The Expression of Matrix Metalloprotease 20 is Stimulated by Wild Type but not by 4 bp- or 2 bp- Deletion Mutant DLX3
Mutations in DLX3 are associated with both autosomal
dominant hypoplastic hypomaturation amelogenesis
imperfecta (ADHHAI) and tricho-dento-osseous (TDO)
syndrome. ADHHAI is caused by a c.561_562delCT (2bpdel
DLX3) mutation whereas TDO syndrome is associated
with a c.571_574delGGGG (4bp-del DLX3) mutation.
However, although the causal relationships between DLX3
and an enamel phenotype have been established, the
pathophysiological role of DLX3 mutations in enamel
development has not yet been clarified. In our current study,
we prepared expression vectors for wild type and deletion
mutant DLX3 products (4bp-del DLX3, 2bp-del DLX3) and
examined the effects of their overexpression on the
expression of the enamel matrix proteins and proteases.
Wild type DLX3 enhanced the expression of matrix
metalloprotease 20 (MMP20) mRNA and protein in murine
ameloblast-like cells. However, neither a 4bp-del nor 2bpdel
DLX3 increased MMP20 expression. Wild type DLX3,
but not the above DLX3 mutants, also increased the activity
of reporters containing 1.5 kb or 0.5 kb of the MMP20
promoter. An examination of protein stability showed that
the half-life of wild type DLX3 protein was less than 12 h
whilst that of both deletion mutants was longer than 24 h.
Endogenous Dlx3 was also found to be continuously
expressed during ameloblast differentiation. Since
inactivating mutations in the gene encoding MMP20 are
associated with amelogenesis imperfecta, the inability of
4bp-del or 2bp-del DLX3 to induce MMP20 expression
suggests a possible involvement of such mutations in the enamel phenotype associated with TDO syndrome or

Photo-patternable and transparent films using cellulose nanofibers for stretchable origami electronics
Substantial progress in flexible or stretchable electronics over the past decade has extensively impacted various technologies such as wearable devices, displays and automotive electronics for smart cars. An important challenge is the reliability of these deformable devices under thermal stress. Different coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) between plastic substrates and the device components, which include multiple inorganic layers of metals or ceramics, induce thermal stress in the devices during fabrication processes or long-term operations with repetitions of thermal cyclic loading-unloading, leading to device failure and reliability degradation. Here, we report an unconventional approach to form photo-patternable, transparent cellulose nanofiber (CNF) hybrid films as flexible and stretchable substrates to improve device reliability using simultaneous electrospinning and spraying. The electrospun polymeric backbones and sprayed CNF fillers enable the resulting hybrid structure to be photolithographically patternable as a negative photoresist and thermally and mechanically stable, presenting outstanding optical transparency and low CTE. We also formed stretchable origami substrates using the CNF hybrid that are composed of rigid support fixtures and elastomeric joints, exploiting the photo-patternability. A demonstration of transparent organic light-emitting diodes and touchscreen panels on the hybrid film suggests its potential for use in next-generation electronics.ope
Occult bacteremia in children with simple febrile seizure in the post-pneumococcal conjugate vaccine era
Purpose The authors aimed to investigate the utility of blood culture (BC) for children with simple febrile seizure (SFS) in the emergency department (ED) in the post-10/13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) era. Methods This study was performed at the ED of a tertiary care university-affiliated women and children’s hospital, and involved 3,237 previously healthy children aged 6-60 months who visited the ED with SFS from January 2013 through December 2017. The SFS was defined according to the International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision codes related to seizure. The children were divided into 2 groups according to the vaccination rates of the period of their visit: the 70-PCV (70%, 2013-2014) and 97-PCV (97%, 2015-2017) groups. The primary outcome was the yield, defined as a true positivity of BC. In addition, we collected information on baseline characteristics, ED length of stay, inflammatory biomarkers, and ED outcomes. Results Of the 1,578 children with SFS who underwent BC, 1,357 belonged to the 97-PCV group. The median age of the study population was 22 months (interquartile range, 16.0-30.0), and 935 children (59.3%) were boys. Of the 41 children (2.6%) with positive BC results, 3 had the yield (0.2%): Staphylococcus aureus in 2 children and Streptococcus pneumoniae in the other. All 3 children belonged to the 97-PCV group. There were 38 contaminated BCs (2.4%; 95% confidence interval, 1.6%-3.2%). The 97-PCV group showed a shorter median ED length of stay (166.0 minutes [108.0-279.5] vs. 143.0 [109.5-209.5]; P = 0.010) and a lower rate of hospitalization (39.4% vs. 12.8%; P < 0.001). No differences between the 2 groups were found in the baseline characteristics and biomarkers. Conclusion This study suggests a low utility of BC in previously healthy children with SFS in emergency settings in the post-10/13-valent PCV era
Cancer Statistics in Korea: Incidence, Mortality, Survival, and Prevalence in 2021
PURPOSE: The current study provides national cancer statistics and their secular trends in Korea, including incidence, mortality, survival, and prevalence in 2021.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Incidence, survival, and prevalence rates of cancer were calculated using the Korea National Cancer Incidence Database, from 1999 to 2021, with survival follow-up until December 31, 2022. Deaths from cancer were assessed using causes-of-death data obtained from Statistics Korea.
