The U.S. Federal Green Building Policy

    Get PDF
On January 24th, 2007, President George W. Bush signed Executive Order 13,423, “Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management.” The Executive Order requires federal agencies to meet the standards of green buildings, and “lead by example” in promoting green buildings in the United States. The U.S. federal government, however, seems to have been “led by examples” of the states, industry, and the consumers

Searching for a Voice: The Indigenous People in Polar Regions

Indigenous people in Arctic observe and experience climate change first-hand. They notice the change in weather and glaciers and notice the changes in the group size or migration routes of certain species affected by climate change. Indigenous people are also a source of traditional knowledge as they have responded to major climatic and environmental changes by altering group sizes, relocating, and being flexible with seasonal cycles in hunting or employment. For example, the Inuit hunters have proved to be capable of identifying the new travel routes of species such as geese and caribou as they shift their migration in response to the climate change. However, the indigenous people have very limited opportunity to effectively voice their opinions in international dialogue on environment

Lexical Knowledge and Korean EFL Learners' Vocabulary Acquisition

    Get PDF
This paper investigated the effects of two types of lexical knowledge, knowledge of meaning and knowledge of form, on the process of Korean EFL learners' vocabulary learning. For more precise description of the learning process, this research also adopted a lexical unit suggested by Cruse (1986) as the linguistic primary unit, which is a more functionally differentiated unit than a word. With test materials chosen through pretests, one hundred fifty two intermediate level students attending Seoul National University participated in three experiment to examine whether or not knowledge of meaning and knowledge of form makes it easer for L2 learners to acquire new lexical units. The results showed that overall knowledge of meaning and knowledge of form significantly contributes to L2 learners' acquisition of new lexical units. However, knowledge of form is helpful for L2 learner's short-term memory, on the other hand, knowledge of meaning is beneficial to their long-term memory as well as short-term memory in learning vocabulary.Supported by the Grant for the Reform of University Education under the BK21 Project of SNU

Review Article on "The Effectiveness of Teacher's Written Feedback on L2 Writing"

This paper reviews previous studies on the effectiveness of three types of teacher's written feedback: form-focused, content-based, and integrated feedback. More specifically, the study pursues the following issues: Why certain types of feedback are put forth, how they are performed in students' writing, and what the main issues are in this field. Through the extensive review on the issues suggested, this study attempts to help L2 teachers choose from different types of written feedback considering the advantages and disadvantages of each feedback type to more effectively improve their students' writing skills

Is Genuine Communication Possible for Saul Bellow? - A Reading of The Dean's December

    Get PDF
Saul Bellow(1915-) received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1976, which firmly established his literary reputation in the eyes of the critics. After receiving the honor he felt that he now had to fulfil even greater expectations than before. Few American authors have been awarded the Nobel Prize and those who received it generally saw it as a sign that their best creative days had ended. It may have been this sense that the prize is somehow a blight on the career of a writer that caused a slow down in Bellow's production of fiction fiction. His next novel, The Dean's December, did not appear until 1982. It wan't well received; many critics wondered whether Bellow had, indeed, gone into a decline. Fearing for his reputation, but with the desire for an adequate form of representation to communicate of his world to readers, Bellow was engaged with the problem of what kind of writer he could aspire to be in the postmodern world. As are most writers, he is interested in the political and social context of literature. The Dean's December is his most political novel. In it he is wrestling with his major preoccupation: What is it that enables us to communicate, to transmit our hearts

Comparative analysis of the JAK/STAT signaling through erythropoietin receptor and thrombopoietin receptor using a systems approach

Abstract

Background

The Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) pathway is one of the most important targets for myeloproliferative disorder (MPD). Although several efforts toward modeling the pathway using systems biology have been successful, the pathway was not fully investigated in regard to understanding pathological context and to model receptor kinetics and mutation effects.

Results

We have performed modeling and simulation studies of the JAK/STAT pathway, including the kinetics of two associated receptors (the erythropoietin receptor and thrombopoietin receptor) with the wild type and a recently reported mutation (JAK2V617F) of the JAK2 protein.

Conclusion

We found that the different kinetics of those two receptors might be important factors that affect the sensitivity of JAK/STAT signaling to the mutation effect. In addition, our simulation results support clinically observed pathological differences between the two subtypes of MPD with respect to the JAK2V617F mutation.</p
