Acceleration of the universe, vacuum metamorphosis, and the large-time asymptotic form of the heat kernel
We investigate the possibility that the late acceleration observed in the
rate of expansion of the universe is due to vacuum quantum effects arising in
curved spacetime. The theoretical basis of the vacuum cold dark matter (VCDM),
or vacuum metamorphosis, cosmological model of Parker and Raval is revisited
and improved. We show, by means of a manifestly nonperturbative approach, how
the infrared behavior of the propagator (related to the large-time asymptotic
form of the heat kernel) of a free scalar field in curved spacetime causes the
vacuum expectation value of its energy-momentum tensor to exhibit a resonance
effect when the scalar curvature R of the spacetime reaches a particular value
related to the mass of the field. we show that the back reaction caused by this
resonance drives the universe through a transition to an accelerating expansion
phase, very much in the same way as originally proposed by Parker and Raval.
Our analysis includes higher derivatives that were neglected in the earlier
analysis, and takes into account the possible runaway solutions that can follow
from these higher-derivative terms. We find that the runaway solutions do not
occur if the universe was described by the usual classical FRW solution prior
to the growth of vacuum energy-density and negative pressure (i.e., vacuum
metamorphosis) that causes the transition to an accelerating expansion of the
universe in this theory.Comment: 33 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to Physical Review D15 (Dec 23, 2003).

Multiple sclerosis and the microbiota:Progress in understanding the contribution of the gut microbiome to disease
Multiple sclerosis (MS), a neurological autoimmune disorder, has recently been linked to neuro-inflammatory influences from the gut. In this review, we address the idea that evolutionary mismatches could affect the pathogenesis of MS via the gut microbiota. The evolution of symbiosis as well as the recent introduction of evolutionary mismatches is considered, and evidence regarding the impact of diet on the MS-associated microbiota is evaluated. Distinctive microbial community compositions associated with the gut microbiota of MS patients are difficult to identify, and substantial study-to-study variation and even larger variations between individual profiles of MS patients are observed. Furthermore, although some dietary changes impact the progression of MS, MS-associated features of microbiota were found to be not necessarily associated with diet per se. In addition, immune function in MS patients potentially drives changes in microbial composition directly, in at least some individuals. Finally, assessment of evolutionary histories of animals with their gut symbionts suggests that the impact of evolutionary mismatch on the microbiota is less concerning than mismatches affecting helminths and protists. These observations suggest that the benefits of an anti-inflammatory diet for patients with MS may not be mediated by the microbiota per se. Furthermore, any alteration of the microbiota found in association with MS may be an effect rather than a cause. This conclusion is consistent with other studies indicating that a loss of complex eukaryotic symbionts, including helminths and protists, is a pivotal evolutionary mismatch that potentiates the increased prevalence of autoimmunity within a population
Explicit asymptotic modelling of transient Love waves propagated along a thin coating
The official published version can be obtained from the link below. An explicit asymptotic model for transient Love waves is derived from the exact equations of anti-plane elasticity. The perturbation procedure relies upon the slow decay of low-frequency Love waves to approximate the displacement field in the substrate by a power series in the depth coordinate. When appropriate decay conditions are imposed on the series, one obtains a model equation governing the displacement at the interface between the coating and the substrate. Unusually, the model equation contains a term with a pseudo-differential operator. This result is confirmed and interpreted by analysing the exact solution obtained by integral transforms. The performance of the derived model is illustrated by numerical examples. This work is sponsored by the grant from Higher Education of Pakistan and by the Brunel University’s “BRIEF” research award
Nonmesonic weak decay spectra of He
To comprehend the recent Brookhaven National Laboratory experiment E788 on
He, we have outlined a simple theoretical framework, based on the
independent-particle shell model, for the one-nucleon-induced nonmesonic weak
decay spectra. Basically, the shapes of all the spectra are tailored by the
kinematics of the corresponding phase space, depending very weakly on the
dynamics, which is gauged here by the one-meson-exchange-potential. In spite of
the straightforwardness of the approach a good agreement with data is acheived.
This might be an indication that the final-state-interactions and the
two-nucleon induced processes are not very important in the decay of this
hypernucleus. We have also found that the exchange potential with soft
vertex-form-factor cutoffs GeV, GeV), is able to account simultaneously for the available experimental
data related to and for H, He,
and He.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, submitted for publication; v2: major

Magnetohydrodynamics and Plasma Cosmology
We study the linear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations, both in the
Newtonian and the general-relativistic limit, as regards a viscous magnetized
fluid of finite conductivity and discuss instability criteria. In addition, we
explore the excitation of cosmological perturbations in anisotropic spacetimes,
in the presence of an ambient magnetic field. Acoustic, electromagnetic (e/m)
and fast-magnetosonic modes, propagating normal to the magnetic field, can be
excited, resulting in several implications of cosmological significance.Comment: 9 pages, RevTeX, To appear in the Proceedings of the Peyresq X

Certain aspects of regularity in scalar field cosmological dynamics
We consider dynamics of the FRW Universe with a scalar field. Using
Maupertuis principle we find a curvature of geodesics flow and show that zones
of positive curvature exist for all considered types of scalar field potential.
Usually, phase space of systems with the positive curvature contains islands of
regular motion. We find these islands numerically for shallow scalar field
potentials. It is shown also that beyond the physical domain the islands of
regularity exist for quadratic potentials as well.Comment: 15 pages with 4 figures; typos corrected, final version to appear in

Correlation and disorder-enhanced nematic spin response in superconductors with weakly broken rotational symmetry
Recent experimental and theoretical studies have highlighted the possible
role of a electronic nematic liquid in underdoped cuprate superconductors. We
calculate, within a model of d-wave superconductor with Hubbard correlations,
the spin susceptibility in the case of a small explicitly broken rotational
symmetry of the underlying lattice. We then exhibit how the induced spin
response asymmetry is strongly enhanced by correlations as one approaches the
instability to stripe order. In the disorder-induced stripe phase, impurities
become spin nematogens with a C_2 symmetric impurity resonance state, and the
disorder-averaged spin susceptibility remains only C_2 symmetric at low
energies, similar to recent data from neutron scattering experiments on
underdoped YBCO.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
