Relative age effects on academic achievement in the first ten years of formal schooling: A nationally representative longitudinal prospective study
The effects of school starting age and relative age effects (RAEs) have generated much interest from parents, teachers, policymakers, and educational researchers. Our 10-year longitudinal study is based on a nationally representative (N = 4,983) prospective sample from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children. The primary outcomes are results from the high-stake, Australia-wide National Assessment Program-Literacy and Numeracy tests in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9, controlling for demographic characteristics (gender, socioeconomic status, school type, and childhood cognition measured before the start of kindergarten). We evaluated how direct and mediated RAEs vary over the first 10 years of schooling for these longitudinal data. Results revealed significant RAEs in primary school years for both numeracy and literacy test outcomes. Effects were large in primary school years but declined in secondary school years. Although the direct effects of RAEs declined over time, there continued to be significant indirect effects over the whole 10-year period. RAEs in primary school had enduring effects that were mediated through the effects of earlier achievement. We juxtapose our results with previous RAE research on achievement and a range of other noncognitive outcomes where the RAEs are enduring into adolescence and even adulthood. We position our research within this broader research literature and discuss implications for educational policy, practice, theory, and future research
Reservoir-excess pressure parameters are independently associated with NT-proBNP in older adults
Aims Parameters derived from reservoir-excess pressure analysis have been demonstrated to predict cardiovascular events. Thus, altered reservoir-excess pressure parameters could have a detrimental effect on highly-perfused organs like the heart. We aimed to cross-sectionally determine whether reservoir-excess pressure parameters were associated with N-terminal pro-brain-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in older adults. Methods We studied 868 older adults with diverse cardiovascular risk. Reservoir-excess pressure parameters were obtained through radial artery tonometry including reservoir pressure integral, peak reservoir pressure, excess pressure integral (INTXSP), systolic rate constant (SRC) and diastolic rate constant (DRC). Plasma levels of NT-proBNP, as a biomarker of cardiac overload, were analysed by the Proximity Extension Assay technology. ResultsMultivariable linear regression analyses revealed that all reservoir-excess pressure parameters studied were associated with NT-proBNP after adjusting for age and sex. After further adjustments for conventional cardiovascular risk factors, INTXSP [β = 0.191 (95% confidence interval, CI: 0.099, 0.283), P < 0.001], SRC [β = −0.080 (95% CI: −0.141, −0.019), P = 0.010] and DRC [β = 0.138 (95% CI: 0.073, 0.202), P < 0.001] remained associated with NT-proBNP. Sensitivity analysis found that there were occasions where the association between SRC and NT-proBNP was attenuated, but both INTXSP and DRC remained consistently associated with NT-proBNP. Conclusions The observed associations between reservoir-excess pressure parameters and NT-proBNP suggest that altered reservoir-excess pressure parameters may reflect an increased load inflicted on the left ventricular cardiomyocytes and could have a potential to be utilized in the clinical setting for cardiovascular risk stratification.</p
Impact of acute stress, sex, and childhood maltreatment on fear learning and fear generalization in a fear-potentiated startle paradigm
Many researchers approach the etiology of trauma-, stressor-, and anxiety-related mental disorders from the perspective of classical conditioning processes gone awry. According to this view, abnormal associative relationships between conditioned and unconditioned stimuli may underlie pathological anxiety and result in unusually intense fear memories or fear memories that cannot be properly extinguished. Recent work has expanded on this view by showing that many psychological disorders involving pathological anxiety are associated with an exaggerated form of stimulus generalization, leading individuals with such disorders to respond with fear and anxiety to a variety of contexts and cues that should not be threatening. It is well-known that stress, biological sex, childhood maltreatment, and certain dispositional factors can increase one’s susceptibility for pathological anxiety and significantly impact fear learning; thus, it is possible that these factors, alone or in combination, contribute to clinical anxiety by influencing fear generalization processes. In the present study, 478 healthy undergraduate students were exposed to the socially-evaluated cold pressor test immediately or 30 min prior to learning to associate one geometrical shape, but not another, with an aversive stimulus in a fear-potentiated startle paradigm. The next day, participants were tested for fear generalization by measuring their fear responses to a variety of stimuli that were similar to, but different from, the shapes observed on Day 1. Objective and subjective measures of stress were collected on Day 1, and childhood maltreatment was quantified with the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. The results revealed that, across both stress time points, greater heart rate and greater cortisol levels in response to stress were associated with weaker fear acquisition and a flatter generalization gradient. These effects were influenced by participant sex and trait anxiety. We also found evidence to suggest that greater childhood maltreatment was associated with impaired fear acquisition in males but enhanced fear acquisition in females. These findings reveal a complex interaction between acute stress, biological sex, childhood maltreatment, dispositional anxiety, and fear learning that may lend insight into the etiology of certain stress-related psychological disorders
