Christian praxis economic justice
The major aim of this thesis is to formulate the principles of economic justice and propose a just economic system which would critically guide Christian praxis in a secular pluralist society in general and Korea in particular. It is done through a critical dialogue with major Western and Latin American theologians and thinkers. First we have a brief historical overview of the socio-political condition in Korea and the Korean Protestant Church's response to show the importance of the question of economic justice for Korean Christians and the impasse in which they find themselves (Chapter 1). Our critical dialogue with the Western and Latin American thinkers starts with the consideration of the most fundamental issue of theological method (chapter 2). We establish our own theological method which involves the reciprocal relationship between theory and praxis at all levels of enquiry and the reciprocal interactions between philosophical, socio-analytic and hermeneutic mediations. After establishing the legitimacy of the notion of economic justice (chapter 3), we formulate our own principles of economic justice employing the philosophical method of hypothetical reflective equilibrium (chapter 4). We then propose democratic communitarianism as an alternative just economic system through a critical appropriation of the Marxist theory of exploitation and capitalist mainstream economics (chapter 5). We then elaborate theological views of the person, society (chapter 6) and the principles of economic justice underpinning the preceding discussions (chapter 7). Finally we return to our own context, Korea, to show the relevance of democratic communitarianism and its corresponding principles of economic justice (chapter 8)
Corrections to the Nuclear Axial Vector Coupling in a Nuclear Medium
We examine further corrections to the time component of the axial vector
coupling constant in a nuclear medium. The dominant correction is that of
exchange currents. The corrections we examine make the remaining discrepancy
worse.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
Chlorine Abundances in Martian Meteorites
Chlorine measurements made in martian surface rocks by robotic spacecraft typically give Chlorine (Cl) abundances of approximately 0.1-0.8%. In contrast, Cl abundances in martian meteorites appear lower, although data is limited, and martian nakhlites were also subjected to Cl contamination by Mars surface brines. Chlorine abundances reported by one lab for whole rock (WR) samples of Shergotty, ALH77005, and EET79001 range 108-14 ppm, whereas Cl in nakhlites range 73-1900 ppm. Measurements of Cl in various martian weathering phases of nakhlites varied 0.04-4.7% and reveal significant concentration of Cl by martian brines Martian meteorites contain much lower Chlorine than those measured in martian surface rocks and give further confirmation that Cl in these surface rocks was introduced by brines and weathering. It has been argued that Cl is twice as effective as water in lowering the melting point and promoting melting at shallower martian depths, and that significant Cl in the shergottite source region would negate any need for significant water. However, this conclusion was based on experiments that utilized Cl concentrations more analogous to martian surface rocks than to shergottite meteorites, and may not be applicable to shergottites
Fire resistance performance of submerged floating tunnel under various fire conditions
Submerged Floating Tunnels (SFT) were researched by countries had many island as Norway, Italy,\ud
China, and Japan. Several sites were examined in China and Norway. Most of them investigated about seismic, dynamic,\ud
and collision performance. However, present researches lack to apply the construction fields, therefore, additional\ud
researches need. Fire resistance performance of the SFT is important one of the various researches. If fire break out in\ud
SFT, it is damaged by thermal loads. The damage of the SFT varies by type of fire. Structure of the SFT is able to\ud
collapse partially by fire scale and fire exposure time. For this reason, fire resistance design of the SFT must be\ud
suggested. Fire resistance performance of SFT could be investigating for fire resistance design of SFT. Fire condition\ud
could be expressed fire curves which are suggested by fire scale and fire exposure time. In this paper, temperature\ud
distributions of the SFT were investigated through FE analysis under various fire conditions. Heat transfer analysis was\ud
applied to investigate conduction of heat by fire. And there was to draw the biggest influence fire condition to the SFT\ud
from FE analysis results. Also, preliminary study was performed for fire resistance design
Enhancement of electrical properties in Al-doped ZnO films by tuning dc bias voltage during radio frequency magnetron sputtering
Al-doped ZnO (AZO) thin films were deposited at room temperature on glass substrates by rf magnetron sputtering with simultaneous dc bias through an external inductor coil. The deposition rates of AZO films deposited using simultaneous rf and dc power along with an inductor coil were 20 higher than those deposited using only rf power. The effects of simultaneous rf and dc bias voltage during the deposition of AZO films were investigated in terms of their resistivity and compressive stress. It was observed that the AZO films deposited at 120 W rf power with 600 μH inductor coil exhibit the lowest resistivity of 6.71 à 10-4 Ïṡcm. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
