Dynamics of Passive-Scalar Turbulence
We present the first study of the dynamic scaling or multiscaling of
passive-scalar and passive-vector turbulence. For the Kraichnan version of
passive-scalar and passive-vector turbulence we show analytically, in both
Eulerian and quasi-Lagrangian frameworks, that simple dynamic scaling is
obtained but with different dynamic exponents. By developing the multifractal
model we show that dynamic multiscaling occurs in passive-scalar turbulence
only if the advecting velocity field is itself multifractal. We substantiate
our results by detailed numerical simulations in shell models of passive-scalar

Surface critical behavior of bcc binary alloys
The surface critical behavior of bcc binary alloys undergoing a continuous
B2-A2 order-disorder transition is investigated in the mean-field (MF)
approximation. Our main aim is to provide clear evidence for the fact that
surfaces which break the two-sublattice symmetry generically display the
critical behavior of the NORMAL transition, whereas symmetry-preserving
surfaces exhibit ORDINARY surface critical behavior. To this end we analyze the
lattice MF equations for both types of surfaces in terms of nonlinear
symplectic maps and derive a Ginzburg-Landau model for the symmetry-breaking
(100) surface. The crucial feature of the continuum model is the emergence of
an EFFECTIVE ORDERING (``staggered'') SURFACE FIELD, which depends on
temperature and the other lattice model parameters, and which explains the

Turbulence and Multiscaling in the Randomly Forced Navier Stokes Equation
We present an extensive pseudospectral study of the randomly forced
Navier-Stokes equation (RFNSE) stirred by a stochastic force with zero mean and
a variance , where is the wavevector and the dimension . We present the first evidence for multiscaling of velocity structure
functions in this model for . We extract the multiscaling exponent
ratios by using extended self similarity (ESS), examine their
dependence on , and show that, if , they are in agreement with those
obtained for the deterministically forced Navier-Stokes equation (NSE). We
also show that well-defined vortex filaments, which appear clearly in studies

Buttressing staples with cholecyst-derived extracellular matrix (CEM) reinforces staple lines in an ex vivo peristaltic inflation model

Copyright @ Springer Science + Business Media, LLC 2008Background - Staple line leakage and bleeding are the most common problems associated with the use of surgical staplers for gastrointestinal resection and anastomotic procedures. These complications can be reduced by reinforcing the staple lines with buttressing materials. The current study reports the potential use of cholecyst-derived extracellular matrix (CEM) in non-crosslinked (NCEM) and crosslinked (XCEM) forms, and compares their mechanical performance with clinically available buttress materials [small intestinal submucosa (SIS) and bovine pericardium (BP)] in an ex vivo small intestine model.
Methods - Three crosslinked CEM variants (XCEM0005, XCEM001, and XCEM0033) with different degree of crosslinking were produced. An ex vivo peristaltic inflation model was established. Porcine small intestine segments were stapled on one end, using buttressed or non-buttressed surgical staplers. The opened, non-stapled ends were connected to a peristaltic pump and pressure transducer and sealed. The staple lines were then exposed to increased intraluminal pressure in a peristaltic manner. Both the leak and burst pressures of the test specimens were recorded.
Results - The leak pressures observed for non-crosslinked NCEM (137.8 ± 22.3 mmHg), crosslinked XCEM0005 (109.1 ± 14.1 mmHg), XCEM001 (150.1 ± 16.0 mmHg), XCEM0033 (98.8 ± 10.5 mmHg) reinforced staple lines were significantly higher when compared to non-buttressed control (28.3 ± 10.8 mmHg) and SIS (one and four layers) (62.6 ± 11.8 and 57.6 ± 12.3 mmHg, respectively) buttressed staple lines. NCEM and XCEM were comparable to that observed for BP buttressed staple lines (138.8 ± 3.6 mmHg). Only specimens with reinforced staple lines were able to achieve high intraluminal pressures (ruptured at the intestinal mesentery), indicating that buttress reinforcements were able to withstand pressure higher than that of natural tissue (physiological failure).
Conclusions - These findings suggest that the use of CEM and XCEM as buttressing materials is associated with reinforced staple lines and increased leak pressures when compared to non-buttressed staple lines. CEM and XCEM were found to perform comparably with clinically available buttress materials in this ex vivo model.Enterprise Irelan
Trends of HIV-related cancer mortality between 2001 and 2018: an observational analysis
The burden of AIDS-defining cancers has remained relatively steady for the past two decades, whilst the burden of non-AIDS-defining cancer has increased. Here, we conduct a study to describe mortality trends attributed to HIV-associated cancers in 31 countries. We extracted HIV-related cancer mortality data from 2001 to 2018 from the World Health Organization Mortality Database. We computed age-standardized death rates (ASDRs) per 100,000 population using the World Standard Population. Data were visualized using Locally Weighted Scatterplot Smoothing (LOWESS). Data for females were available for 25 countries. Overall, there has been a decrease in mortality attributed to HIV-associated cancers among most of the countries. In total, 18 out of 31 countries (58.0%) and 14 out of 25 countries (56.0%) showed decreases in male and female mortality, respectively. An increasing mortality trend was observed in many developing countries, such as Malaysia and Thailand, and some developed countries, such as the United Kingdom. Malaysia had the greatest increase in male mortality (+495.0%), and Canada had the greatest decrease (-88.5%). Thailand had the greatest increase in female mortality (+540.0%), and Germany had the greatest decrease (-86.0%). At the endpoint year, South Africa had the highest ASDRs for both males (16.8/100,000) and females (19.2/100,000). The lowest was in Japan for males (0.07/100,000) and Egypt for females (0.028/100,000)
Features of mammalian microRNA promoters emerge from polymerase II chromatin immunoprecipitation data
Background: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short, non-coding RNA regulators of protein coding genes. miRNAs play a very important role in diverse biological processes and various diseases. Many algorithms are able to predict miRNA genes and their targets, but their transcription regulation is still under investigation. It is generally believed that intragenic miRNAs (located in introns or exons of protein coding genes) are co-transcribed with their host genes and most intergenic miRNAs transcribed from their own RNA polymerase II (Pol II) promoter. However, the length of the primary transcripts and promoter organization is currently unknown. Methodology: We performed Pol II chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP)-chip using a custom array surrounding regions of known miRNA genes. To identify the true core transcription start sites of the miRNA genes we developed a new tool (CPPP). We showed that miRNA genes can be transcribed from promoters located several kilobases away and that their promoters share the same general features as those of protein coding genes. Finally, we found evidence that as many as 26% of the intragenic miRNAs may be transcribed from their own unique promoters. Surface and capillary transitions in an associating binary mixture model
We investigate the phase diagram of a two-component associating fluid mixture
in the presence of selectively adsorbing substrates. The mixture is
characterized by a bulk phase diagram which displays peculiar features such as
closed loops of immiscibility. The presence of the substrates may interfere the
physical mechanism involved in the appearance of these phase diagrams, leading
to an enhanced tendency to phase separate below the lower critical solution
point. Three different cases are considered: a planar solid surface in contact
with a bulk fluid, while the other two represent two models of porous systems,
namely a slit and an array on infinitely long parallel cylinders. We confirm
that surface transitions, as well as capillary transitions for a large
area/volume ratio, are stabilized in the one-phase region. Applicability of our

