditional cigarettes; and (2) to determine to what extent HTPs can help increase the intention to quit smoking. Methods: This study explores smokers’ perception of HTPs consumption using a modified version of the Health Belief Model (HBM). A survey study involving 250 smokers and ex-smokers was conducted to test the conceptual model using PLS-Path modeling to validate the research hypotheses. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 27 and SmartPLS 3.3 programs. Results: The results suggest that the perceived benefits of heated tobacco consumption negatively influence the likelihood of quitting smoking. Therefore, HTPs do not work as auxiliary products with regard to the intention to quit smoking. In some cases, the effect is quite the opposite, as HTPs use increases tobacco consumption and dependence. Perceived susceptibility and perceived severity are not significant predictors of the decision to quit smoking. Research limitations: Future research could use a sample that includes only HTPs smokers and ex-smokers, analyze HTPs benefits and understand the primary motivation behind replacing conventional cigarettes with HTPs. Practical implications: Entities attempting to promote the reduction of tobacco consumption should equate HTPs to conventional tobacco and focus on campaigns targeting only HTPs smokers. Whenever studying perceptions on HTPs, it is important to consider smokers’ dependence on nicotine and the particularities of the devices used to consume HTPs.     Transcriptomic analysis of plasmid and plasmid-related chromosomal ORFs in C. trachomatis strains with different cell-appetence

    Despite the undergoing chromosomal size-reduction of Chlamydia trachomatis, almost all strains maintain the conserved 7,5kb plasmid. It has been recently considered a virulence factor, as plasmid-bearing strains evidenced a higher ability to successfully colonize epithelial cells and sustain infection than plasmidless strains. However, the biological role of the eight plasmid ORFs remains poorly characterized. Thus, we aim to correlate the relative expression of each plasmid ORFs with the number of plasmids per genome as well as with the relative expression of chromosomal genes that seem to be regulated by the plasmid, during the whole Chlamydia developmental cycle. Both the transcriptomic analysis of all the selected ORFs and the determination of the plasmid copy number were performed by qPCR in prototype and currently circulating strains with distinct cell-appetence and ecological success, throughout Chlamydia developmental cycle. So far, our results indicate: 1) huge differences (up to 100-fold) in the expression levels between plasmid ORFs; 2) for the same ORF, different expression levels and profiles among strains; 3) variation in the number of plasmids per genome during the infectious cycle; 4) the higher expression level of the plasmid ORFs do not seem to correlate with a higher number of plasmids per genome. These results, together with our ongoing transcriptomic survey of the plasmid-related chromosomal genes, will contribute to shed some light on the molecular function of the plasmid ORFs in chlamydial biology

    Molecular features underlying the higher ecological success of C. trachomatis E and F genotypes

    In the light of the >98% genomic similarity among Chlamydia trachomatis serovars, the higher worldwide ecological success of E and F is enigmatic. We intend to provide a quick overview of the molecular data that distinguish these from the remaining strains. Examples are: - E and F possess a similar chromosomal genetic make-up distinct from the remaining genotypes. Some loci linked to this independent co-segregation comprehend membrane proteins, hypothetical virulence factors, and regulatory regions (published data). - Some loci reveal nonrandom mutational patterns, where mutations exclusive of E and F are clustered in specific protein domains, likely promoting strains functional and/or structural attributes (published data). - Based on data from a worldwide survey, MOMP of E and F exhibit the lowest mutation rate (22.3-fold lower), implying more fitted antigenic profiles to deal with host immunity (published data). - The likelihood of E and F strains to undergo genetic recombination is about 12-fold lower than that of the other genotypes (P<10-2), suggesting a putative clonal evolution, where superimposed favorable clones may be strongly maintained in vivo (preliminary data from our lab). - Strains E and F do not seem to originate higher infectious load in vivo, when compared with other genital genotypes (published data). Full-genomic data from multiple and diverse clinical isolates will be essential to decipher the secret behind the higher ecological success of E and F strains

    Aplicação de laminados de fibras de carbono no reforço de pilares de betão armado

    Um número elevado de edifícios de betão armado construídos até ao início da década de 80 foram projectados sem atender ao efeito das acções horizontais. Por este motivo, a ocorrência de acções sísmicas poderá introduzir nessas estruturas danos de intensidade elevada. Os pilares são os elementos que merecem especial atenção, dado que o seu colapso conduz, geralmente, à rotura global da estrutura. Com o objectivo de desenvolver técnicas que permitam reforçar pilares, de maneira mais eficaz e mais económica que as técnicas convencionais, foi efectuado um conjunto de ensaios cíclicos envolvendo a aplicação de laminados de fibras de carbono no reforço à flexão dos referidos elementos estruturais. O reforço é constituído por laminados de fibras de carbono com 9.5×1.5 mm2 de secção transversal embutidos no betão de recobrimento recorrendo à utilização de ligantes epóxidos. Foram reforçados e ensaiados elementos de pilar intactos e elementos de pilar pré-danificados. Os resultados dos ensaios são apresentados e discutidos no presente trabalho
