We have reported two cases of Berardinelli-syndrome in a family which is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of the adipose tissue, originally described by Berardinelli and Seip, has been reported in approximately 120 patients of various ethnic origins. Assuming that only 1 in 4 patients is reported.Patients present with acanthosis nigricans (dark velvety pigmentation of the skin) in the axilla, neck or groin, severe insulin resistance, high levels of serum insulin and serum triglycerides. The other clinical features consist of enlarged hands, feet and prominent mandible (acromegaloid features), increased sweating, umbilical hernia and lytic lesions (bone appear to be eaten-up on X-rays) in long bones of the upper and lower extremities (arms, forearm, hands, thigh, calf, legs and feet) such as humerus, femur, etc. Hepatomegaly from fatty liver is almost universal and may ultimately lead to cirrhosis. Splenomegaly is common. Nearly all patients have a prominent umbilicus or frank umbilical hernia. Females present with enlarged clitoris, increased body hair, absence of or irregular menstrual cycles, and polycystic ovaries (enlarged ovaries). Only a few affected women have had successful pregnancies, whereas affected men have normal fertilit

Pack Rust Identification and Mitigation Strategies for Steel Bridges

    Get PDF
Pack rust or crevice corrosion is a type of localized corrosion. When a metal is in contact with a metal, or even non-metal, the metal starts to corrode, and rust starts to pack in between the surfaces. When significant development of pack rust occurs, it can cause overstressing of bolts and rivets causing them to fail, and it can bend connecting plates and member elements thus reducing their buckling capacity. Thus it is important to mitigate the formation and growth of pack rust in bridges. This study was conducted to determine if pack rust occurs frequently and thereby may pose a problem in the state of Indiana. The study is divided into three primary tasks. The first part of the study involves understanding the parameters involved in the initiation process of crevice corrosion and post-initiation crevice corrosion process. The second part of the study involves reviewing existing mitigation strategies and repair procedures used by state DOTs. The third part of the study involves identifying steel bridges with pack rust in Indiana. Analyses were performed on the data collected from Indiana bridges that have pack rust. This involved finding the components and members of bridges which are most affected by pack rust and finding parameters which influence the formation of pack rust. Pack rust in the steel bridges were identified using the INDOT inspection reports available through BIAS system. The study revealed that good maintenance practices helped in reducing pack rust formation. The study identified locations on steel bridges which have a high probability towards pack rust formation. A mitigating strategy possessing qualities which can show promising results is identified

Microstrip printed wide slot antenna with a fork like tuning stub for bandwidth enhancement is proposed in this paper. By applying fork like tuning stub to the microstrip wide slot antenna instead of line feed, it is experimentally found that operating bandwidth can be enhanced. Experimental results indicate that the impedance bandwidth, defined by -10dB return loss, of the proposed wide slot antenna can reach operating bandwidth of 3.1 GHz at operating frequency about 2 GHz which is 6 times greater than conventional wide slot antenna

Objective: Preterm birth (PTB) is the leading cause of high infant mortality and long-term disability in young children worldwide. Array of adverse maternal and fetal outcomes linked with vitamin D level and its associated vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene. We undertook this study to investigate the association between VDR gene polymorphism with vitamin D deficiency and PTB in West Indian pregnant women. Methods: A total of 72 women with PTB and 138 healthy mothers with uncomplicated normal delivery were selected from different regions of Gujarat, India. FokI and TaqI single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of VDR gene determined by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism. Vitamin D level was determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.Result: ff genotype (29.17% vs. 10.87%, p=0.002) and f allele (49.31% vs. 35.51%, p=0.006) frequency distributions of VDR FokI showed significantly (odds ratio=0.566, 95% confidence interval=0.368-0.870, p=0.006) higher in women with preterm delivery than in control full term group. Genotype frequency of VDR TaqI showed no significant difference between preterm group and control. Conclusion: These results confirmed that women carrying ff genotype of FokI gene had significantly higher risk for vitamin D deficiency which enhances the risk of prematurity than women carrying FF genotype in West Indian women

A developmentally regulated Na-H exchanger in Dictyostelium discoideum is necessary for cell polarity during chemotaxis

Increased intracellular H+ efflux is speculated to be an evolutionarily conserved mechanism necessary for rapid assembly of cytoskeletal filaments and for morphological polarity during cell motility. In Dictyostelium discoideum, increased intracellular pH through undefined transport mechanisms plays a key role in directed cell movement. We report that a developmentally regulated Na-H exchanger in Dictyostelium discoideum (DdNHE1) localizes to the leading edge of polarized cells and is necessary for intracellular pH homeostasis and for efficient chemotaxis. Starved DdNHE1-null cells (Ddnhe1−) differentiate, and in response to the chemoattractant cAMP they retain directional sensing; however, they cannot attain a polarized morphology, but instead extend mislocalized pseudopodia around the cell and exhibit decreased velocity. Consistent with impaired polarity, in response to chemoattractant, Ddnhe1− cells lack a leading edge localization of F-actin and have significantly attenuated de novo F-actin polymerization but increased abundance of membrane-associated phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-trisphosphate (PI(3,4,5)P3). These findings indicate that during chemotaxis DdNHE1 is necessary for establishing the kinetics of actin polymerization and PI(3,4,5)P3 production and for attaining a polarized phenotype
