Is Mob Lynching a Contemporary Social Problem in India?
The cases of mob lynching against the vulnerable groups are the matter of grave concern in contemporary Indian Society which is the worst form of crime against humanity. Today, people belong to vulnerable groups such as minorities and Dalits are seriously attacked and assaulted to death by a mob of people of a particular community. These cases of mob lynching definitely affect the way of life and sense of well-being of minorities and Dalits to a large extent causing a fracture in their social and personal status in society which they have got as a human being. The objectives of the study are to understand the nature of mob lynching in the socio-cultural context of India and to examine the linkage between social media and mob lynching. The present study employs content analysis for the study of mob lynching. The data have been collected from lynching affected regions of the country through various Newspapers (Hindustan Times, The Hindu, The Indian Express and The Times of India etc., Delhi Edition) and monthly magazines (India Today and Economic Political Weekly etc.). The cases of mob lynching have been collected from March, 2013 to September, 2019. The study has found that the cases of lynching are committed against minorities and Dalits due to suspicion of beef consuming, cow slaughtering, skinning of dead cows child lifting, and theft. The study also indicates that most of cases of mob lynching are committed due to fake news, rumors and hate speeches which are circulated on social media platforms
Crime against Elderly Women in India
The cases of crime against the elderly women are rising fast in India. Today, elderly women are facing many problems such as murder, theft, hurt, cheating and bag snatching by the both known and unknown persons. These problems have certainly affected the way of life and sense of well-being of the elderly women. They are also deprived to live a dignified life due to these problems. The study has two objectives; first objective understands the nature of crime against the elderly women and second objective examines relationship between elderly women victims and their offenders and also examines the impact of crime on physical and emotional well-being of elderly women. This study is based on content analysis. The data have been collected through two national newspapers, namely, Amar Ujala and Dainik Jagran from March 2012 to March 2013. Findings indicate that the elderly women have been victimised due to property and lack of proper adjustment. The study has also found in many cases that elderly women have been targeted by known persons
Effect of Crime on the Wellbeing of the Elderly: A Content Analysis Study of Indian Elderly
The cases of crimes against the elderly are rising fast in India. Today, they are facing problems such as cheating, robbery, theft, mistreatment and murder. The paper analyses the different variables such as sex of victim, crime rate of an area and crime scene through content analysis and paper also examines victim-offender relationship through news items and other studies. These news items have been collected relating to crimes against the elderly from March 2012 to July 2012 (Amar Ujala and Dainik Jagran –Hindi language news papers, New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand Edition). The findings have shown that a number of elderly have been murdered and victimised due to property. Finally, the paper critically analyses the provisions initiated by the State for safety and security of the elderly. Study found that government has started “elderly helpline” in which elderly may register their problems. Government has also initiated “neighbourhood watch progamme” in collaboration with NGOs
Crises in Female Existence: Female Foeticide and Infanticide in India
In the era of science and technology people are being remedied from rarest of rare diseases by medical science, however, this boon of medical science is being misused in carrying out abortion knowing the female sex by ultra-sonography, amniotesis and other techniques. Consequently, the cases of female foeticide and infanticide are increasing fast in the several part of India. Moreover, if the baby girl takes birth, she is deprived of love and affection of the parents as she is abandoned to die on canals, coverts and footpath. This has been the reason that sex ratio is 1000:914 among 0-6 year old boys and girls which is declining day by day. The paper implies that female foeticide and infanticide are the insidious problem in Indian society which violate right to birth and protection of life of foetus and infant. The paper also examines the last three census of child sex ratio (0-6 years) which is decreasing on an alarming rate. Finally, the paper examines the status of remedial process and legal provisions to control female foeticide and infanticide
Dalit Suicide an Emerging Social Problem in India
There are various kinds of discrimination is prevailing in Indian Society. India is practising discrimination against the lower caste for many centuries. But in contemporary Indian Society, caste-based discrimination is becoming a matter of grave concern for committing suicide. Caste-based discrimination is surviving in Indian society. In many cases of caste discrimination, Dalits were persecuted by the upper caste of Indian society for demanding education, employment, and equal social status. Every year several Dalits were committing suicide due to atrocities and discrimination. The present study will understand the nature of suicide among Dalits due to social discrimination and explores the factors affecting Dalit suicide. The data on suicide have been collected from 2011 to 2021 through various newspapers, magazines, journals and articles