RESULTS: The number of new cancer diagnoses in 2021 increased by 27,002 cases (10.8%) compared to 2020. In 2021, newly diagnosed cancer cases and deaths from cancer were reported as 277,523 (age-standardized rate [ASR], 289.3 per 100,000) and 82,688 (ASR, 67.6 per 100,000), respectively. The overall cancer incidence rates increased by 3.3% annually from 1999 to 2012, and decreased by 5.3% from 2012 to 2015, thereafter, followed by non-significant changes. Cancer mortality rates have been decreasing since 2002, with more rapid decline in recent years (annual decrease of 2.8% from 2002 to 2013; 3.2% from 2013 to 2021). The 5-year relative survival between 2017 and 2021 was 72.1%, which contributed to prevalent cases reaching over 2.4 million in 2021.
CONCLUSION: In 2021, the number of newly diagnosed cancer patients increased as healthcare utilization recovered from the coronavirus disease 2019-related declines of 2020. Revised cancer registration guidelines expanded the registration scope, particularly for stomach and colorectal cancer. Survival rates have improved over the years, leading to a growing population of cancer survivors, necessitating a comprehensive cancer control strategy. The long-term impact of the pandemic on cancer statistics requires future investigation
Regional Disparities in Major Cancer Incidence in Korea, 1999–2018
OBJECTIVES: This study investigated regional disparities in the incidence of 8 major cancers at the municipal level in Korea during 1999-2018 and evaluated the presence or absence of hot spots of cancer clusters during 2014-2018.
METHODS: The Korea National Cancer Incidence Database was used. Age-standardized incidence rates were calculated by gender and region at the municipal level for 4 periods of 5 years and 8 cancer types. Regional disparities were calculated as both absolute and relative measures. The possibility of clusters was examined using global Moran\u27s I with a spatial weight matrix based on adjacency or distance.
RESULTS: Regional disparities varied depending on cancer type and gender during the 20-year study period. For men, the regional disparities of stomach, colon and rectum, lung, and liver cancer declined, and those of thyroid and prostate cancer recently decreased, despite an overall increasing incidence. For women, regional disparities in stomach, colon and rectum, lung, liver, and cervical cancer declined, that of thyroid cancer recently decreased, despite an overall increasing incidence, and that of breast cancer steadily increased. In 2014-2018, breast cancer (I, 0.61; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.53 to 0.70) showed a high probability of cancer clusters in women, and liver cancer (I, 0.48; 95% CI, 0.40 to 0.56) showed a high probability of cancer clusters in men.
CONCLUSIONS: Disparities in cancer incidence that were not seen at the national level were discovered at the municipal level. These results could provide important directions for planning and implementing local cancer policies
Unusual Cause of Acute Right Ventricular Dysfunction: Rapid Progression of Superior Vena Cava Aneurysm Complicated by Thrombosis and Pulmonary Thromboembolism
Aneurysms of the major thoracic veins are rare. They are usually asymptomatic and thus treated conservatively. We report an extremely rare case of rapidly progressing superior vena cava (SVC) aneurysm complicated by thrombosis and acute pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) with right ventricular dysfunction. Thrombolytic therapy for hemodynamically significant acute PTE was harmful to the patient in the present case, because it induced further thrombosis and mobilization of the thrombi within the aneurysm, subsequently causing de novo PTE. Surgical aneurysmectomy combined with pulmonary artery embolectomy would be a treatment of choice in patients with SVC aneurysm complicated by acute PTE
A New Onset of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Developed After Bee Venom Therapy
Lupus is a systemic autoimmune disease of an unknown origin, and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can be triggered by numerous stimuli. Bee venom therapy is an alternative therapy that is believed to be effective for various kinds of arthritis. We present here a case of a 49-year-old female who experienced a new onset lupus after undergoing bee venom therapy, and this looked like a case of angioedema. The patient was successfully treated with high dose steroids and antimalarial drugs. We discuss the possibility of bee venom contributing to the development of SLE, and we suggest that such treatment should be avoided in patients with lupus
Observation of the orbital Hall effect in a light metal Ti
The orbital angular momentum is a core ingredient of orbital magnetism, spin
Hall effect, giant Rashba spin splitting, orbital Edelstein effect, and
spin-orbit torque. However, its experimental detection is tricky. In
particular, direct detection of the orbital Hall effect remains elusive despite
its importance for electrical control of magnetic nanodevices. Here we report
the direct observation of the orbital Hall effect in a light metal Ti. The Kerr
rotation by the accumulated orbital magnetic moment is measured at Ti surfaces,
whose result agrees with theoretical calculations semiquantitatively and is
supported by the orbital torque measurement in Ti-based magnetic
heterostructures. The results confirm the electron orbital angular momentum as
an essential dynamic degree of freedom, which may provide a novel mechanism for
the electric control of magnetism. The results may also deepen the
understanding of spin, valley, phonon, and magnon dynamics coupled with orbital
dynamics
