Interaction of Nucleosides and Related Compounds with Nucleic Acids as Indicated by the Change of Helix-Coil Transition Temperature
A series of compounds has been tested for effectiveness in lowering the melting temperature of poly A and of thymus DNA. The order of increasing activity was found to be: adonitol, methyl riboside (both negligible) < cyclohexanol < phenol, pyrimidine, uridine < cytidine, thymidine < purine, adenosine, inosine, deoxyguanosine < caffeine, coumarin, 2,6-dichloro-7-methylpurine. Urea was ineffective with poly A and only slightly effective with DNA. At a concentration of 0.3 M, purine lowered the Tm of DNA about 9°
A double peaked pulse profile observed in GX 1+4
The hard X-ray pulsar GX 1+4 was observed several times in the last few years
with a pair of balloon-borne Xenon filled Multi-cell Proportional Counters
(XMPC). In a balloon flight made on 22 March 1995, the source was detected in a
bright state, the average observed source count rate being per
detector. X-ray pulsations with a period of s were detected in
the source with a broad double peak pulse feature. When observed in December
1993 with the same instrument, the pulse profile of GX 1+4 showed a single
peak. This change in the pulse profile to a double pulse structure in about 15
months indicates either activation of the opposite pole of the neutron star if
the magnetic field is asymmetric or possibly a change in the beam pattern, from
a pencil beam to a fan beam. Assuming a fan beam configuration, the pulse
profile is used to find the inclinations of the magnetic axis and the viewing
axis with the spin axis. The derived angles support the GINGA observations of a
dip in the pulse profile which was resolved to have a local maximum in one of
the observations and was explained with resonance scattering of cyclotron line
energy photons by the accretion column (Makishima et al., \markcite{maki1988},
Dotani et al., \markcite{dotani1989}.). Compared to our previous observation of
the same source with the same telescope (Rao et al., \markcite{rao1994}) a
period change rate of is obtained which is the lowest rate
of change of period for this source since its discovery. Average pulse fraction
in the hard X-ray range is low (30%), consistent with its anti correlation with
luminosity as reported by us earlier (Rao et al., \markcite{rao1994}) and the

An extension theorem for conformal gauge singularities
We analyse conformal gauge, or isotropic, singularities in cosmological
models in general relativity. Using the calculus of tractors, we find
conditions in terms of tractor curvature for a local extension of the conformal
structure through a cosmological singularity and prove a local extension

Different types of X-ray bursts from GRS 1915+105 and their origin
We report the X-ray observations of the Galactic X-ray transient source GRS
1915+105 with the PPCs of the Indian X-ray Astronomy Experiment(IXAE) onboard
the Indian satellite IRS-P3 during 1997 June - August, which have revealed the
presence of four types of intense X-ray bursts. All the observed bursts have a
slow exponential rise, a sharp linear decay, and they can broadly be put in two
classes: irregular and quasi-regular bursts in one class, and regular bursts in
another class. The regular bursts are found to have two distinct time scales
and they persist over extended durations. There is a strong correlation between
the preceding quiescent time and the burst duration for the quasi-regular and
irregular bursts. No such correlation is found for the regular bursts. The
ratio of average flux during the burst time to the average flux during the
quiescent phase is high and variable for the quasi- regular and irregular
bursts while it is low and constant for the regular bursts. We suggest that the
peculiar bursts that we have seen are charact- eristic of the change of state
of the source. The source can switch back and forth between the low-hard state
and the high-soft state near critical accretion rates in a very short time
scale. A test of the model is presented using the publicly available 13-60 keV
RXTE/PCA data for irregular and regular bursts concurrent with our

Cyclic peptides- small and big and their conformational aspects
Cyclic peptides form an interesting class of compounds for study by conformational analysis, by virtue of their unique conformational features and biological properties. The small cyclic peptides having 3-6 peptide units in their ring, show a variety of conformational characteristics such as occurrence ofcis peptide units, flexibility of peptide dimension and variety in hydrogen bonding. The different possible conformations of cyclic tri- and hexa-peptides are given and certain specific conformational features are discussed for cyclic tetra and pentapeptides. For higher cyclic peptides, the hydrogen bonding requirement for stability of the backbone of the ring, is seen to be kept to a minimum. These various features and their significance are examined and discussed in the light of energy minimization studies and analysis of available experimental data
Field Dependence of the Superconducting Basal Plane Anisotropy of TmNi2B2C
The superconductor TmNi2B2C possesses a significant four-fold basal plane
anisotropy, leading to a square Vortex Lattice (VL) at intermediate fields.
However, unlike other members of the borocarbide superconductors, the
anisotropy in TmNi2B2C appears to decrease with increasing field, evident by a
reentrance of the square VL phase. We have used Small Angle Neutron Scattering
measurements of the VL to study the field dependence of the anisotropy. Our
results provide a direct, quantitative measurement of the decreasing
anisotropy. We attribute this reduction of the basal plane anisotropy to the
strong Pauli paramagnetic effects observed in TmNi2B2C and the resulting

Self-dual Maxwell Chern-Simons Solitons In 1+1 Dimensions
We study the domain wall soliton solutions in the relativistic self-dual
Maxwell Chern-Simons model in 1+1 dimensions obtained by the dimensional
reduction of the 2+1 model. Both topological and nontopological self-dual
solutions are found in this case. A la BPS dyons here the Bogomol'ny bound on
the energy is expressed in terms of two conserved quantities. We discuss the
underlying supersymmetry. Nonrelativistic limit of this model is also
considered and static, nonrelativistic self-dual soliton solutions are
