Coupling groundwater and riparian vegetation models to assess effects of reservoir releases
Although riparian areas in the arid southwestern United States are critical for maintaining species diversity, their extent and health have been declining since Euro-American settlement. The purpose of this study was to develop a methodology to evaluate the potential for riparian vegetation restoration and groundwater recharge. A numerical groundwater flow model was coupled with a conceptual riparian vegetation model to predict hydrologic conditions favorable to maintaining riparian vegetation downstream of a reservoir. A Geographic Information System(GIS) was used for this one-way coupling. Constant and seasonally varying releases from the dam were simulated using volumes anticipated to be permitted by a regional water supplier. Simulations indicated that seasonally variable releases would produce surface flow 5.4-8.5 km below the dam in a previously dry reach. Using depth to groundwater simulations from the numerical flow model with conceptual models of depths to water necessary for maintenance of riparian vegetation, the GIS analysis predicted a 5- to 6.5-fold increase in the area capable of
sustaining riparian vegetation
Rotation periods of late-type stars in the young open cluster IC 2602
We present the results of a monitoring campaign aimed at deriving rotation
periods for a representative sample of stars in the young (30 Myr) open cluster
IC 2602. Rotation periods were derived for 29 of 33 stars monitored. The
periods derived range from 0.2d (one of the shortest known rotation periods of
any single open cluster star) to about 10d (which is almost twice as long as
the longest period previously known for a cluster of this age). We are able to
confirm 8 previously known periods and derive 21 new ones, delineating the long
period end of the distribution. Despite our sensitivity to longer periods, we
do not detect any variables with periods longer than about 10d. The combination
of these data with those for IC 2391, an almost identical cluster, leads to the
following conclusions:
1) The fast rotators in a 30 Myr cluster are distributed across the entire
0.5 < B-V < 1.6 color range.
2) 6 stars in our sample are slow rotators, with periods longer than 6d.
3) The amplitude of variability depends on both the color and the period. The
dependence on the latter might be important in understanding the selection
effects in the currently available rotation period database and in planning
future observations.
4) The interpretation of these data in terms of theoretical models of
rotating stars suggests both that disk-interaction is the norm rather than the
exception in young stars and that disk-locking times range from zero to a few

A Spitzer/IRAC Search for Substellar Companions of the Debris Disk Star epsilon Eridani
We have used the InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) onboard the Spitzer Space
telescope to search for low mass companions of the nearby debris disk star
epsilon Eridani. The star was observed in two epochs 39 days apart, with
different focal plane rotation to allow the subtraction of the instrumental
Point Spread Function, achieving a maximum sensitivity of 0.01 MJy/sr at 3.6
and 4.5 um, and 0.05 MJy/sr at 5.8 and 8.0 um. This sensitivity is not
sufficient to directly detect scattered or thermal radiation from the epsilon
Eridani debris disk. It is however sufficient to allow the detection of Jovian
planets with mass as low as 1 MJ in the IRAC 4.5 um band. In this band, we
detected over 460 sources within the 5.70 arcmin field of view of our images.
To test if any of these sources could be a low mass companion to epsilon
Eridani, we have compared their colors and magnitudes with models and
photometry of low mass objects. Of the sources detected in at least two IRAC
bands, none fall into the range of mid-IR color and luminosity expected for
cool, 1 Gyr substellar and planetary mass companions of epsilon Eridani, as
determined by both models and observations of field M, L and T dwarf. We
identify three new sources which have detections at 4.5 um only, the lower
limit placed on their [3.6]-[4.5] color consistent with models of planetary
mass objects. Their nature cannot be established with the currently available
data and a new observation at a later epoch will be needed to measure their
proper motion, in order to determine if they are physically associated to

Mid-Infrared Observations of the White Dwarf Brown Dwarf Binary GD 1400
Fluxes are measured for the DA white dwarf plus brown dwarf pair GD 1400 with
the Infrared Array Camera on the {\em Spitzer Space Telescope}. GD 1400
displays an infrared excess over the entire m region consistent with
the presence of a mid- to late-type L dwarf companion. A discussion is given

