Volume 3 represents a change in style for Flora Malesiana Series II, not just in the different coloured cover complete with illustration, but also in its stand-alone format. Each family, genus and species is described, and keys are provided for genera and species. For the two largest genera Microsorum (31 species) and Selliguea (49 species) regional keys to species are included in addition to the main key to species in Malesia. In total 228 species are described as follows: Polypodiaceae (183 species), Davalliaceae (31 species), Azollaceae (1 species), Cheiropleuriaceae (1 species), Equisetaceae (1 species), Matoniaceae (4 species) and Plagiogyriaceae (7 species). There is interesting discussion of regional variation within some of the more widespread species. The distribution of each taxon is given, but for Davalliaceae this should be extended to the north of the North Island of New Zealand where a new subspecies of Davallia tasmani was discovered more than ten years ago. The illustrations include 35 line drawings, mainly of Polypodiaceae, 4 plates of SEM photographs and 7 photographs of herbarium sheets

Asplenium alleniae (Aspleniaceae), a new fern species from Borneo and New Guinea

    No full text
A new species, Asplenium alleniae, is described from high elevation habitats in Sabah (Malaysia) and Papua New Guinea. Previous phylogenetic analyses of chloroplast loci determined that A. alleniae was most closely related to A. pauperequitum from New Zealand. Asplenium alleniae differs from A. pauperequitum most obviously by the acuminate apices of its longer pinnae. The combination of pinnate fronds with few pairs of primary pinnae and dark red-brown axes distinguishes A. alleniae from superficially similar species of Asplenium in Malesia. Asplenium alleniae is provisionally assessed as Endangered

An annotated checklist of lycophytes and ferns of the Solomon Islands

    No full text
We provide an annotated checklist of all known lycophytes and ferns in the Solomon Islands following an updated classification. It comprises two classes, 12 orders, 34 families, 122 genera, 449 species, and six infraspecific taxa, including 10 new species described here and 18 species newly recorded for the country. In addition, we make six new nomenclatural combinations as well as 53 lectotypifications. We include a discussion of type status, taxonomic uncertainty, and recent molecular phylogenetic research when relevant. The life forms and phytogeographic affinities of all species are presented and briefly discussed
