His current work focuses on American grand strategy, causes and solutions to suicide terrorism, the logic of soft balancing in a unipolar world, and the limits and advantages of precision air power. He is the author of Dying to Win: The Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism (Random House, 2005) and Bombing to Win: Air Power and Coercion in War (Cornell, 1996). Pape's commentary on international security policy has appeared in The New York Times, Washington Post, New Republic, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times and Bulletin of Atomic Scientists as well as on Nightline, ABC News, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Anderson Cooper, CNN International, and National Public Radio. Before coming to Chicago in 1999, he taught international relations at Dartmouth College for five years.     Retreatment with interferon-alpha and ribavirin in primary interferon-alpha non-responders with chronic hepatitis C

    Background/Aims: Combination therapy with interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) plus ribavirin is more efficacious than IFN-alpha monotherapy in previously untreated patients with chronic hepatitis C and patients with IFN-alpha relapse. Only limited data are available in IFN-alpha non-responders. In a multicenter trial we therefore evaluated the efficacy of combination therapy in IFN-alpha-resistant chronic hepatitis C. Methods: Eighty-two patients (mean age 46.8 years, 54 males, 28 females) with chronic hepatitis C were treated with IFN-alpha-2a (3 x 6 MIU/week) and ribavirin (14 mg/kg daily) for 12 weeks. Thereafter, treatment was continued only in virological responders (undetectable serum HCV RNA at week 12) with an IFN-alpha dose of 3 x 3 MIU/week and without ribavirin for a further 9 months. The primary study endpoint was an undetectable HCV RNA by RT-PCR at the end of the 24-week follow-up period. Results: After 12 weeks of combination therapy, an initial virological response was observed in 29 of 82 (35.4%) patients. Due to a high breakthrough rate after IFN-a dose reduction and ribavirin discontinuation, an end-of-treatment response was only achieved in 12 of 82 (14.6%) patients. After the follow-up period, a sustained virological response was observed in 8 of 82 (9.8%) patients. Infection with HCV genotype 3 was the only pretreatment parameter, which could predict a sustained response (HCV-1, 5%; HCV-3, 57.1%; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Despite a high initial response rate of 35.4%, sustained viral clearance was achieved only in 9.8% of the retreated primary IFN-alpha non-responders. Higher IFN-alpha induction and maintenance dose, as well as prolonged ribavirin treatment may possibly increase the virological response rates in non-responders, particularly in those infected by HCV-1

    Abstract: A study of the biology and ecology of Bat Cave, Grand Canyon National Park, was conducted during a series of four expeditions to the cave between 1994 and 2001. A total of 27 taxa, including 5 vertebrate and 22 macro-invertebrate species, were identified as elements of the ecology of the cave. Bat Cave is the type locality for Eschatomoxys pholeter Thomas and Pape (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) and an undescribed genus of tineid moth, both of which were discovered during this study. Bat Cave has the most species-rich macro-invertebrate ecology currently known in a cave in the park

    International audienceOver the past 25 years, underground mine flooding in the lorraine iron Basin (France) has resulted in a high concentration of dissolved sulphate and have made the water unsuitable for human consumption. this problematic issue has led to the development of numerical tools to support waterresource management in mining contexts. as water flows mainly in galleries and collapsed zones, we consider the flooded mine as a network of pipes and tanks. the software used for simulating flow andreactive transport in this network is the ePanet 2 code. a simplified sulphate dissolution-precipitation model, based on previous works, is included as source/sink in the tanks. Flow rates are calculated by processing data records with a rainfall-discharge model. the simulator gives good agreement between the calculated and observed sulphate concentrations

    Juveniles of numerous commercial marine flatfish species use coastal and estuarine habitats as nurseries. Hence, they are likely to be exposed to a number of anthropogenic stressors such as accidental and chronic exposure to chemical contaminants. Little is known about their response to such pollutants at the individual level and about the consequences on their population dynamics. Mesocosm experiments were conducted to determine whether short (24 h) but high exposure to petroleum hydrocarbons (1/1000 v: v water: fuel), similar to what happened after an oil spill on coastal areas, af fects survival and biological (growth, body condition and lipid reserve) performances of juvenile common sole, which live on near shore and estuarine nursery grounds. Results demonstrated that this type of exposure significantly reduce survival, growth (size, recent otolith increment and body condition), and especially ener gy storage (triacylglycerol to free sterol ratio) of the juvenile fish on the medium-term (three months after the exposure).These medium-term consequences affect future recruitment of this long- lived species

    Background: Infections with Panton-Valentine leucocidin (PVL) positive Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) are often complicated by necrotizing pneumonia, myositis and osteomyelitis. Case Description: We describe a 50 years old, previously healthy male which presented a severe infection with PVL-positive, methicillin- susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) in his left knee after returning from China. He developed a fulminant sepsis with necrotizing pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), acute renal failure and multiple soft tissue abscesses. Extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was needed for five days. The patient recovered after multiple surgical interventions and long-term antibiotic treatment and eventually returned to work five months after initial admission. Conclusion: While most staphylococcal skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) show a favorable outcome, SSTI caused by PVL- positive bacteria can lead to fulminant and fatal disease manifestations. Immunocompetent individuals are equally affected as immunocompromised ones. Early suspicion, surgical intervention with debridement and drainage of abscess formations are of key importance in concert with appropriate antibiotic therapy without delay.