Water Abundance in Molecular Cloud Cores
We present Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite (SWAS) observations of the
1_{10}-1_{01} transition of ortho-water at 557 GHz toward 12 molecular cloud
cores. The water emission was detected in NGC 7538, Rho Oph A, NGC 2024, CRL
2591, W3, W3(OH), Mon R2, and W33, and was not detected in TMC-1, L134N, and
B335. We also present a small map of the water emission in S140. Observations
of the H_2^{18}O line were obtained toward S140 and NGC 7538, but no emission
was detected. The abundance of ortho-water relative to H_2 in the giant
molecular cloud cores was found to vary between 6x10^{-10} and 1x10^{-8}. Five
of the cloud cores in our sample have previous water detections; however, in
all cases the emission is thought to arise from hot cores with small angular
extents. The water abundance estimated for the hot core gas is at least 100
times larger than in the gas probed by SWAS. The most stringent upper limit on
the ortho-water abundance in dark clouds is provided in TMC-1, where the

The Distribution of Water Emission in M17SW
We present a 17-point map of the M17SW cloud core in the 1_{10}-1_{01}
transition of ortho-water at 557 GHz obtained with the Submillimeter Wave
Astronomy Satellite. Water emission was detected in 11 of the 17 observed
positions. The line widths of the water emission vary between 4 and 9 km
s^{-1}, and are similar to other emission lines that arise in the M17SW core. A
direct comparison is made between the spatial extent of the water emission and
the ^{13}CO J = 5\to4 emission; the good agreement suggests that the water
emission arises in the same warm, dense gas as the ^{13}CO emission. A spectrum
of the H_2^{18}O line was also obtained at the center position of the cloud
core, but no emission was detected. We estimate that the average abundance of
ortho-water relative to H_2 within the M17 dense core is approximately
1x10^{-9}, 30 times smaller than the average for the Orion core. Toward the H
II region/molecular cloud interface in M17SW the ortho-water abundance may be

Discovery of Two T Dwarf Companions with the Spitzer Space Telescope
We report the discovery of T dwarf companions to the nearby stars HN Peg
(G0V, 18.4 pc, ~0.3 Gyr) and HD 3651 (K0V, 11.1 pc, ~7 Gyr). During an ongoing
survey of 5'x5' fields surrounding stars in the solar neighborhood with IRAC
aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope, we identified these companions as candidate
T dwarfs based on their mid-IR colors. Using near-IR spectra obtained with SpeX
at the NASA IRTF, we confirm the presence of methane absorption that
characterizes T dwarfs and measure spectral types of T2.5+/-0.5 and T7.5+/-0.5
for HN Peg B and HD 3651 B, respectively. By comparing our Spitzer data to
images from 2MASS obtained several years earlier, we find that the proper
motions of HN Peg B and HD 3651 B are consistent with those of the primaries,
confirming their companionship. HN Peg B and HD 3651 B have angular separations
of 43.2" and 42.9" from their primaries, which correspond to projected physical
separations of 795 and 476 AU, respectively. A comparison of their luminosities
to the values predicted by theoretical evolutionary models implies masses of
0.021+/-0.009 and 0.051+/-0.014 Msun for HN Peg B and HD 3651 B. In addition,
the models imply an effective temperature for HN Peg B that is significantly
lower than the values derived for other T dwarfs at similar spectral types,
which is the same behavior reported by Metchev & Hillenbrand for the young
late-L dwarf HD 203030 B. Thus, the temperature of the L/T transition appears
to depend on surface gravity. Meanwhile, HD 3651 B is the first substellar
companion directly imaged around a star that is known to harbor a close-in
planet from RV surveys. The discovery of this companion supports the notion
that the high eccentricities of close-in planets like the one near HD 3651 may
be the result of perturbations by low-mass companions at wide separations.Comment: Astrophysical Journal, in pres
Near and Mid-IR Photometry of the Pleiades, and a New List of Substellar Candidate Members
We make use of new near and mid-IR photometry of the Pleiades cluster in
order to help identify proposed cluster members. We also use the new photometry
with previously published photometry to define the single-star main sequence
locus at the age of the Pleiades in a variety of color-magnitude planes.
The new near and mid-IR photometry extend effectively two magnitudes deeper
than the 2MASS All-Sky Point Source catalog, and hence allow us to select a new
set of candidate very low mass and sub-stellar mass members of the Pleiades in
the central square degree of the cluster. We identify 42 new candidate members
fainter than Ks =14 (corresponding to 0.1 Mo). These candidate members should
eventually allow a better estimate of the cluster mass function to be made down
to of order 0.04 solar masses.
We also use new IRAC data, in particular the images obtained at 8 um, in
order to comment briefly on interstellar dust in and near the Pleiades. We
confirm, as expected, that -- with one exception -- a sample of low mass stars
recently identified as having 24 um excesses due to debris disks do not have
significant excesses at IRAC wavelengths. However, evidence is also presented
that several of the Pleiades high mass stars are found to be impacting with
local condensations of the molecular cloud that is passing through the Pleiades

