Does the shariah index move together with the conventional equity indexes?
Generally, Shariah (Islamic) indices are considered to have lower portfolio betas relative to conventional ones. The lower portfolio beta of Islamic indexes is a logical result of Shariah screening. As Shariah screening eliminates stocks with high financial leverage, the resulting portfolio beta ought to be lower because a stock’s beta is reflective of the underlying business risk and financial risk (leverage). With this motivation and background, we have tried to find out whether we can have diversification opportunities with combining Shariah index and conventional indexes. The results of analysis revealed the absence of cointegration between the DJIM index and three conventional indexes such as DAX, HangSeng, KL. This means that diversification opportunities exist for the mentioned indices. But for the S&P and DJIM, we found that they are cointegrated, which implies there exists long run theoretical relationship among the indices. Presence of cointegration indicates the absence of diversification opportunities in the concerned indices. So if we want to get diversification effect, we have to avoid setting up the portfolio with S&P and DJIM with the balanced weight. Because these two variables move together, the investors are not likely to get the positive portfolio effect particularly in the long term
Gender and Measuring-position Differences in the Radial Pulse of Healthy Individuals
AbstractIn this research, radial pulse differences according to gender and measuring positions in healthy individuals were investigated in an objective manner. A total of 372 healthy volunteers (189 males and 183 females) participated in this study. The radial pulse was measured at six different measuring positions using a multistep tonometry system. The pulse data were compared between males and females and between different measuring positions. Compared to the pulses in females, those in males were deeper and slower, with a longer diastolic proportion and a shorter systolic proportion. Amplitude of the radial pulse increased as it went distal. The pulse was deepest at the Cheock position and shallowest at the Gwan position. Compared to the right pulse, the radial augmentation index was higher and the main peak angle was larger in case of the left pulse. The results of this research show that the radial pulses in healthy individuals differ significantly according to gender and measuring positions
Recent advances in label-free imaging and quantification techniques for the study of lipid droplets in cells
Lipid droplets (LDs), once considered mere storage depots for lipids, have
gained recognition for their intricate roles in cellular processes, including
metabolism, membrane trafficking, and disease states like obesity and cancer.
This review explores label-free imaging techniques' applications in LD
research. We discuss holotomography and vibrational spectroscopic microscopy,
emphasizing their potential for studying LDs without molecular labels, and we
highlight the growing integration of artificial intelligence. Clinical
applications in disease diagnosis and therapy are also considered
Metal-free organic chromophores featuring an ethynyl-thienothiophene linker with an n-hexyl chain for translucent dye-sensitized solar cells
We report the simple synthesis of two organic chromophores featuring an ethynyl-thienothiophene linker with an n-hexyl chain (CSD-03 and CSD-04), their optical and electrochemical properties, and their use as photosensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Our theoretical and experimental studies show that adding the second thienothiophene allows for narrowing the bandgap of the molecule and thus ensuring more light harvesting in the visible region. The efficiencies of both CSD-03 (5.46 ± 0.03%) and CSD-04 (5.20 ± 0.03%) are comparable to that of N719 (5.92 ± 0.01%) in translucent DSSCs fabricated with 5 μm-thick TiO2 photoanodes

Chemical composition and anti-inflammatory effects of essential oil from Hallabong flower
A number of essential oils derived from plants are claimed to have several medicinal functions, including anti-cancer and anti-inflammation effects. However, the chemical composition and biological activities of flower-derived components have
not been sufficiently characterized. Therefore, we investigated the composition of essential oils from Hallabong flower
[(Citrus unshiu Marcov × Citrus sinensis
Osbeck) × Citrus reticulata Blanco] and their anti-inflammatory effects. Hydro-dist
illed essential oils (HEOs) were analyzed using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). In total, 21 components were identified, representing more than 98 % of the oils, with sabinene (34.75 %), linalool (14.77 %), β-ocimene (11.07 %), 4-terpineol (9.63 %), L-limonene (5.88 %), and γ-terpinene (4.67 %) as the main components. In the present study, we also investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of HEOs on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 26
4.7 macrophage cells. HEOs were found to
inhibit nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production and to suppress the LPS-
induced expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) protein. In addition, HEOs downregulated the production of the inflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1
β(IC50 values are 0.05 %, 0.02 %, and 0.01 %, respectively). On the basis of these
results, we suggest that HEOs can be consid
ered potential anti-inflammatory candidates for therapeutic use in humans
ECG measurement on a chair without conductive contact
For the purpose of long-term, everyday electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring, we present a convenient method of ECG measurement without direct conductive contact with the skin while subjects sat on a chair wearing normal clothes. Measurements were made using electrodes attached to the back of a chair, high-input-impedance amplifiers mounted on the electrodes, and a large ground-plane placed on the chair seat. ECGs were obtained by the presented method for several types of clothing and compared to ECGs obtained from conventional measurement using Ag-AgCl electrodes. Motion artifacts caused by usual desk works were investigated. This study shows the feasibility of the method for long-term, convenient, everyday use
