Perceived similarity of other customers on service experience

This study aims to examine how a mere appearance of other similar customers will influence the perceived service quality of a potential customer. This research involves two experimental studies. Findings shows that if potential customers perceive other customers to be similar (vs. dissimilar) in a hospitality setting with regard to age, they will have more favorable perceptions toward the service quality and have a higher purchase intention. However, the positive impact of the similarity in age cohort can override the negative impact of dissimilarity in ethnicity on one\u27s perceived service quality and purchase intentions. The results provide implications for hospitality managers

Liu Xiaobo and “Charter 08”: Freedom of Expression and Cultural Relativism

Late Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo represents the fate of a typical case of a dissident in contemporary China under the Communist regime. The Communist China regime always defends against any criticism of its human rights records, in particular freedom of expression cases like Liu Xiaobo, and brands any such criticism as “interfering with China’s internal affairs” and claims that China is a rule of law country, although what it really means is rule by law under an authoritarian regime but not the Western concept of rule of law. Through looking at Liu Xiaobo’s case and China’s defense of its human rights record with cultural relativist arguments, this article aims at arguing how the Communist China regime fails to address its increasingly significant role in the global community and how the current Chinese regime cannot deny the fact that it is also part of the universalist narrative of human rights concepts as being a core member of international organizations like the United Nations. Therefore, it can only reflect and represent the reality if China can acknowledge the fact that John Rawls’ theory on reflective equilibrium on justice is applicable instead of merely defending itself with cultural relativism and defying the duty of fulfilling the obligation of being a major player in the international community

Energy-Efficient Algorithms on Mesh-Connected Systems with Additional Communication Links.

Energy consumption has become a critical factor constraining the design of massively parallel computers, necessitating the development of new models and energy-efficient algorithms. In this work we take a fundamental abstract model of massive parallelism, the mesh-connected computer, and extend it with additional communication links motivated by recent advances in on-chip photonic interconnects. This new means of communication with optical signals rather than electrical signals can reduce the energy and/or time of calculations by providing faster communication between distant processing elements. Processors are arranged in a two-dimensional grid with wire connections between adjacent neighbors and an additional one or two layers of noncrossing optical connections. Varying constraints on the layout of optics affect how powerful the model can be. In this dissertation, three optical interconnection layouts are defined: the optical mesh, the optical mesh of trees, and the optical pyramid. For each layout, algorithms for solving important problems are presented. Since energy usage is an important factor, running times are given in terms of a peak-power constraint, where peak power is the maximum number of processors active at any one time. These results demonstrate advantages of optics in terms of improved time and energy usage over the standard mesh computer without optics. One of the most significant results shows an optimal nonlinear time/peak-power tradeoff for sorting on the optical pyramid. This work shows asymptotic theoretical limits of computation and energy usage on an abstract model which takes physical constraints and developing interconnection technology into account.PhDComputer Science & EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. Diffusive evaporation dynamics in polymer solutions is ubiquitous

Recent theory and experiments have shown how the buildup of a high-concentration polymer layer at a one-dimensional solvent-air interface can lead to an evaporation rate that scales with time as t1/2t^{-1/2} and that is insensitive to the ambient humidity. Using phase field modelling we show that this scaling law constitutes a naturally emerging robust regime, Diffusion-Limited Evaporation (DLE). This regime dominates the dynamical state diagram of the system, which also contains regions of constant and arrested evaporation, confirming and extending understanding of recent experimental observations and theoretical predictions. We provide a theoretical argument to show that the scaling observed in the DLE regime occurs for a wide range of parameters, and our simulations predict that it can occur in two-dimensional geometries as well. Finally, we discuss possible extensions to more complex systems.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

Using Positive Youth Development Constructs to Design a Drug Education Curriculum for Junior Secondary Students in Hong Kong

    Get PDF
This paper outlines the design of a new curriculum for positive youth development (P.A.T.H.S. II) in Hong Kong. The paper discusses the conceptual base for designing a drug-education curriculum for junior-secondary students using four positive youth development constructs—cognitive competence, emotional competence, beliefs in the future, and self-efficacy. The program design is premised on the belief that adolescents do have developmental assets; therefore, the curriculum is designed to develop their psychosocial competencies. The goal of the curriculum is to develop the selfhood of these youths and ultimately achieve the goal of successful adolescent development

Using Positive Youth Development Constructs to Design a Money Management Curriculum for Junior Secondary School Students in Hong Kong

    Get PDF
This paper aims to discuss the relationships between the selected positive youth development constructs and the enhancement of Hong Kong junior secondary school students' money management skills, values, and attitudes. Various issues of money management of adolescents are reviewed. These issues include the need for money management programs for adolescents, the content and coverage of an appropriate money management program, and its relationships with the selected positive youth development constructs. The curriculum units for secondary 3 students are taken as examples to illustrate the design of the program. It is believed that promoting cognitive competence, self-efficacy, and spirituality could be an effective way to enhance students' money management skills, values, and attitudes, thus preparing them better for facing the finance-related issues in life
