    Learning style and learning strategies in a multimedia environment

    There is a growing realization that it may be expeditious to combine elements from different theories of learning when trying to derive a coherent and usable policy towards computer‐mediated learning. Consideration of the subtle distinction between Computer‐Aided Learning (CAL) and Computer‐Aided Instruction (CAI) conform the basis of a possible classification of computer‐mediated learning, and hence of multimedia tools. This classification enables the development of a continuum upon which to place various strategies for computer‐mediated learning, and hence a means of broadly classifying multimedia learning tools

    Uses of peer assessment in database teaching and learning

    This discussion paper introduces three very different methods and contexts for the use of peer assessment in introductory database classes, each of which is supported by different learning software tools. In the first case study, at Glasgow Caledonian University, Contributing Student Pedagogy is used, where students contribute to the learning of others through the collaborative creation of a bank of self-assessment questions. This is supported by the Peerwise software tool. Secondly, at the University of Strathclyde, students undertake formative assessment of others in providing feedback on an initial element of a larger coursework assessment. A number of virtual learning environments (VLEs) are capable of supporting this method through customisable discussion fora. Finally, at the Abertay University, peer and self assessment are used in a group project to adjust the group grade for individual students.     Recent advances at NASA in calculating the electronic spectra of diatomic molecules

    Advanced entry vehicles, such as the proposed Aero-assisted Orbital Transfer Vehicle, provide new and challenging problems for spectroscopy. Large portions of the flow field about such vehicles will be characterized by chemical and thermal nonequilibrium. Only by considering the actual overlap of the atomic and rotational lines emitted by the species present can the impact of radiative transport within the flow field be assessed correctly. To help make such an assessment, a new computer program is described that can generate high-resolution, line-by-line spectra for any spin-allowed transitions in diatomic molecules. The program includes the matrix elements for the rotational energy and distortion to the fourth order; the spin-orbit, spin-spin, and spin-rotation interactions to first order; and the lambda splitting by a perturbation calculation.     Reducing the external environmental costs of pastoral farming in New Zealand: experiences from the Te Arawa lakes, Rotorua

    Decades of nutrient pollution have caused water quality to decline in the nationally iconic Te Arawa (Rotorua) lakes in New Zealand. Pastoral agriculture is a major nutrient source, and therefore this degradation represents an external environmental cost to intensive farming. This cost is borne by the wider community, and a major publically funded remediation programme is now under way. This article describes the range of actions being taken to reduce nutrient loads from internal (lake bed sediments) and external (primarily diffuse) sources in the lake catchments. The high economic cost and uncertain efficacy of engineering-based actions to reduce internal nutrient loads is highlighted. Major changes to land management practices to control diffuse nutrient pollution are required throughout New Zealand if the need for costly and lengthy remediation programmes elsewhere is to be avoided. More action to educate farmers and the public about eutrophication issues, development and enforcement of environmental standards, and further consideration of the use of market-based instruments are proposed as ways to correct the current market failure

    The Significance of Regulatory Orientation in Occupational Health and Safety Offshore

    The 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico has led to calls for the United States’ prescriptive regulatory approach to offshore safety to be replaced with something closer to the Safety Case regime that was introduced in the United Kingdom following the Piper Alpha disaster in the North Sea in 1988. This Article traces the evolution of offshore safety regulation in the UK to explain the reasons for the abandonment of prescriptive regulation in favour of the Safety Case approach, and to outline the key features of the latter regime. Noting both the apparent strengths and weaknesses of the Safety Case, the paper concludes that while there may be good reasons for avoiding a wholesale transplant of the United Kingdom’s approach, there may equally be important lessons to be drawn from the long and often difficult evolution of offshore safety regulation in that jurisdiction
