    Fast Iterative Reconstruction for Multi-spectral CT by a Schmidt Orthogonal Modification Algorithm (SOMA)

    Multi-spectral CT (MSCT) is increasingly used in industrial non-destructive testing and medical diagnosis because of its outstanding performance like material distinguishability. The process of obtaining MSCT data can be modeled as nonlinear equations and the basis material decomposition comes down to the inverse problem of the nonlinear equations. For different spectra data, geometric inconsistent parameters cause geometrical inconsistent rays, which will lead to mismatched nonlinear equations. How to solve the mismatched nonlinear equations accurately and quickly is a hot issue. This paper proposes a general iterative method to invert the mismatched nonlinear equations and develops Schmidt orthogonalization to accelerate convergence. The validity of the proposed method is verified by MSCT basis material decomposition experiments. The results show that the proposed method can decompose the basis material images accurately and improve the convergence speed greatly

    Can HIV service data be used for surveillance purposes?: a case study in Guangzhou, China

    Abstract Background Timely monitoring HIV epidemic among key populations is a formidable challenge. This study aimed to evaluate the agreement between data collected from an enhanced HIV sentinel surveillance (HSS+) and an HIV service, and to discuss whether testing service data can be used for surveillance purposes. Methods The HSS+ data were collected from HIV sentinel surveillance conducted annually among men who have sex with men (MSM) between 2009 and 2013 in Guangzhou, China. The HIV service data were obtained from the China-Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Cooperation Program on HIV Prevention and Care (China-Gates HIV Program) in Guangzhou during the same period. The China-Gates HIV Program aimed to increase HIV counseling and testing among MSM. We compared demographic characteristics, condom use, HIV testing history, and the HIV status among individuals in these two datasets. The Armitage-trend test was used to evaluate the HIV epidemic and behaviors of the participants in the two datasets over the study period. Results Overall, a total of 2224 and 5311 MSM were included in the surveillance and service datasets, respectively. The majority of participants in the two datasets were between 20 and 29 years old, at least attended college, and had never been married. However, socio-demographic characteristics varied slightly between the two datasets. Similar trends were observed for the HIV epidemic in these two datasets. The surveillance dataset indicated that HIV prevalence increased from 3.9% in 2009 to 11.4% in 2013 (P-value for trend < 0.001), while data from the HIV service dataset indicated that MSM HIV prevalence during this same period increased from 6.2 to 8.9% (P-value for trend = 0.025). The rates of condom use were similar between the two datasets and remained consistent throughout the study period. Conclusion HIV service data can complement existing HIV surveillance systems for MSM in China, though it may underestimate the HIV prevalence (HSS+ data contains people whose status is already know, while service data contains people who were initially negative or people of unknown status). HIV service data can be used for surveillance purposes, when prerequisite variables are collected from a large number people, if the quality assessment is conducted

    Immune Protection Induced on Day 10 Following Administration of the 2009 A/H1N1 Pandemic Influenza Vaccine

    BACKGROUND: The 2009 swine-origin influenza virus (S-OIV) H1N1 pandemic has caused more than 18,000 deaths worldwide. Vaccines against the 2009 A/H1N1 influenza virus are useful for preventing infection and controlling the pandemic. The kinetics of the immune response following vaccination with the 2009 A/H1N1 influenza vaccine need further investigation. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: 58 volunteers were vaccinated with a 2009 A/H1N1 pandemic influenza monovalent split-virus vaccine (15 µg, single-dose). The sera were collected before Day 0 (pre-vaccination) and on Days 3, 5, 10, 14, 21, 30, 45 and 60 post vaccination. Specific antibody responses induced by the vaccination were analyzed using hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). After administration of the 2009 A/H1N1 influenza vaccine, specific and protective antibody response with a major subtype of IgG was sufficiently developed as early as Day 10 (seroprotection rate: 93%). This specific antibody response could maintain for at least 60 days without significant reduction. Antibody response induced by the 2009 A/H1N1 influenza vaccine could not render protection against seasonal H1N1 influenza (seroconversion rate: 3% on Day 21). However, volunteers with higher pre-existing seasonal influenza antibody levels (pre-vaccination HI titer ≥1∶40, Group 1) more easily developed a strong antibody protection effect against the 2009 A/H1N1 influenza vaccine as compared with those showing lower pre-existing seasonal influenza antibody levels (pre-vaccination HI titer <1∶40, Group 2). The titer of the specific antibody against the 2009 A/H1N1 influenza was much higher in Group 1 (geometric mean titer: 146 on Day 21) than that in Group 2 (geometric mean titer: 70 on Day 21). CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Recipients could gain sufficient protection as early as 10 days after vaccine administration. The protection could last at least 60 days. Individuals with a stronger pre-existing seasonal influenza antibody response may have a relatively higher potential for developing a stronger humoral immune response after vaccination with the 2009 A/H1N1 pandemic influenza vaccine