Scaling analysis of a divergent prefactor in the metastable lifetime of a square-lattice Ising ferromagnet at low temperatures
We examine a square-lattice nearest-neighbor Ising quantum ferromagnet
coupled to -dimensional phonon baths. Using the density-matrix equation, we
calculate the transition rates between configurations, which determines the
specific dynamic. Applying the calculated stochastic dynamic in Monte Carlo
simulations, we measure the lifetimes of the metastable state. As the magnetic
field approaches at low temperatures, the lifetime prefactor diverges
because the transition rates between certain configurations approaches zero
under these conditions. Near and zero temperature, the divergent
prefactor shows scaling behavior as a function of the field, temperature, and
the dimension of the phonon baths. With proper scaling, the simulation data at
different temperatures and for different dimensions of the baths collapse well
onto two master curves, one for and one for .Comment: published versio
Bistable Organic Memory Device with Gold Nanoparticles Embedded in a Conducting Poly(N-vinylcarbazole) Colloids Hybrid
We report on the nonvolatile memory characteristics of a bistable organic memory (BOM) device with Au nanopartides (NPs) embedded in a conducting poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) colloids hybrid layer deposited on flexible poly(ethylenete-rephthalate) (PET) substrates. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show the Au nanoparticles distributed isotropically around the surface of a PVK colloid. The average induced charge on Au nanoparticles, estimated using the C-V hysteresis curve, was large, as much as 5 holes/NP at a sweeping voltage of +/-3 V. The maximum ON/OFF ratio of the current bistability in the BOM devices was as large as 1 x 10(5). The cycling endurance tests of the ON/OFF switching exhibited a high endurance of above 1.5 x 10(5) cycles, and a high ON/OFF ratio of similar to 10(5) could be achieved consistently even after quite a long retention time of more than 1 x 10(6) s. To clarify the memory mechanism of the hole-mediated bistable organic memory device, the interactions between Au nanoparticles and poly(N-vinylcarbazole) colloids was studied by estimating the density of states and projected density of state calculations using density functional theory. Au atom interactions with a PVK unit decreased the band gap by 2.96 eV with the new induced gap states at 5.11 eV (HOMO, E(0)) and LUMO 4.30 eV and relaxed the HOMO level by 0.5 eV (E(1)). E(1) at similar to 6.2 eV is very close to the pristine HOMO, and thus the trapped hole in E(1) could move to the HOMO of pristine PVK From the experimental data and theoretical calculation, it was revealed that a low-conductivity state resulted from a hole trapping at E(o) and E(1) states and subsequent hole transportation through Fowler-Nordheim tunneling from E(1) state to Au NPs and/or interface trap states leads to a high conductivity state
Visualization of one-dimensional diffusion and spontaneous segregation of hydrogen in single crystals of VO2
Hydrogen intercalation in solids is common, complicated, and very difficult to monitor. In a new approach to the problem, we have studied the profile of hydrogen diffusion in single-crystal nanobeams and plates of VO2, exploiting the fact that hydrogen doping in this material leads to visible darkening near room temperature connected with the metal-insulator transition at 65 C. We observe hydrogen diffusion along the rutile c-axis but not perpendicular to it, making this a highly one-dimensional diffusion system. We obtain an activated diffusion coefficient ∼ 0.01 e-0.6eV/kBT cm2s-1, applicable in metallic phase. In addition, we observe dramatic supercooling of the hydrogen-induced metallic phase and spontaneous segregation of the hydrogen into stripes implying that the diffusion process is highly nonlinear, even in the absence of defects. Similar complications may occur in hydrogen motion in other materials but are not revealed by conventional measurement techniques. 2016 IOP Publishing Ltd
Modular Cosmology, Thermal Inflation, Baryogenesis and Predictions for Particle Accelerators
Modular cosmology is plagued by overproduction of unwanted relics, gravitinos
and especially moduli, at relatively low energy scales. Thermal inflation
provides a compelling solution to this moduli problem, but invalidates most
baryogenesis scenarios. We propose a simple model in which the MSSM plus
neutrino mass term is supplemented by a minimal flaton sector to
drive the thermal inflation, and make two crucial assumptions: the flaton
vacuum expectation value generates the -term of the MSSM and . The second assumption is particularly interesting in that it
violates a well known constraint, implying that there exists a nearby deep
non-MSSM vacuum, and provides a clear signature of our model which can be
tested at future particle accelerators. We show that our model leads to thermal
inflation followed by Affleck-Dine leptogenensis along the flat
direction. A key feature of our leptogenesis scenario is that the flat
direction is also induced to temporarily acquire a large value, playing a
crucial role in the leptogenesis, as well as dynamically shielding the field
configuration from the deep non-MSSM minimum, ensuring that the fields relax
into our MSSM vacuum.Comment: v3; 19 pages, 3 figures; added a reference for section