Human surfactant protein D alters oxidative stress and HMGA1 expression to induce p53 apoptotic pathway in eosinophil leukemic cell line

inflammation. Immune related functions regulated by SP-D include agglutination of pathogens, phagocytosis,
oxidative burst, antigen presentation, T lymphocyte proliferation, cytokine secretion, induction of apoptosis and
clearance of apoptotic cells. The present study unravels a novel ability of SP-D to reduce the viability of leukemic
cells (eosinophilic leukemic cell line, AML14.3D10; acute myeloid leukemia cell line, THP-1; acute lymphoid leukemia
cell lines, Jurkat, Raji; and human breast epithelial cell line, MCF-7), and explains the underlying mechanisms. SP-D
and a recombinant fragment of human SP-D (rhSP-D) induced G2/M phase cell cycle arrest, and dose and timedependent
apoptosis in the AML14.3D10 eosinophilic leukemia cell line. Levels of various apoptotic markers viz.
activated p53, cleaved caspase-9 and PARP, along with G2/M checkpoints (p21 and Tyr15 phosphorylation of cdc2)
showed significant increase in these cells. We further attempted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of rhSP-D
induced apoptosis using proteomic analysis. This approach identified large scale molecular changes initiated by SPD
in a human cell for the first time. Among others, the proteomics analysis highlighted a decreased expression of
survival related proteins such as HMGA1, overexpression of proteins to protect the cells from oxidative burst, while a
drastic decrease in mitochondrial antioxidant defense system. rhSP-D mediated enhanced oxidative burst in
AML14.3D10 cells was confirmed, while antioxidant, N-acetyl-L-cysteine, abrogated the rhSP-D induced apoptosis.
The rhSP-D mediated reduced viability was specific to the cancer cell lines and viability of human PBMCs from
healthy controls was not affected. The study suggests involvement of SP-D in host’s immunosurveillance and
therapeutic potential of rhSP-D in the eosinophilic leukemia and cancers of other origins.Department of Biotechnology, Indi
Nonequilibrium relaxation of the two-dimensional Ising model: Series-expansion and Monte Carlo studies
We study the critical relaxation of the two-dimensional Ising model from a
fully ordered configuration by series expansion in time t and by Monte Carlo
simulation. Both the magnetization (m) and energy series are obtained up to
12-th order. An accurate estimate from series analysis for the dynamical
critical exponent z is difficult but compatible with 2.2. We also use Monte
Carlo simulation to determine an effective exponent, z_eff(t) = - {1/8} d ln t
/d ln m, directly from a ratio of three-spin correlation to m. Extrapolation to
t = infinity leads to an estimate z = 2.169 +/- 0.003.Comment: 9 pages including 2 figure

We present an introductory overview of several challenging problems in the
statistical characterisation of turbulence. We provide examples from fluid
turbulence in three and two dimensions, from the turbulent advection of passive
scalars, turbulence in the one-dimensional Burgers equation, and fluid
