    K-theory for group C*-algebras

    No full text
These notes are based on a lecture course given by the first author in the Sedano Winter School on K-theory held in Sedano, Spain, on January 22-27th of 2007. They aim at introducing K-theory of C*-algebras, equivariant K-homology and KK-theory in the context of the Baum-Connes conjectur

Preparing Tomorrow’s World Language Teacher Today: The Case for Seamless Induction

    Get PDF
This essay is a call to action. It offers a comprehensive overview of the challenges facing world language (WL) teacher educators and their employers, the K-12 schools, during the teacher induction period. We propose a new paradigm for WL teacher education based on national accreditation standards, best-practice pedagogy, insights from the professional literature on methods education, and the enhanced role of the methods instructor/supervisor. In order to become successful in the classroom, the pre-service educator undergoes a seamless period of induction that is student-centered and college/university-supported beyond the classroom arena

Fine-tuning a context-aware system application by using user-centred design methods

Context-Aware Systems in the home environment can provide an effective solution for supporting wellbeing and autonomy for the elderly. The definition and implementation of the system architecture for a particular assisted living healthcare application entail both technological and usability challenges. If issues regarding users’ concerns and desires are taken into account in the early stages of the system development users can benefit substantially more from this technology. In this paper, we describe our initial experiences with different user-centred design methods, as they are applied in the process of fine-tuning a context-aware system architecture to improve quality of life for elderly THR patients (Total Hip Replacement). The insights resulting from this approach result in a clearer functional specification towards a better fit with the user needs regarding information need of the patient as well as the physiotherapist. Important system requirements as timing and content of the feedback are much more fruitful in an earlier phase of the development process. User-centred design methods help to better understand the needed functional features of a context-aware system, thereby saving time and helping developers to improve adoption of the system by the users

Observations of the X-ray Nova GRO~J0422+32: II: Optical Spectra Approaching Quiescence

We present results obtained from a series of 5~\AA\ resolution spectra of the X-ray Nova GRO~J0422+32 obtained in 1993~October, when the system was approximately 2 magnitudes above quiescence, with R∼19{\rm R \sim 19}. The data were obtained in an effort to measure the orbital radial velocity curve of the secondary, but detection of the narrow photospheric absorption lines needed to do this proved elusive. Instead we found wide absorption bands reminiscent of M~star photospheric features. The parameters determined by fitting accretion disk line profiles (Smak profiles) to the Hα\alpha line are similar to those found in several strong black-hole candidates. Measurements of the velocity of the Hα\alpha line are consistent with an orbital period of 5.1~hours and a velocity semi-amplitude of the primary of 34±634 \pm 6~\kms. These measurements, when combined with measurements of the velocity semi-amplitude of the secondary made by others, indicate that the mass ratio q∼0.09q \sim 0.09. If the secondary follows the empirical mass-radius relation found for CVs, the low qq implies a primary mass of Mx∼5.6M_x \sim 5.6\mo, and a rather low (face-on) inclination. The Hα\alpha EW is found to be modulated on the orbital period with a phasing that implies a partial eclipse of the disk by the secondary, but simultaneous R~band photometry shows no evidence for such an eclipse.Comment: Accepted for ApJ, plain latex, 5 figures available as self-extracting uuendoced, compressed, tarfiles (from uufiles