    Estimating Energy Consumption of Transport Modes in China Using DEA

    The rapid growth of transport requirements in China will incur increasing transport energy demands and associated environmental pressures. In this paper, we employ a generalized data envelopment analysis (DEA) to evaluate the relative energy efficiency of rail, road, aviation and water transport from 1971 to 2011 by considering the energy input and passenger-kilometers (PKM) and freight ton-kilometers (TKM) outputs. The results show that the optimal energy efficiencies observed in 2011 are for rail and water transport, with the opposite observed for the energy efficiencies of aviation and road transport. In addition, we extend the DEA model to estimate future transport energy consumption in China. If each transport mode in 2020 is optimized throughout the observed period, the national transport energy consumption in 2020 will reach 497,701 kilotons coal equivalent (ktce), whereas the annual growth rate from 2011 to 2020 will be 5.7%. Assuming that efficiency improvements occur in this period, the estimated national transport energy consumption in 2020 will be 443,126 ktce, whereas the annual growth rate from 2011 to 2020 will be 4.4%, which is still higher than that of the national total energy consumption (3.8%)

    Design and research of soft-body cavity-type detonation drivers

    Summary: According to the high-energy-density movement characteristics of animals during jumping, soft-body cavity-type detonation driver that combines the explosive chemical reaction mechanism of hydrogen and oxygen is designed, in order to control the robot in jump to achieve output optimization. Then, combined with the theoretical values of the detonation dynamic equation and experimental data for the performance parameters, the influences of the mixing ratio of hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2), the volume of mixed hydrogen and oxygen in the cavity, and the shape, wall thickness, and area ratio value of the soft-body cavity on the output performance of the detonation driver are analyzed. When gas volume is 20:10 mL, the jump height reaches 2.5 m. In addition, the upper and lower area ratio of cavity is optimized to 2:1, improving the output performance by 21.6% on average. Therefore, the above research results provide reference for the driver structure design of jumping robot

    Preliminary Study on the Inhibitory Effect and Mechanism of <i>Eichhornia crassipes</i> on Co-Cultured <i>Raphidiopsis raciborskii</i>

    Raphidiopsis raciborskii, which harms water supply and ecological security, may expand its range with climate warming. To explore the ecological management method of R. raciborskii blooms, the co-culture system of Eichhornia crassipes and R. raciborskii was established to study the inhibitory effect and inhibition mechanism of E. crassipes on R. raciborskii compared with the shaded culture of R. raciborskii alone. It was found that after co-cultured with E. crassipes (fresh weight, 5.10 ± 0.60 g·L−1) for seven days under initial high nutrient concentration, the algal cell density of co-culture groups with an initial cell density of 1.57 × 108 cells·L−1 and 1.57 × 109 cells·L−1 decreased by 63.19% and 14.87%, respectively. Meanwhile, the algal cell density in the co-culture group was significantly lower than that in the control group (p R. raciborskii was inhibited by co-cultured E. crassipes. In addition, E. crassipes could significantly reduce the nitrogen and phosphorus content in the water, but the growth state and photosynthesis of E. crassipes were not inhibited by R. raciborskii. These results suggested that E. crassipes has the potential to control R. raciborskii blooms. The study also found that when co-cultured, there was no significant difference in algal cell density between the groups supplemented with a certain amount of nutrients and the group without additional nutrients. Meanwhile, the inhibition rates of the co-culture groups were over 99% on day 4. These results showed that nutrient factors had no significant effect on the inhibitory effect of E. crassipes in the range of nutrients regulated by the experiment, and other factors played a leading role. In other words, under experimental conditions, nutrient competition was not the primary inhibitory mechanism of E. crassipes. This study also confirmed that E. crassipes had inhibitory allelopathy on R. raciborskii. The contribution and significance of allelopathy and other mechanisms could be studied in the future
