Serum Lp(a) Lipoprotein Levels in Patients with Atherosclerotic Occlusive Disease of the Lower Extremities
AbstractObjective to evaluate the association between Lp(a) lipoprotein levels, other serum lipids and the presence of lower limb atherosclerotic occlusive disease. Materials and methods angiographic findings in 36 patients were related to serum Lp(a). Total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and Lp(a) levels were compared with those of 73 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Results atheromatous lesions were localised in the femoropopliteal (â60%) and aortoiliac (â40%) segments. The number of stenosed arteries was â„2 and the range of stenosis severity was between 40% and 100%. There was a significant increase in serum Lp(a) (p= 0.000001) and a decrease in serum HDL (p= 0.000009) levels in patients compared to controls. No difference was observed in total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol or triglyceride. However, the ratio of total cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol was significantly higher (p= 0.005) in patients. Conclusion a dyslipidaemic serum profile, characterised by increased Lp(a) levels and decreased HDL-cholesterol levels, is associated with atherosclerotic occlusive disease of the lower extremities
Demand in the electricity market: analysis using big data
The traditional business model of energy companies is changing in recent years. The introduction of smart meters has led to an exponential increase in the volume of data available, and their analysis can help find consumption patterns among electric customers to reduce costs and protect the environment. Power plants generate electricity to cover peak consumption at specific times. A set of techniques called âdemand responseâ tries to solve this problem using artificial intelligence proposals. This document proposes a method for processing large volumes of data such as those generated by smart meters. Both for the preprocessing and for the optimization and realization of this analysis big data techniques are used. Specifically, a distributed version of the k-means algorithm and several indices of internal validation of clustering for big data in Spark. The source data correspond to the consumption of electric customers in Bogota, Colombia during the year 2018. The analysis carried out in this study about consumers helps their characterization. This greater knowledge about consumer habits and types of customers can enhance the work of utilities

An Assessment of Mobile Predator Populations along Shallow and Mesophotic Depth Gradients in the Hawaiian Archipelago.
Large-bodied coral reef roving predators (sharks, jacks, snappers) are largely considered to be depleted around human population centers. In the Hawaiian Archipelago, supporting evidence is primarily derived from underwater visual censuses in shallow waters (=30?m). However, while many roving predators are present or potentially more abundant in deeper strata (30-100?m+), distributional information remains sparse. To partially fill that knowledge gap, we conducted surveys in the remote Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) and populated Main Hawaiian Islands (MHI) from 2012-2014 using baited remote underwater stereo-video. Surveys between 0-100?m found considerable roving predator community dissimilarities between regions, marked conspicuous changes in species abundances with increasing depth, and largely corroborated patterns documented during shallow water underwater visual censuses, with up to an order of magnitude more jacks and five times more sharks sampled in the NWHI compared to the MHI. Additionally, several species were significantly more abundant and larger in mesophotic versus shallow depths, which remains particularly suggestive of deep-water refugia effects in the MHI. Stereo-video extends the depth range of current roving predator surveys in a more robust manner than was previously available, and appears to be well-suited for large-scale roving predator work in the Hawaiian Archipelago
The Lagoon at Caroline/Millennium Atoll, Republic of Kiribati: Natural History of a Nearly Pristine Ecosystem
A series of surveys were carried out to characterize the physical and biological parameters of the Millennium Atoll lagoon during a research expedition in April of 2009. Millennium is a remote coral atoll in the Central Pacific belonging to the Republic of Kiribati, and a member of the Southern Line Islands chain. The atoll is among the few remaining coral reef ecosystems that are relatively pristine. The lagoon is highly enclosed, and was characterized by reticulate patch and line reefs throughout the center of the lagoon as well as perimeter reefs around the rim of the atoll. The depth reached a maximum of 33.3 m in the central region of the lagoon, and averaged between 8.8 and 13.7 m in most of the pools. The deepest areas were found to harbor large platforms of Favia matthaii, which presumably provided a base upon