    And They Danced

(Excerpt) PERFORMANCE NOTES: And They Danced is designed to be played in a chancel: a very compact space. Most chancels feature several steps leading from the floor of the nave and landing on the high altar level. The staging suggested in this script depends on such steps. For example, at the opening, the players are arranged in a symmetrical grouping on at least three levels. On the top level, three men are arranged as follows: SIX in the middle, FOUR to his right, and FIVE to his left. Two of the women are on the step below: TWO stage right (in front of FOUR) and 1HREE stage left (in front of FIVE). ESTHER (ONE) is down center, a step or two in front of the group. Six simple folding chairs are arranged on three sides of the chancel area

New Detectors to Explore the Lifetime Frontier

Long-lived particles (LLPs) are a common feature in many beyond the Standard Model theories, including supersymmetry, and are generically produced in exotic Higgs decays. Unfortunately, no existing or proposed search strategy will be able to observe the decay of non-hadronic electrically neutral LLPs with masses above \sim GeV and lifetimes near the limit set by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), cτ107108c \tau \lesssim 10^7 - 10^8~m. We propose the MATHUSLA surface detector concept (MAssive Timing Hodoscope for Ultra Stable neutraL pArticles), which can be implemented with existing technology and in time for the high luminosity LHC upgrade to find such ultra-long-lived particles (ULLPs), whether produced in exotic Higgs decays or more general production modes. We also advocate for a dedicated LLP detector at a future 100 TeV collider, where a modestly sized underground design can discover ULLPs with lifetimes at the BBN limit produced in sub-percent level exotic Higgs decays.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Added more detail to discussion of backgrounds. Various minor clarifications. Results and conclusions unchange

Modified confidence intervals for the Mahalanobis distance

Reiser (2001) proposes a method of forming confidence interval for a Mahalanobis distance that yields intervals which have exactly the nominal coverage, but sometimes the interval is View the MathML source (0,0). We consider the case where Mahalanobis distance quantifies the difference between an individual and a population mean, and suggest a modification that avoids implausible intervals

Molecular cloning and characterization of a new member of the gap junction gene family, connexin-31

A new member of the connexin gene family has been identified and designated rat connexin-31 (Cx31) based on its predicted molecular mass of 30,960 daltons. Cx31 is 270 amino acids long and is coded for by a single copy gene. It is expressed as a 1.7-kilobase mRNA that is detected in placenta, Harderian gland, skin, and eye. Cx31 is highly conserved and can be detected in species as distantly related to rat as Xenopus laevis. It exhibits extensive sequence similarity to the previously identified connexins, 58, 50, and 40% amino acid identity to Cx26, Cx32, and Cx43, respectively. When conservation of predicted phosphorylation sites is used to adjust the alignment of Cx31 to other connexins, a unique alignment of three predicted protein kinase C phosphorylation sites near the carboxyl terminus of Cx31 with three sites at the carboxyl terminus of Cx43 is revealed

This casenote discusses the statutes and cases bearing on the Second Circuit\u27s decision of Catskill Mountains Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Inc. v. City of New York. It begins with an examination of Catskill to determine its reliability as authority for subsequent cases. Specifically, this casenote discusses the, statutes and cases laying the foundation of the Catskill decision, addressing the law of judicial deference to administrative interpretation, and the meaning of discharge of pollutants under the Clean Water Act. This casenote concludes that Catskill is both sound authority and a fair summary of the law at the time of its decision. The casenote ends with a summary of the outcome of the Catskill litigation and recent developments in a similar case in the Eleventh Circuit, which may affect Catskill\u27s viability