Major depression, fibromyalgia and labour force participation: A population-based cross-sectional study
BACKGROUND: Previous studies have documented an elevated frequency of depressive symptoms and disorders in fibromyalgia, but have not examined the association between this comorbidity and occupational status. The purpose of this study was to describe these epidemiological associations using a national probability sample. METHODS: Data from iteration 1.1 of the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) were used. The CCHS 1.1 was a large-scale national general health survey. The prevalence of major depression in subjects reporting that they had been diagnosed with fibromyalgia by a health professional was estimated, and then stratified by demographic variables. Logistic regression models predicting labour force participation were also examined. RESULTS: The annual prevalence of major depression was three times higher in subjects with fibromyalgia: 22.2% (95% CI 19.4 – 24.9), than in those without this condition: 7.2% (95% CI 7.0 – 7.4). The association persisted despite stratification for demographic variables. Logistic regression models predicting labour force participation indicated that both conditions had an independent (negative) effect on labour force participation. CONCLUSION: Fibromyalgia and major depression commonly co-occur and may be related to each other at a pathophysiological level. However, each syndrome is independently and negatively associated with labour force participation. A strength of this study is that it was conducted in a large probability sample from the general population. The main limitations are its cross-sectional nature, and its reliance on self-reported diagnoses of fibromyalgia
The dermal skeleton of the jawless vertebrate Tremataspis mammilata (Osteostraci, stem-Gnathostomata)
Osteostracans are the closest jawless relatives of jawed vertebrates, informing the gradual assembly of the vertebrate mineralised skeleton. Conflicting interpretations of their dermal skeletal histology arise from failure to account for topological variation, obscuring their significance in elucidating vertebrate skeletal evolution. To resolve this, we characterize the cranial and trunk dermal skeleton of a single individual of Tremataspis mammilata (Osteostraci, Thyestiida) at submicron resolution using synchrotron tomography. Our results show that the architecture of the Tremataspis dermal skeleton is, for the most part, conserved over the skeleton and is broadly consistent with previous histological hypotheses based on 2-dimensional thin section study. We resolve debate over the homology of the basal layer, identifying it as osteogenic acellular isopedin rather than odontogenic elasmodine or metaplastic ossification of the stratum compactum of the dermis. We find topological variation between all dermal skeletal elements studied, and particularly between the cranial and postcranial dermal skeleton. This variation can be largely explained by reduction in differentiation due to geometric constraints imposed within smaller skeletal elements, such as scales. Our description of the dermal skeleton of Tremataspis mammilata provides a foundation for interpreting data from cursory topological samples of dermal skeletal diversity obtained in other osteostracans. This reveals general aspects of histological structure that must be primitive for osteostracans and, likely, ancestral jawed vertebrates.
