Normal subgroups of diffeomorphism and homeomorphism groups of R^n and other open manifolds
We determine all the normal subgroups of the group of C^r diffeomorphisms of
R^n, r = 1,2,...,infinity, except when r=n+1 or n=4, and also of the group of
homeomorphisms of R^n (r=0). We also study the group A_0 of diffeomorphisms of
an open manifold M that are isotopic to the identity. If M is the interior of a
compact manifold with nonempty boundary, then the quotient of A_0 by the normal
subgroup of diffeomorphisms that coincide with the identity near to a given end
e of M is simple.Comment: This version corrects an error regarding the diffeomorphism groups of
R^1, since the line has two ends, in contrast to higher dimension
Clinical Presentation Non-CME: Hyperbaric Oxygen, Laser Photodynamic Therapies and Mitochondrial Support
In the multiple therapies which may synergize HBOT the use of Laser (photodynamic) therapy is not well known in North America. In this session Dr. Anderson will outline his use of HBOT-Laser and IV Therapies to enhance mitochondrial function and healing. Mechanisms of action and common complementary modalities will be discussed
Factors Socially Relevant to Agricultural College Enrollment Rates: (A Study in the Social Foundations of Career Decisions)
While a considerable literature has accumulated on career development, most of it, as can be expected, has been produced by persons with counseling, psychological or labor market orientations. Hence, little in the current literature applies directly to a sociological conception of careers. Three recently published works in divergent ways sum up the field: The Sociology of Work, by Theodore Caplow (1954) The Organization Man, by William Whyte (1957) and Men and their Work by Everett Hughes (1958). While these works contain valuable insights, all of them focus primarily on activities which are the consequences of careers and career decisions without inquiring into the relation between career lines and other aspects of social behavior. There is thus a kind of vacuum in career study.
However, one of the classics of early sociology, Thomas\u27 and Znaniecki\u27s The Polish Peasant (1919) suggested a theoretical approach with great promise for the study of this aspect of careers. Two ideas, essentially corollaries, form the core of the theoretical argument: the idea that a man\u27s life may be subject to typical lines of genesis and the idea that an individual may develop life organization . Lines of genesis refer to social channeling of personality formation. Life organization is the resulting total structure of personal history.
Roles, into which personal histories are often analyzed since Mead (1934), may be viewed as the subunits of lines of genesis and life organizations. Career study in this view becomes the examination of the clustering of roles, past, present and future, each having particular ordering or limiting effects upon subsequent roles in the series
INTERNATIONAL LAW-LEGAL CAPACITY OF THE UNITED NATIONS-ASSERTION OF CLAIM IN BEHALF OF ITS AGENTS
In a decision handed down April 11, 1949, the court unanimously answered question I(a) (Can the United Nations sue for damages done to itself?) affirmatively. Question I(b) (Can the United Nations sue for damages done to its agents?) was also answered in the affirmative, but over the dissent of four judges. On question II, the majority of the court asserted that a conflict between the agent\u27s national state and the United Nations would be avoided because the United Nations would be claiming only for breach of the obligation due to it
TAX STATUTES-THE ROLE OF STARE DECISIS IN DETERMINING LEGISLATIVE INTENT
An interesting case history recently unfolded by the Supreme Court reveals a novel application of stare decisis to decisions which interpret an act of Congress. The peregrinations of the Court have caused Congress to intervene on two occasions to settle the questions opened by the Court-although on the second occurrence the Court construed the act precisely as had Congress when it decried the Court\u27s first interpretation. This imbroglio issued from the Revenue Act of 1918 under which Congress provided that transfers intended to take effect in possession or enjoyment at or after his death should be included in the donor\u27s gross estate for purposes of the Federal Estate Tax
Sonic Bust: Trying to Retain Major League Franchises in Challenging Financial Times
This article analyzes the relationship between a city and team. It uses the litigation surrounding the Seattle Sonics move to Oklahoma City to show how the relationship can break down. The authors then argue that judicial remedies will often be inadequate unless substantiated with strong lease language
Self-force on a scalar charge in radial infall from rest using the Hadamard-WKB expansion
We present an analytic method based on the Hadamard-WKB expansion to
calculate the self-force for a particle with scalar charge that undergoes
radial infall in a Schwarzschild spacetime after being held at rest until a
time t = 0. Our result is valid in the case of short duration from the start.
It is possible to use the Hadamard-WKB expansion in this case because the value
of the integral of the retarded Green's function over the particle's entire
past trajectory can be expressed in terms of two integrals over the time period
that the particle has been falling. This analytic result is expected to be
useful as a check for numerical prescriptions including those involving mode
sum regularization and for any other analytical approximations to self-force
calculations.Comment: 22 pages, 2 figures, Physical Review D version along with the
