Surface water monitoring for fecal indicator bacteria in high-use sites of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area

The Lake Mead National Recreation Area incorporates 1.5 million acres, including Lake Mead and Lake Mohave. The abundance of recreational activities on Lakes Mead and Mohave can impact the contaminant levels in the water, potentially affecting the health of individuals in contact with the water. The purpose of this study was to review and synthesize information obtained for projects conducted by partner agencies from the Water 2025 Conservation Initiatives, specifically bacterial concentration in high-use areas. Surface water samples were collected between May and September, at 9 high-use sites from 2003 to 2007. Culture analysis was performed to determine the concentration of fecal coliforms, enterococci, fecal streptococci, and Escherichia coli. Test results of 324 water samples analyzed for E. coli showed only one instance of a concentration higher than the acceptable limit. Enterococci concentrations above the acceptable limit were found in 13% of the 165 samples. In addition, 9% of 317 samples exceeded the acceptable limit for fecal streptococci, and fecal coliforms were present in concentrations above the acceptable limit in 3% of the 324 samples analyzed. Throughout the five-year study, three sites, Middle Point Cove, Boxcar Cove, and 6-Mile Cove, were identified as those with the highest frequency of unacceptable levels of the indicator organisms monitored. The results of this study will be used to address the technical soundness of monitoring at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and will identify management recommendations to the National Park Service

    Improving the patient's experience

When arriving at the eye care unit, patients often feel unsure of what is going to happen, anxious, and vulnerable. Many have never found themselves in a hospital setting before or have never travelled or slept away from home.It is an integral part of eye care to make sure a patient's experience is a positive one. This article offers suggestions for good, evidence-based, practice to improve this experience. Our suggestions should necessarily be adapted to local context: resource-poor settings are particularly challenging work environments and staff may need to display more ingenuity in working towards good practice, when striving to achieve the goals of VISION 2020

Identifying Faculty Perceptions Of Awareness And Preparedness Relating To ADA Compliance At A Small, Private College In NE PA

    Get PDF
This paper explores post-secondary faculty perceptions of awareness and preparedness relating to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Institutions of higher education are businesses. The largest threat to sustained viability for many businesses is litigation. Business-related litigation is often the result of non-employment discrimination or torts (violation of civil rights).  Lack of knowledge (awareness and preparedness) is usually not a sufficient reason for defendants in business-related litigation. The number of college students reporting learning-related disabilities is growing. About 2.2 million students enrolled in higher education institutions have a documented disability (National Center for Education Statistics, 2016). Disability related litigation is a trending concern for institutions of higher education.  Are post-secondary faculty ‘aware’ and ‘prepared’ to make the necessary accommodations for students with qualified learning disabilities in classrooms? ADA awareness is defined as cognizance relating to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.  ADA preparedness is defined as readiness and ability to follow obligations relating to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.  A moderate, positive correlation was discovered between the two variables, indicating the more awareness one has of ADA laws and requirements, the more prepared one is in dealing with accommodations for those with learning disabilities. Research indicates a need for updated and current training in the area of ADA awareness and preparedness of post-secondary faculty

Exploring The Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence And Academic Stress Among Students At A Small, Private College

    Get PDF
This research explored the relationship between total-trait emotional intelligence and academic stress among college students at a small, private college. Student total-trait emotional intelligence (TTEI) and university stress scores were significantly correlated. Measures of TTEI and USS are useful for student intervention to impact issues such as attrition. To increase retention, small private colleges benefit significantly from knowing students’ level of academic stress and emotional intelligence. Identifying specific factors and mitigating the adverse effects of these factors allows small colleges the opportunity to provide additional services for students

Effectiveness of a Portable, Large-Area Ultraviolet Germicidal Device

Effective disinfection of the hospital environment is a key component in the prevention of healthcare-associated infections. The objective of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of an ultraviolet germicidal device in reducing the concentrations of culturable bacteria on indoor surfaces. The ultraviolet germicidal device was installed and operated in four experimental trials conducted in a microbiology research chamber. Agar plates inoculated with known concentrations of two test microorganisms were placed on benches inside the chamber at two distances, 1.5 meters and 3.0 meters from the machine, for exposure times of 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and 20 minutes. With test agar plates directly exposed to ultraviolet radiation, percent reductions were all \u3e99.9% compared with the laboratory control plates. However, with indirect UV exposure, the edge of the plastic petri dishes provided some protection from the UV source, as indicated by the presence of colonies along the edge of the agar plates. Additional research will be conducted to further characterize the device for optimal use in surface decontamination and to determine its effectiveness in reducing airborne culturable bacterial concentrations