Reservoir-Excess Pressure Parameters Independently Predict Cardiovascular Events in Individuals With Type 2 Diabetes
The parameters derived from reservoir-excess pressure analysis (RPA) have prognostic utility in several populations. However, evidence in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) remains scarce. We determined if these parameters were associated with T2DM, and whether they would predict cardiovascular events in individuals with T2DM.We studied 306people with T2DM and cardiovascular disease (CVD)(DMCVD:70.4±7.8yrs), 348people with T2DM but without CVD (DM:67.7±8.4yrs) and 178peoplewithout T2DM or CVD (CTRL:67.2±8.9yrs). RPA-derived parameters including reservoir pressure integral (INTPR), peak reservoir pressure (MAXPR), excess pressure integral (INTXSP), systolic rate constant (SRC) and diastolic rate constant (DRC) were obtained by radial artery tonometry. INTPR was lower in DMCVD and DM than CTRL. MAXPR was lower, and INTXSP was greater in DMCVD than DM and CTRL. SRC was lower in a stepwise manner among groups(DMCVD<DM<CTRL).DRC was greater in DMCVD than CTRL. In the sub group of individuals with T2DM (n=642), 14 deaths (6 cardiovascular and 9non-cardiovascular causes) and 108cardiovascular events occurred during a 3-yr follow-up period. Logistic regression analysis revealed that INTPR [odds ratio 0.59(95%CI:0.45-0.79)] and DRC [odds ratio 1.60(95%CI:1.25-2.06)] were independent predictors of cardiovascular events during follow-up after adjusting for conventional risk factors(both p<0.001). Further adjustments for potential confounders had no influence on associations. These findings demonstrate that altered RPA-derived parameters are associated with T2DM. Furthermore, baseline values of INTPR and DRC independently predict cardiovascular events in individuals with T2DM, indicating the potential clinical utility of these parameters for risk stratification in T2DM
Carbon on the Northwest European Shelf: Contemporary Budget and Future Influences
A carbon budget for the northwest European continental shelf seas (NWES) was synthesized using available estimates for coastal, pelagic and benthic carbon stocks and flows. Key uncertainties were identified and the effect of future impacts on the carbon budget were assessed. The water of the shelf seas contains between 210 and 230 Tmol of carbon and absorbs between 1.3 and 3.3 Tmol from the atmosphere annually. Off-shelf transport and burial in the sediments account for 60–100 and 0–40% of carbon outputs from the NWES, respectively. Both of these fluxes remain poorly constrained by observations and resolving their magnitudes and relative importance is a key research priority. Pelagic and benthic carbon stocks are dominated by inorganic carbon. Shelf sediments contain the largest stock of carbon, with between 520 and 1600 Tmol stored in the top 0.1 m of the sea bed. Coastal habitats such as salt marshes and mud flats contain large amounts of carbon per unit area but their total carbon stocks are small compared to pelagic and benthic stocks due to their smaller spatial extent. The large pelagic stock of carbon will continue to increase due to the rising concentration of atmospheric CO2, with associated pH decrease. Pelagic carbon stocks and flows are also likely to be significantly affected by increasing acidity and temperature, and circulation changes but the net impact is uncertain. Benthic carbon stocks will be affected by increasing temperature and acidity, and decreasing oxygen concentrations, although the net impact of these interrelated changes on carbon stocks is uncertain and a major knowledge gap. The impact of bottom trawling on benthic carbon stocks is unique amongst the impacts we consider in that it is widespread and also directly manageable, although its net effect on the carbon budget is uncertain. Coastal habitats are vulnerable to sea level rise and are strongly impacted by management decisions. Local, national and regional actions have the potential to protect or enhance carbon storage, but ultimately global governance, via controls on emissions, has the greatest potential to influence the long-term fate of carbon stocks in the northwestern European continental shelf
Glucocorticoid Receptor-Dependent Gene Regulatory Networks
While the molecular mechanisms of glucocorticoid regulation of transcription have been studied in detail, the global networks regulated by the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) remain unknown. To address this question, we performed an orthogonal analysis to identify direct targets of the GR. First, we analyzed the expression profile of mouse livers in the presence or absence of exogenous glucocorticoid, resulting in over 1,300 differentially expressed genes. We then executed genome-wide location analysis on chromatin from the same livers, identifying more than 300 promoters that are bound by the GR. Intersecting the two lists yielded 53 genes whose expression is functionally dependent upon the ligand-bound GR. Further network and sequence analysis of the functional targets enabled us to suggest interactions between the GR and other transcription factors at specific target genes. Together, our results further our understanding of the GR and its targets, and provide the basis for more targeted glucocorticoid therapies
