    Collisional Formation and Modeling of Asteroid Families

    In the last decade, thanks to the development of sophisticated numerical codes, major breakthroughs have been achieved in our understanding of the formation of asteroid families by catastrophic disruption of large parent bodies. In this review, we describe numerical simulations of asteroid collisions that reproduced the main properties of families, accounting for both the fragmentation of an asteroid at the time of impact and the subsequent gravitational interactions of the generated fragments. The simulations demonstrate that the catastrophic disruption of bodies larger than a few hundred meters in diameter leads to the formation of large aggregates due to gravitational reaccumulation of smaller fragments, which helps explain the presence of large members within asteroid families. Thus, for the first time, numerical simulations successfully reproduced the sizes and ejection velocities of members of representative families. Moreover, the simulations provide constraints on the family dynamical histories and on the possible internal structure of family members and their parent bodies.Comment: Chapter to appear in the (University of Arizona Press) Space Science Series Book: Asteroids I

    Wave Functions of the Proton Ground State in the Presence of a Uniform Background Magnetic Field in Lattice QCD

    We calculate the probability distributions of quarks in the ground state of the proton, and how they are affected in the presence of a constant background magnetic field. We focus on wave functions in the Landau and Coulomb gauges. We observe the formation of a scalar u-d diquark clustering. The overall distortion of the quark probability distribution under a very large magnetic field, as demanded by the quantisation conditions on the field, is quite small. The effect is to elongate the distributions along the external field axis while localizing the remainder of the distribution.Comment: 15 pages, 18 figure

    The phospholipids of corynebacteria

    The phospholipids ofCorynebacterium diphtheriae, Corynebacterium xerosis, Corynebacterium equi andCorynebacterium ovis were examined, largely by chromatographic procedures. In all of these, lipids of the phosphoinositide and mannophosphoinositide type were prominent. In contrast to the mycobacteria, the mannophosphoinositides of the corynebacteria were all dimannophosphoinositides; however, as in mycobacteria, these dimannophosphoinositides apparently occurred in the diacylated and triacylated forms—the tetraacylated component prominent in mycobacteria was absent. Phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylserine were also absent. InCorynebacterium diphtheriae the major single phospholipid corresponded to phosphatidylglycerol: cardiolipin also appeared to be a major lipid. The fatty acids of the corynebacterial phospholipids were distinguished by the presence of branched chain isomers of medium chain length.
