The Impact of Cultural Distance on the Performance of Foreign Subsidiaries: Evidence From the Korean Market

This study investigates whether the cultural distance between Korea and the home countries of foreign subsidiaries in Korea affects the subsidiariesā€™ financial performance. It contributes to the literature on international business in that it sheds light on cultural distance, a well-established but somewhat neglected concept in international business. Unlike most of the previous studies that have used cultural distance as a control or moderating variable, this study uses it as an independent variable in the context of globalization through foreign direct investments in Korea. Focusing on the possible positive side of broad cultural distance, we hypothesize that the performances of foreign subsidiaries are likely to be better when the cultural distance between their home countries and Korea increases. To test our hypothesis, we have conducted an empirical analysis, using data collected from 472 foreign subsidiaries doing business in Korea. The results support our argument that cultural distance has a positive impact on financial performance. This study finds that having cultural similarities with a foreign market does not guarantee success. Instead, it shows that firms can gain opportunities when incorporating in a foreign national market with broad cultural distance.&nbsp

Department of Electrical EngineeringFor ful filling the requirements of real-time communications, wireless communication system has to have ultra-low latency performance, namely latency less than 1ms. However, current cellular network with synchronous multiple-access, such as Long-Term Evolution(LTE), has fundamental limits to accomplish the requirement. In this thesis, asynchronous multiple-access, and related waveform, generalized frequency division multiplexing(GFDM), are studied as one of the alternatives. In the numerical analysis, GFDM and conventional modulation methods, such as single carrier frequency-division multiple-access(SC-FDMA) and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing(OFDM) modulations, are compared in the asynchronous uplink multiple-access environment with both link-level simulation(LLS) and system-level simulation(SLS). In the comparison, GFDM shows greater performance in the high signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) regime due to the better out-of-band emission performance than conventional modulation methods.ope

Sum-rates of asynchronous GFDMA and SC-FDMA for 5G uplink

The fifth generation (5G) of mobile communication envisions ultralow latency less than 1 ms for radio interface. To this end, frameless asynchronous multiple access may be needed to allow users to transmit instantly without waiting for the next frame start. In this paper, generalized frequency division multiple-access (GFDMA), one of the promising multiple-access candidates for 5G mobile, is compared with the conventional single-carrier FDMA (SC-FDMA) in terms of the uplink sum rate when both techniques are adapted for the asynchronous scenario. In particular, a waveform windowing technique is applied to both schemes to mitigate the inter-user interference due to non-zero out-of-band emission.ope

EFFECTS OF DRIVER PERSONAL VARIABLES ON PREFERRED VEHICLE INTERIOR COMPONENTS SETTING

This study identified and characterized the relationship between driver personal variables and preferred vehicle interior components setting. A two-phase modeling approach was employed to characterize the temporal, logical process involved in the driver selection of a preferred vehicle interior components setting. The modified Bayesian multivariate adaptive regression splines (BMARS) modeling method was employed to identify nonlinear and interactive relationships. Forty-two male and forty-four female drivers with a wide range of ages, stature, and BMI participated in the data collection. A highly adjustable vehicle mock-up was used to empirically obtain each participantā€™s preferred vehicle interior components setting. The study results indicated substantial non-anthropometric variability in the driver-selected seat horizontal positions and identified various interpretable nonlinearities and interactions. The study findings improve the understanding of the relationship between driver personal variables and preferred vehicle interior configuration and further inform the vehicle interior package design for driver accommodation

SGGNet2^2: Speech-Scene Graph Grounding Network for Speech-guided Navigation

The spoken language serves as an accessible and efficient interface, enabling non-experts and disabled users to interact with complex assistant robots. However, accurately grounding language utterances gives a significant challenge due to the acoustic variability in speakers' voices and environmental noise. In this work, we propose a novel speech-scene graph grounding network (SGGNet2^2) that robustly grounds spoken utterances by leveraging the acoustic similarity between correctly recognized and misrecognized words obtained from automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems. To incorporate the acoustic similarity, we extend our previous grounding model, the scene-graph-based grounding network (SGGNet), with the ASR model from NVIDIA NeMo. We accomplish this by feeding the latent vector of speech pronunciations into the BERT-based grounding network within SGGNet. We evaluate the effectiveness of using latent vectors of speech commands in grounding through qualitative and quantitative studies. We also demonstrate the capability of SGGNet2^2 in a speech-based navigation task using a real quadruped robot, RBQ-3, from Rainbow Robotics.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, Paper accepted for the Special Session at the 2023 International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication (RO-MAN), [Dohyun Kim, Yeseung Kim, Jaehwi Jang, and Minjae Song] contributed equally to this wor