which the dominant corals (Acropora spp.) grew to form the reticulate reef structure. The benthic algal communities consisted mainly of crustose coralline algae (CCA), microfilamentous turf algae and isolated patches of Halimeda spp. and Caulerpa spp. Fish species richness in the lagoon was half of that observed on the adjacent fore reef. The lagoon is likely an important nursery habitat for a number of important fisheries species including the blacktip reef shark and Napoleon wrasse, which are heavily exploited elsewhere around the world but were common in the lagoon at Millennium. The lagoon also supports an abundance of giant clams (Tridacna maxima). Millennium lagoon provides an excellent reference of a relatively undisturbed coral atoll. As with most coral reefs around the world, the lagoon communities of Millennium may be threatened by climate change and associated warming, acidification and sea level rise, as well as sporadic local resource exploitation which is difficult to monitor and enforce because of the atoll's remote location. While the remote nature of Millennium has allowed it to remain one of the few nearly pristine coral reef ecosystems in the world, it is imperative that this ecosystem receives protection so that it may survive for future generations
FRW Cosmologies with Adiabatic Matter Creation
Some properties of cosmological models with matter creation are investigated
in the framework of the Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) line element. For
adiabatic matter creation, as developed by Prigogine and coworkers, we derive a
simple expression relating the particle number density and energy density
which holds regardless of the matter creation rate. The conditions to
generate inflation are discussed and by considering the natural
phenomenological matter creation rate , where is a
pure number of the order of unity and is the Hubble parameter, a minimally
modified hot big-bang model is proposed. The dynamic properties of such models
can be deduced from the standard ones simply by replacing the adiabatic index
of the equation of state by an effective parameter . The thermodynamic behavior is determined and it is also
shown that ages large enough to agree with observations are obtained even given

Diving into the vertical dimension of elasmobranch movement ecology
Knowledge of the three-dimensional movement patterns of elasmobranchs is vital to understand their ecological roles and exposure to anthropogenic pressures. To date, comparative studies among species at global scales have mostly focused on horizontal movements. Our study addresses the knowledge gap of vertical movements by compiling the first global synthesis of vertical habitat use by elasmobranchs from data obtained by deployment of 989 biotelemetry tags on 38 elasmobranch species. Elasmobranchs displayed high intra- and interspecific variability in vertical movement patterns. Substantial vertical overlap was observed for many epipelagic elasmobranchs, indicating an increased likelihood to display spatial overlap, biologically interact, and share similar risk to anthropogenic threats that vary on a vertical gradient. We highlight the critical next steps toward incorporating vertical movement into global management and monitoring strategies for elasmobranchs, emphasizing the need to address geographic and taxonomic biases in deployments and to concurrently consider both horizontal and vertical movements
Combined expression of p53, Bcl-2, and p21WAF-1 proteins in lung cancer and premalignant lesions: Association with clinical characteristics
We examined p53, p21WAF-1, and Bcl-2 protein expression in malignant and nonmalignant bronchial specimens obtained during bronchoscopy from 60 lung cancer patients. Twenty-six (43.3%), 36 (60%), and 20 (33.3%) of the tumors were p53, p21WAF-1, and Bcl-2 positive, respectively. High-level p53 and Bcl-2 expression characterized advanced preneoplastic lesions, while hyperplasias, squamous metaplasias, and mild dysplasias exhibited low levels of expression. There was no difference between early and advanced preneoplastic lesions in the level of p21WAf-1, expression. A history of heavy smoking was associated with p21WAF-1, expression in preneoplastic lesions (p = 0.022) and tumors (p = 0.032). p53(-)/p21WAF-1(+ +)/bcl-2(-) was the only significant independent predictor of lower clinical stage (OR: 0.88, p = 0.038). In univariate analysis, survival of NSCLC patients was affected by disease stage (p < 0.001) and tumor histology (p = 0.018). While single-protein expression was not associated with prognosis, the combined immunophenotype p53(-)/p21WAF-1(+ +)/bcl-2(-) predicted longer survival (p = 0.03). In multivariate analysis, only the TNM stage was found to be a prognostic factor for NSCLC. We conclude that p53 and Bcl-2 alterations may happen early in bronchial carcinogenesis and that absence of these alterations in combination with p21WAF-1, overexpression may be associated with a less aggressive tumor behavior
